How did things get to this point?
It all started with the alarms blazing loud during the night as the city got attacked by a new threat. The Avengers all quickly dressed and boarded the Quinjet, Tony already flying into the sky in his suit and halfway to their destination. He wanted to waste no time. The quicker they dealt with it the safer people were.
Once he arrived all hell broke loose, the enemy launching in to try and take him down. Tony sped away from them and attacked back, reporting to the rest of his team on what occurred and how many he saw coming his way. It went like this until the rest of the Avengers arrived. Thor delivered a slam with his hammer and Steve threw his shield to bounce off some grunts. Soon after the rest followed along and tried to lead the fight away from civilians.
A large person in particular floated in the sky as they watched their minions fight away the heroes below, expression unclear of how they felt. They didn’t wait much longer to float away and head towards the middle of the city. Tony caught quick glance of the movement, blasted the grunts off of him and chased after the being.
He should have know that they were going to be a challenge. As soon as he grew close they stopped, turned around and pulled out their sword to fight. They had no desire to talk. Tony took the hint and proceeded to shoot, asking Friday to find a weakness on them. They fought while she analyzed, trying down routes that the other quickly blocked. The reaction caught Tony by surprise.
In his mic Steve kept repeating how Tony should retreat and wait for the rest to come together. Being who he was, he didn’t listen. There was no time to waste on someone so dangerous. People’s lives were at stake and who knew what the being was up to especially in the heart of the city.
The sounds of metal colliding and beams shooting echoed through the streets as Tony purposely baited the enemy towards the lake, figuring the lack of buildings would be better.
It worked, the two hovering over the water. Now all that was left was to defeat the other and hopefully catch a break somewhere along the line. His lungs kept hurting from how hard he had to fight.
The Avengers down below were almost finishing up rounding the grunts, SHIELD agents helping to cell them. They watched the light show not too far from here they stood, Tony and the leader fighting one another as if the world depended on it. It could be seen that the leader grew tired of the interference and did something with their sword that caused it to glow white. Without a warning they charged forward and swung at Tony, Tony quickly dodging away and trying to put some distance. Except he couldn’t move and cold sensation spread throughout his back.
What happened?
The person in front of him disappeared and Tony’s eyes grew wide as he realized the other had tricked him. An after image. Fuck. He needed to move before-
And it was too late. A burning, unbearable pain struck him from behind and the air in his lugs escaped. The sound of scraped metal and meat rung in his ears as he looked down and noticed the top of the sword poked out his stomach. He tried to speak but only bloody gurgles came through, his shaky hands grasping at nothing.
“You humans always get too full of yourselves.” The being said as they shoved the sword deeper then made a repulsed expression. Without a care they removed the sword and allowed Tony’s body to fall.
Splash!
And it did. The alarms in his suit went off as Friday announced his critical state and communicated with the rest of the team. She almost sounded worried to him.
He fell deeper and deeper into the cold water, a bloody trail following after as he simply stared above. So this was his end? He figured it would be more heroic than being tricked by something he should have seen coming. Maybe they were right. Humans were too full of themselves.
As he grew closer to the bottom he thought about everything he could have done better, words he should have said and maybe even what he shouldn’t have. He thought about his friends and his loved ones. About Jarvis and his mom. His mom... will he get to see her again? He’s not a religious man but for once he hoped, even for a second, he could see her image again.
The oxygen in his suit tanked to nothing and parts of his suit were quickly engulfed with water. Tony felt lightheaded but tried his best to hold on, get one last look at how nice the water life seemed. Even when his vision became blurry.
He gasped, trying to suck for air only to be greeted by nothing. Then closed his eyes and allowed the comforting darkness to consume him. He liked it. It felt safe.
