It’s been about a whole year since I wrote one of these! Crazy how that worked out. As you may or may not know, I decided to dedicate this year to cutting back on adding new games to my collection (with a few exceptions) and finishing up some stuff on my backlog. The results were... mixed, but in terms of raw numbers I made up for about two years of buying games and not playing them, so I can’t say I’m too disappointed. However, even though I played a lot more individual titles this year, I ended up with a slightly smaller list of ones I would call “cool”. And a lot of them are from this year, weirdly enough! Didn’t dig up very many hidden gems in that backlog. I think it all worked out in the end though, because the quality of my favorites are so high this time around. Really a great year for games. Anyway, here's a bunch of cool games I experienced for the first time in 2015.
Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master (Genesis, 1993)
I’ve never been much of a Shinobi fan. I rented the PS2 game a couple of times as a kid and tried to get into The Revenge Of Shinobi when I was way into emulating games, but none of it ever stuck with me. I’d pretty much written off the entire series as something I’d never enjoy until one day, on a whim, I tried out Shinobi III.
Turns out Shinobi III is pretty fucking cool. Looking back on it, my main complaint with Revenge of Shinobi is that the controls are very plodding and stiff. As if you were playing as some sort of weird robot man instead of a ninja. While it might not have entirely shaken off all of that stiffness, Shinobi III handles much better. Your movements and attacks are much more fluid, and small touches like the little hop on your dash attack having projectile invincibility so you can sail past shurikens and slice fools really brings it all a step above. Top it off with solid level design, some real cool setpiece moments and good bosses and you end up with a super fun game I wish I had played a lot sooner.
F-Zero X Expansion Kit (Nintendo 64DD, 2000)
So hey! One of those exceptions I mentioned at the top of this! I bought a 64DD! Look I was in a position where I had a lot of extra money and I saw a deal so I went for it DON’T JUDGE ME. I had reasons. Maybe not great reasons, but reasons. One those reasons being that F-Zero X is my favorite F-Zero. I mean don’t get me wrong, F-Zero GX is great and all, but I’ve always preferred X’s track design and general aesthetic. So NATURALLY I would spend hundreds of dollars on a rare doomed-from-the-start Nintendo 64 system add-on and a Japanese copy of F-Zero X so I can experience the expansion pack, right? No? Well, I did it anyway. And I don’t regret it! F-Zero X Expansion Kit completes F-Zero X. The fact that it’s locked behind such obscure and expensive requirements is a crime. It adds half of the base game worth of new tracks, all of them really cool and difficult (you can tell they were made specially for F-Zero X diehards), an extremely robust track maker that you can use to make anything you’ve seen in the main game and more (provided you have enough patience to learn it) and a vehicle editor. Ok, the vehicle editor isn’t that exciting. It’s pretty barebones, especially compared to what came later in F-Zero GX. But it’s still fun to dink around in, give Mr. EAD and Blood Falcon the cool cars they deserve. Expansion Kit also throws in a handful of new songs (including a Mario Kart 64 Rainbow Road remix that now plays in the base game’s Rainbow Road course) and some superpowered versions of Captain Falcon, Samurai Goroh and Jody Summer. Just a fantastic package all around. Most people should probably just emulate it when 64DD emulation gets all the kinks ironed out though. Probably. actually nah buy a 64dd they’re really cool
Bloodborne (PlayStation 4, 2015)
Bloodborne. Bloodborne’s kind of a weird one for me. It’s a really good game. I like it a whole lot and it’s the Souls game I enjoy actually playing the most thanks to the fast-paced, rushdown oriented combat. Demon’s Souls will always be my favorite overall, but Bloodborne’s probably number two. It actually feels like a really nice blend between Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls in a lot of ways. The thing is, I’m just not really... excited by it? I dunno. Bloodborne is super good and I had a ton of fun playing it. I’d easily recommend it to people who were looking to play a good ass video game. Because it is a good ass video game. I just sort of scientifically recognize this and that’s it. It doesn’t light a fire in me. Maybe I’m just burnt out on Souls games, even though I completely skipped Dark Souls 2. Whatever the reason, I’m not passionate about Bloodborne. But I still recognize that it’s a great game. One of my favorites this year, even! I’m just not crazy over it. I’ll still go back someday and platinum it/play the DLC, though.
