DFP Actors August: Simon Prast

NZ actors tend to end up in a lot of the same shows over the years it seems. I have a lot of fun spotting familiar faces, so I thought this would be a fun and silly little project, seeing which actors have repeatedly been in things that Deano was also in (not necessarily alongside). Just a bit of trivia. Enjoy!

Shortland Street (1996/1995-1996)

Dean played Nurse Harry Martin in 1996. Simon played Nurse Paul Churchill in 1995-1996.

Once again I don't have any stills of the other person on Shortland Street. Ugh, sorry. If anyone has any I'll update this!

Xena: Warrior Princess (1996,2000/1995)

Dean played two roles: Homer/Orion - S1E13 “Athens City Academy of the Performing Bards” Wiglaf - S6E9 “Return of the Valkyrie”

Simon played Nemos - S1E4 "Cradle of Hope"

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995-1998/1995-1996)

Dean played a few different characters on this show: Iloran - S1E12 “The Gauntlet” Young Iolaus - S4E3 “Regrets… I’ve Had a Few”, S4E11 “Medea Culpa” and S4E20 “Twilight”. Ruun - S4E7 “Prodigal Sister”

Simon played two roles: First Soldier - S2E3 "What's in a Name?" Patronius - S2E21 "The Wedding of Alcmene"

When Love Comes (1998)

Dean played Mark, a young man who is mixed up with some people who don't take very good care of him, doing what he needs to get by. He also writes poetry/lyrics. Simon played Stephen, Mark's (slightly older) lover. Their relationship is complicated but ultimately seems to be on a healthier track by the end of the movie.

Ahh, I felt weirdly nostalgic pulling stills for this one. I think I need to rewatch it soon. They're both so young!

Serial Killers (2004)

Dean played Andrew, the actor for "Dr. Gilligan" on the in-universe soap opera ‘Heart of Hearts’ in all 7 episodes. Simon played Patrick, the actor for "Dr. Harrington" on the in-universe soap opera 'Heart of Hearts' in all 7 episodes.

These two are both hilarious on this show.

Go Girls (2009/2010-2011)

Dean plays Marco in 2 episodes, S1E2 & S1E11. Simon played Jeffrey Duff in 10 episodes, S2E3-S3E4.

Hillary (2016)

Dean played George Lowe (in all 6 episodes). Simon played "Society Chairman" in episode 2 "Louise".

The Brokenwood Mysteries (2018/2022)

Dean played Barnaby Buchanan in S5E4 "The Dark Angel". Simon played Gordon Godley in S8E1 "From the Cradle to the Grave" (the same episode Joel Tobeck is in!).

Both of their episodes were written by Tim Balme!

Under the Vines (2022)

Dean played Griffin in 5 out of the 6 episodes in S1. Simon played Rupert Shaw in episode 6.

If I am remembering correctly, Rupert comes to the vineyard after giving it a glowing review because of some arm twisting from Griffin...?

I have a lot of fun spotting familiar faces, so I thought this would be a fun and silly little project, seeing which actors have repeatedly been in things that Deano was also in (not necessarily alongside). Just a bit of trivia. Enjoy!

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995-1998/1996-1999)

Dean played a few different characters on this show: Iloran - S1E12 "The Gauntlet" Young Iolaus - S4E3 "Regrets... I've Had a Few", S4E11 "Medea Culpa" and S4E20 "Twilight". Ruun - S4E7 "Prodigal Sister"

Interestingly, Dean played that 'Ruun' character (not pictured) randomly between other season 4 episodes where he appears as Young Iolaus, and he really doesn't look very different from when he's playing Iolaus, so I feel like even casual watchers would have easily recognized him. At least his season 1 character, Iloran, looks very different with his neck beard and shorter hair. Ruun just looks like Iolaus got some scars.

Joel played a few characters as well: King Boreas - S2E18 "Promises" Strife - 6 episodes between S3E13 and S4E15 David Scott Pollison, office production assistant - S4E15 "Yes, Virginia, There is a Hercules" Deimos - S5E20 "Fade Out" and S6E2 "Love, Amazon Style"

Joel also played two roles: Deimos - S5E22 "Motherhood" Lucifer - S6E13 "You Are There"

It may be worth noting that Deimos is a character that also appeared on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and yet his name is spelled incorrectly in the credits for his appearance on Xena, so he's credited as "Demios" instead of "Deimos" which meant that I spent a stupid amount of time trying to figure out if it actually was the same character or not because I don't have that season of HTLJ and had to go digging on fan wikis. Bless the fans.

Shortland Street (1996/1996, 2015-2016)

Dean played Nurse Harry Martin in 1996 (per IMDB). Joel played Craig Develter in 1996, and then Jimmy Isaac in 2015-2016.

The Chosen (1998)

I can't find a copy of this anywhere. I did find a trailer for it but I didn't recognize anyone in the clips they used.

Dean plays Andrew Scott. Joel plays Trevor O'Connor.

