How do you set New Year’s resolutions, or your goals, targets and aims?
Mine often come to me as something obvious and self explanatory when I think about what’s important to me and what I want to make out of my life. But since having blood cancer, there’s a twist I always add to them – I phrase them in such a way that they’re something I can achieve on my own, by my application of effort, rather than something dependent on anyone else.
After my chemo was over and I’d had my last session of radiotherapy, over 9 years ago, I decided to lobby for better cancer support in Northwich, because at that time there was actually no services at all here for cancer patients and survivors, to help them get through treatment and recover afterwards. We all had to travel a fair way for help, and that was really hard when I was too ill to drive. But I realised that all I could do was ask!
So rather than setting a new service as a goal, I decided to write to every decision-maker I could find out about who was responsible for whether there were cancer services in Northwich, so people at charities, at the council, in the NHS and central government MPs and ministers. In the end I sent my letter to 103 people, which was quite exhausting enough for someone weakened by cancer and its treatment. I told each person I wrote to that I considered them responsible for no help being available in Northwich for people like me and asked them to provide help. I went to public meetings of the publicly-funded body responsible for commissioning physical activity projects, including their annual Macmillan fundraising coffee morning at their offices (getting there and back on 4 buses and 4 agonising walks as I’d not recovered from my five broken vertebrae). And I helped run a session at one of their conferences at a hotel in Crewe. And I went to the annual open meeting of the local NHS commissioning body and asked difficult questions, two years on the run. I wrote my “patient story” of having to find privately funded treatment and rehabilitation, for their Chair to read out at one of their board meetings. It was publicly broadcast and I shared it with anyone I could on social media. After that for a time chemotherapy was provided in Northwich!
That had been my hope but not my goal, as I knew I needed to set goals I could realistically achieve to keep my spirits up as I tried to recover my health and mobility.
For 2026 one of my goals or resolutions is to apply to more open call exhibitions (ones anyone can try for, if you’re prepared to pay the entry fee) and today I’ve started to achieve it by entering some of my work for the Society of Graphic Fine Art’s 105th Annual Open Exhibition in London.
Obviously I’d love my work to get in! But I’ve no idea if my work’s up to the necessary standard, how many spaces there are for the art of non-members of the SGFA, how many non-member entries there will be or whether the individuals assessing the entries will like my art.
Producing and entering my art was the only bit I can do that doesn’t depend on anyone else.
If I didn't try to get work in this kind of art show, I'd never know if I could actually get my art in. So I’ve started today to meet one of my goals for 2026, entering this exhibition. and that feels good!