Splatoon (Wii U, 2015)
When Splatoon got revealed at E3 2014, I was cautiously optimistic. It looked kinda fun, but maybe a little one note. Not to mention that Nintendo didn’t have the best track record for online, well, anything. So i just sort of forgot about it until mid-2015, when they announced a series of free time-limited online tests for the game. I decided to give it a try and was completely surprised at how immediately and overwhelmingly fun the game was, even locked to four weapons in the demo. The player movement, unique weapon types and focus on shooting the level over shooting other players was refreshing and fun, and I knew I needed the full game. I didn’t get it immediately, but eventually received it as a birthday gift and boy am I glad. The game started off pretty barebones with only a handful of weapons, maps and gear, but I managed to get in right when Nintendo started supporting the hell out of it by adding tons of the previous stuff along with game modes, music, entire weapon types, balance changes and bi-weekly Splatfests. The amount of content they’ve added to Splatoon is crazy, and as of this writing there’s still more on the way. It also comes with a short single-player campaign that’s no slouch, combining brief levels meant to subtly teach you movement techniques you can carry into multiplayer with fun boss encounters. I finally got burnt out near the end of the year, but Splatoon had me hooked and regularly playing for at least half of it, and a competitive online shooter hasn’t done that for me since Modern Warfare 2. A really great game that I wasn’t expecting.
Undertale (PC, 2015)
Speaking of unexpected, holy SHIT. Undertale. Undertale! Remember last year when I said I do these lists like this because I generally don’t like ranking stuff? Well THROW IT ALL OUT THE WINDOW UNDERTALE IS OBJECTIVELY GAME OF THE YEAR 2015 no I am kidding. Not kidding about Undertale being my favorite game this year, the other thing. Undertale is my favorite game this year. And that’s unexpected. In a year where so many huge, highly anticipated and great games got released, the six-hour indie RPG I had never heard of until a month after its release somehow stole the show. How? Simple. No other game made me laugh and smile like Undertale did in a very, very long time. It was so thoroughly charming and funny in a way a lot of games aren’t, but a lot of my favorites are. The world is fun, fleshed out and full of fantastic characters. The battle system is a really fun combination of standard turn-based RPG combat and shoot ‘em up bullet dodging (of which both I am a big fan) with unique patterns for every enemy, and the game plays around with it constantly. The game plays around with a lot of things in a lot of ways, actually! It goes for some very subversive, fourth-wall-breaky sorta stuff and while I’ve seen some of its tricks before, Undertale really commits to it all and pulls most of it off effectively. And I haven’t even mentioned the soundtrack, oh my god! It’s phenomenal, one of those ones that I’ll end up humming for the rest of my life. Playing through Undertale gave me that same feeling I get from the very best parts of my very favorite PlatinumGames titles, combined with the feeling of playing something like Mother 3. That feeling of joyous incredulity that I love so much combined something weird, funny and heartwarming. That’s Undertale. A surprising game that’s full of surprises, and my favorite video game of 2015.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PlayStation 4, 2015)
My feelings on Metal Gear Solid V are complicated. On one hand, it’s a triumph in the field of stealth games. The core gameplay is so fun and so detailed that I put 157 hours into 100%ing it (about half of that was just beating it for the first time). The amount of situations you can get into and the ways you can approach and deal with them are staggering. MGSV absolutely raises the bar on this type of game and is undoubtedly the most fun to play Metal Gear game. On the other hand, just about everything on the periphery is disappointing in some way. The game screams out that it isn’t quite finished all over the place with the poorly executed, abruptly concluded and ultimately unresolved story being the biggest example. But there’s also a lot of smaller stuff, such as the comparative lack of equipment/side mission variety from Peace Walker and the awful free-to-play game like resource management and development timers (that Konami has only been pushing harder and harder in the days since the game’s release). The gameplay is there and firing on all cylinders, but the content is missing. That sentence sounds fairly negative, but the gameplay alone really is strong enough to carry the rest of the package. At least it was for me. But I’ll probably never play it again on account of it being too much of a time investment just for mechanics I’ve thoroughly wrung dry and nothing else. Don’t get me wrong, Metal Gear Solid V is an extremely good game. But it could have been one of the greatest of all time.