Young Hercules (1998-1999)

Dean plays Iolaus, the sidekick/bff to Hercules, throughout the series. He is credited for 46 of the 50 episodes (I haven't finished it yet at the time of prepping this post - what's with the other 4 episodes?? Unacceptable lmao.)

Joel plays Strife (aka 'Nysus Gaius') - a henchman to the antagonist Ares - and is credited in 12 episodes (I think some is flashbacks).

I love both of their characters so much, omg. Joel totally stole my heart being a goofball in this role, and Dean is a dreamboat as well as hilarious. I have such a soft spot for weird/funny sidekick characters, ugh.

Westside (2016-2017/2015-2016)

Dean plays Evan Lace in 9 episodes, S2E2-S3E3. Joel plays Des McEwen in 8 episodes, S1E4-S2E10.

Hillary (2016)

Dean plays George Lowe (in all 6 episodes). And he's lovely. Joel plays Bunny Fuchs in (episodes 4 and 5). He's not as lovely but Joel looks great.

The Brokenwood Mysteries (2018/2022)

Dean is in S5E4 "The Dark Angel" as Barnaby Buchanan. Joel is in S8E1 "From the Cradle to the Grave" as Bobby.

Joel's episode only just came out in July! I had this post all queued up without this included, and then happened to see him in a BTS shot Fern Sutherland shared on her IG story and was like "IS THAT JOEL!?!?" and had to edit this post to include his Brokenwood appearance. ♥

One Lane Bridge (2020/2020-2021)

Dean plays Andrew "Grub" Ryder, and is credited for the first 6 episodes, S1E1-S1E6. Joel plays Stephen Tremaine, and is credited for the first 11 episodes, S1E1-S2E5. This show looks real sad.

Auckward Love (2016)

They did not appear in the same episode, both having minor roles. Dean played Dan in S1E1 and S1E5. Simon played Sam in S2E1. His scene is pretty funny (as is the show).

Hillary (2016)

Dean plays George Lowe in episodes S1E1-S1E6. Simon plays Young Ed 16 yrs in S1E1.

Ed Hillary is the main character, and Simon plays the teenage version of him. George (Dean) is friends with adult-Ed, and he's really likeable. This is really not the sort of show I would have watched except for the actors in it, haha. Ed Hillary was one of the first people to climb Mt Everest and it follows his life (how accurately I have no way of knowing). ♥

Westside (2016-2017/2019)

Dean plays Evan Lace in 9 episodes between S2E2-S3E3. Simon plays Gary in 2 episodes, S5E7 & S5E8.

Golden Boy (2019-2020)

Dean plays Aussie Dave in all 16 episodes. Simon plays Billy in all 16 episodes.

Under the Vines (2021-2022)

Dean plays Griffin, an actor poised to break into the US film industry. He's best friends with the main character, Daisy, who is joint heir to a vineyard. (He appears in 5 of the 6 episodes in S1.) Simon plays Gus, the sweetest himbo working at Oakley! (He appears in every episode of S1.)

This is the first thing I saw Simon Mead in! Their characters have a complicated relationship and I'm very curious to see where it all goes in season 2 (unreleased at time of me prepping this, but I think due 2022?).

Dean plays Liam in S1E10 “The Other Woman”. Rachel plays Frances Seger in all 13 episodes.

The Almighty Johnsons (2011-2013)

Dean plays Anders Johnson, one of the titular Johnsons, the god Bragi. (36/36 episodes) Rachel plays Ingrid, the goddess Snotra. (32/36 episodes)

I love Ingrid! I wish I was friends with her irl, she's so fun and kind. And you should know how I feel about Anders by now. ♥😈♥

Auckward Love (2015/2017)

Dean plays Dan very briefly in S1E1 "So, This Is Us" and S1E5 "Hunger Games". Rachel plays Marnie in 3 episodes, S3E3-S3E5.

The Almighty Johnsons (2011-2013)

Dean plays Anders Johnson (Bragi) throughout. Jared plays Anders’s younger brother Tyrone Johnson (Hod) throughout.

Dean plays George Lowe in all 6 episodes. George is so lovely! Unfortunately these two seem to have a falling out. Jared plays Earl Riddiford in 3 episodes, S1E2, S1E4, S1E5.

Dean plays Barnaby Buchanan in S5E4 “The Dark Angel”. Barnaby is a tragic character suffering from serious PTSD exacerbated by his time at an asylum. I love himb. ♥

Jared plays Rory Parkes in S1E4 “Hunting the Stag”.

One Lane Bridge (2020/2020-2021)

Dean plays Andrew ‘Grub’ Ryder in 6 episodes, S1E1-S1E6. Jared plays Rob Ryder in 10 episodes, S1E1-S2E4.

Kvasir was such an interesting and weird character, and could have been used for various plots I think, but he also sort of became an easy out for the characters, so I think that's why they didn't bring him back in season 3.

Michael also directed 2 episodes ("Typical Auckland God" and "The Asparagus Is Kicking In").