Mario Artist: Talent Studio (Nintendo 64DD, 2000)
Remember where you were when you read this, because it’s the only time you’re going to see two 64DD titles on a game of the year list. The Mario Artist series is a three disk (actually four, if you count the now near useless Communication Kit meant for uploading creations to the Internet) creativity suite from Nintendo. If there’s one thing I love, it’s creativity suites from Nintendo. Mario Paint, Game Boy Camera and WarioWare D.I.Y. are three of my favorite pieces of software ever created, and Mario Artist: Talent Studio is right up there with them. You might be wondering why this one over the other two disks I mentioned before, and, well. It’s not really this one over the others. Talent Studio needs the others. It’s the ultimate culmination of the Mario Artist series. You see, the other two entries are Paint Studio and Polygon Studio. They let you do exactly what they sound like they let you do, that is draw pictures and make 3D models. And they’re really cool on their own! But what do you do with your creations? That’s where Talent Studio comes in. Import your art as backgrounds, import your models as props, and use Talent Studio to create actors all for your very own Nintendo 64 movie. Everything about this package is insane. First off, physically, it comes with a cartridge you stick into your N64 that has composite A/V inputs and a 3.5 inch microphone jack. You can feed video into the game, capture a still image to use as an actor’s face, and give them voice clips with the microphone. Seeing video getting fed into an N64 game is a supremely odd experience. On the presentation side, it’s the apex of the series’ ascent to lunacy. Paint Studio started things at a sub-Mario Paint level of weird, then Polygon Studio took a sudden jump towards a more harsh version of Nintendo’s brand of eclectic weirdness in the late ‘90s. Talent Studio is even further beyond. The first time you see an actor with an imported face come to life and emote is an unforgettable, somewhat scarring experience. Finally, it’s so much more crazy in-depth than the other two games that I didn’t even know where to START at first. Making actors is fairly straight-forward, especially if you’ve used any of the other games, but the movie maker is so nuts it’s intimidating at first. Thankfully it’s not only deceptively easy get a handle on, it’s super powerful. Individual movie files are limited to three models/actors and four backgrounds, but within those constraints you make pretty much anything you can think of. Talent Studio is incredible and exactly up my alley, like it was made just for me. If this had made it out of Japan at the time of its release I would have lost an immeasurable amount of my time to it. Nowadays I don’t have as much to spare, but I still want to dive in and make a lot more than a GameLife horror movie. Better late than never, I suppose.
Yakuza 5 (PlayStation 3, 2015)
There was a version of this list that almost got posted which had Yakuza 4 in the section below this with a blurb that essentially read “It’s another Yakuza game and those are fun”. Before I hit publish though, I decided to hang back and see if the then-upcoming release of Yakuza 5 would end up replacing it. After a year of playing through this series, the most I expected to do was replace the “4″ with a “5″ and call it a day. Despite the fact that I had fun nearly every step of the way, I could recolonize that each game had only improved and changed slightly over the last. What I’m trying to say here is that I never expected to love Yakuza 5 as much as I do. Sega looked at nearly every aspect of the older games, asked themselves how they could improve it, and then fuckin’ NAILED it. The plot, while weirdly paced on account of having to set up five different characters, is the most coherent and entertaining the series has had since Yakuza 2. The game itself is smoother on every level, from movement to combat to transitions between exploring and fighting. It’s not perfect and still a tiny bit clunky in places (I’m convinced they’ll never make picking up weapons a completely smooth process), but it’s the absolute best it’s ever been. All your moves flow together real nice which makes fights feel a lot less stilted. The side content is plentiful, surfaced early and a lot more clearly (all they had to do was put icons on the map, who knew!) and each character has an entire gameplay mode with a side plot for it exclusive to them. They also reworked a ton of smaller things like camera angles and UI stuff that, while not incredibly important when taken on their own, lend a lot to the game feeling much more fresh after four games of that all being the same. In short, it feels like the jump I was expecting from Yakuza 2 to Yakuza 3. I enjoyed the previous games, but I honestly didn’t consider myself a huge Yakuza fan until 5. This is the game that finally delivers on the Yakuza promise. They got it there. It finally happened.
These games were also cool, I just had less words to say about them:
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (Nintendo 3DS, 2015): Ultimate is the only way to describe it. It’s an even better Monster Hunter with even more content. So much fun. I had to force myself to stop playing and finish all these other games. Even now I’m fighting off the urge to do nothing but play this.
Tokyo Crash Mobs (Nintendo 3DS, 2013): The game is Puzz Loop or Zuma, whichever name you want to call it by. Everything else, though, you’re not gonna find anywhere else. It feels like a weird import-only PS1 game that got caught in a time warp and was released in the 21st century somehow. I mean that in the absolute best way possible. delusion now
Spelunker (NES, 1987): Spelunker is a “series” I got into with Spelunker HD, and I never really did more than dabble with the NES original until this year. Spelunker gets a bad rap. It’s not a bad game at all! It’s tough, esoteric and has stiff controls but it’s fair. It’s, and I already hate myself for saying this, a lot like a Souls game that way.
Super Mario Maker (Wii U, 2015): A game that does what it says on the box, and what it does is incredible. Making, sharing and playing Mario levels all made super easy and super fun. This was originally going to go up with the longer descriptions but there just isn’t really any more to say so it would have been pointless gushing. You can easily make and play infinite Super Mario levels. Get it.
Virtua Racing Deluxe (32X, 1994): There’s not much to this game, but I’m a sucker for both early polygonal games and a fun challenge. Virtua Racing Deluxe is those things. Being a 32X game instead of a Genesis game with an extra processing chip helps it maintain a playable framerate too, which goes a long way towards letting me like the game outside of its time and place.
Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman (PlayStation, 1999): Though I’m pretty sure it doesn’t share any developer lineage, Rising Zan feels a lot like the precursor to the modern Devil May Cry style action game. It’s got like all the mechanics you’d expect from one, and it’s definitely got a real goofy sense of style. The camera is awful and the controls are clunky, like so many 1999 PlayStation games were, but there’s absolutely more to this game than the incredible opening song.
Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair (PlayStation 4, 2015): It’s EDF 2025 but now there’s like triple the enemies on screen and more weapons and more missions and giant Robot Alchemic Drive robots fighting Godzillas and aaaaaAAAAAAAA they took the game that owned and made it own even more
Man, I wrote a lot more words than last time. Anyway, hey, it’s the bottom of the article! Welcome! If this is your first time here, this is where I don’t know how to end this thing. If not then hey, you already knew what to expect! Either way, thank you for reading my words about cool video games. It was a year full of surprises. I hope that maybe you’ll find some of your own with this list.

I think "THE TOP GAMEZ OF 20XX" lists are boring and kinda pointless. They're too arbitrary and the time limit is restricting. Then again, I don't really like ranking things in general. I do like the general idea of taking a look back at the year, however. Here's a bunch of cool games I experienced for the first time in 2014.
Carnage Heart (PlayStation, 1997)
I fuckin' love customization in video games (actually, I just like making things in general) so Carnage Heart was extremely my shit. It's a turn-based strategy game that's entirely about customization.
You build giant robots called Over Kill Engines (great name) in a sorta more limited Armored Core style, but the twist is that they're entirely AI driven. It's up to you to actually program the robots using an icon-based flowchart system, and once you get the hang of it it's pretty intuitive. It's not lacking in depth either, the game comes with a whole other disc dedicated entirely to tutorial videos and a mini programming strategy guide in the manual. Once you have your OKEs built, programmed and manufactured you send them out in squads of three to fight enemies and capture bases. It's all way cool, especially for '97. There's been a few sequels, but only one ever made it out of Japan. Carnage Heart EXA came out for the PSP in 2013 and I'm really looking forward to finally getting around to it next year.
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call (Nintendo 3DS, 2014)
This one really took me by surprise. I played and enjoyed the first Theatrhythm, but it was a pretty thin and unpolished package. Curtain Call fixes almost every complaint I had with the first game, most notably tripling the song list and replacing the confusing and repetitive Chaos Shrine with Quest Medleys, a much more straightforward and varied take on the same general concept of playing a randomly generated sequence of songs. There's tons of other improvements that would take way too much time to list here, but all you need to know is the game is polished to a mirror sheen. If you like Final Fantasy music or rhythm games it's a no-brainer. I never expected to like Curtain Call as much as I do, but here I am still playing it and buying DLC (they just released a bunch of Bravely Default songs!).
Panic! (Sega CD, 1993)
Panic! is barely a video game. These days people like to throw that phrase around when trying to dismiss games they don't like, but I really mean that literally here. The sole means of interaction the player has is looking at a variety of different buttons and choosing one to press. The buttons are often laid out completely nonsensically and have no apparent correlation to anything. The button you press might take you to a different room with more buttons to press, or it may cause a famous monument to explode (it's a game over if this happens too many times) but more often than not it just results in total fucking nonsense unfolding. And all you can do is watch. A lot of games trade on how cuh-RAZY they are but Panic! is really and truly the definition of the word. The button you press could cause anything to happen, from setting off a Scooby-Doo-esque multiple door chase scene with The Terminator and Frankenstein's monster to having your character suddenly sprout multiple pairs of nude female breasts (in 1993!). You're always A-OK afterwards though, and the button pressing continues. Panic! is also frighteningly expansive. I didn't respect it going in, but I sure as hell did 100+ pages of hastily scrawled notes and diagrams later. By the end I didn't care that I was essentially triggering cutscenes from a menu. The style (99% of the sound effects are just some dude making noises with his mouth) and absurdity of it all totally won me over. I loved every damn second of that video game.
Shin Megami Tensei Persona 4 (PlayStation 2, 2008)
Yeah I know, I'm late to the party. Last year I played Persona 3 for the first time and really loved it. This year it was 4's turn and hey, I ended up loving it almost as much! I feel like that would come off as an insult if P3 wasn't as good as it was. While I thought the overall story and gameplay (disclaimer: I'm one of the ones that didn't mind not having direct party control in 3) was a bit weaker in Persona 4, the characters and writing were so strong that it made up for it. The more upbeat tone was a nice change of pace from P3's darker demeanor as well. Really though, even with all this talk of which one's better or worse or whatever, you can't go wrong with either and I'm super excited for Persona 5 next year.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (Nintendo 3DS, 2013)
Oh man A Link Between Worlds. Straight up the best Zelda game since Wind Waker and one of my favorites in the series. Just so fucking smartly designed in every single aspect of it. The way you can go after dungeons in any order you want fits in perfectly, like the series was designed around it all along. The new items are really fun and useful. Even stuff I dismissed as a gimmick before playing like morphing into a painting is just so fucking SMARTLY used. "Smart" is the perfect way to describe the game. The only complaint I have is that it's pretty easy, but then again I think that can apply to most Zelda games. It's also the only Zelda that I felt compelled to do absolutely everything in, and someday I'll do it again in Hero mode. It's so so so so SO good. Really.
Bravely Default (Nintendo 3DS, 2014)
My favorite JRPG character building system is the job system. It's a big reason why Final Fantasy 5 is my favorite Final Fantasy. When Square Enix announced Bravely Default, I was equal parts excited and cautious; excited because there was going to be a new job system game and cautious because Square Enix has been a total fucking trainwreck for forever and they were probably going to ruin it. Not only did they not ruin it, they knocked it out of the park! Bravely Default shows that there's still a splinter cell of people at SE that knows how to make great video games. The gameplay, art style and soundtrack are all fantastic. I even liked the twist that people hate because I wasn't anywhere near tired of the combat (and it all played into the rad final boss sequence nicely). Bravely Default totally sucked me in and Bravely Second is one of my most anticipated games of 2015.
This is another one I wasn't expecting to like as much as I did. I imported it from Europe because it was cheap and weird, but it ended up being super fun too. It's a hard game to describe but here goes: You are Tingle, from the Zelda series. Your goal is to throw rupees (money) into a magical tower so you can reach the mythical world of Rupeeland. Every single thing in the game revolves around rupees. Your health is your rupee count. Interacting with NPCs is this weird wagering system where if you don't give them enough rupees they won't so much as speak to you (but they'll take your rupees anyway) and if you overpay, well, you overpay. Tingle's a wimp and can't explore or fight very well on his own, so he needs to hire bodyguards using the same mechanic. It's very strange and playing optimally requires a lot of trial and error, but that strangeness plus some real fun dungeons and bosses carry it a long way. It's a shame we never got this in America and the sequel never came out of Japan.
Bayonetta 2 (Wii U, 2014)
Depending on what day it is, I might tell you that Bayonetta is my favorite game of all time. It was my action game awakening, the one where I finally figured out how to play them correctly and what makes them good or bad. Needless to say I had some lofty fuckin' expectations for the sequel. It didn't quiiiiite meet all of them (the lame final boss sucked a lot of the wind out of my sails), but Bayonetta 2 still turned out pretty goddamn incredible. Tons of mechanical refinements make the game play much smoother, the new weapons are a lot of fun and everything from Chapter 11 'til right before the final boss is just non-stop amazing. It may be a bit too easy and it may lean a little too hard on moments and elements from the first game, but who gives a shit? It's fun as hell and one of the best of the many reasons everyone should have a Wii U.
These games were also cool, I just had less words to say about them:
Half Minute Hero: The Second Coming (PC, 2014): The first Half Minute Hero is one of my favorite games ever, and this isn't anywhere near as good. Still fun though!
D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die (Xbox One, 2014): There's like a tenth of a game here but I loved what they managed to stick in before Microsoft forced them to ship.
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PlayStation 4, 2014): There's a single damn map in this game and I still managed to play it for like 15 hours. The Phantom Pain is going to be incredible.
Mamorukun Curse! (PlayStation 3, 2013): A fun little mix of Pocky & Rocky and a bullet hell shooter, but for me the standout of this game is the fucking phenomenal soundtrack. Seriously it's the best. Most Sega Genesis ass music to never touch a Genesis.
Rusty's Real Deal Baseball (Nintendo 3DS, 2014): Nintendo did free-to-play right! Really fun and cohesive package of baseball themed minigames with a weird and funny story about a depressed baseball dog.
La-Mulana (PC, 2012): Super fun and tough action-adventure game with great music. Some of the puzzles are a little too obtuse for their own good, though...
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Wii U, 2014): Yo, you like Super Smash Bros.? This is more of it and it's real good. 8-player mode is surprisingly both good and easy to set up!
Shovel Knight (Wii U, 2014): You know, I probably could write a ton about Shovel Knight but I'm tired so you'll have to settle for this: This is a game where the main gimmick is just extremely tight and polished gameplay. The 8-bit audiovisuals are a really good style and they pull it off well, but the hook for this game is it just plays like a dream and is never boring. If you don't like this you probably don't like video games.
Mario Kart 8 (Wii U, 2014): This is objectively the best Mario Kart to date even though I think 7 handled a little better. The DLC is really well done and affordable too.
Earth Defense Force 2025 (Xbox 360, 2014): I love EDF so much and they made everything bigger and explodier and aaaaaaa this game owns
Yakuza 1 & 2 (PlayStation 2, 2006 & 2008): Lumping these together because I played them back to back and they're similar. Fun sorta-open-world beat 'em up with an entertaining story. 2 gets kinda bonkers. You fight through a bunch of samurai in a golden Japanese castle hidden inside a normal looking Japanese castle and in the last room you fist fight two tigers.
Wow you read all the way down here? Weird! Congratulations! Thanks for reading I hope maybe you'll play some of these cool video games.
The top baby names for 2011 were announced this week, and I'm just going to skip over the boring ones (Jacob and Sophia, I'm looking at you) and jump straight to the punchline...
