“Ya touch my boys again, ya fuckin’ dead, ya hear me?” Jack’s voice cracks when he lifts it and stabs an accusing finger at the bleeding thug nearly cowering beneath him. “Dead!”

It’s only when someone shouts behind him that he whips around, glare like a dagger stabbing at the person who dared raise their voice. But it’s different. It’s Race. And Jack unclenches aching fists, still bloodied at the knuckles, white nail marks all the way around his palms.

He knows he goes too far sometimes. He can’t help it. He fucking loves his kids. And when something like this happens - when he comes across a petty thief trying to mug some of his younger boys - sometimes his brain shuts full off while he makes sure they never come near him again.

“Yeah, yeah, I know,” he mumbles, sniffing and wiping some blood away from his own nose as he makes his way toward Race. “Don’t even say it.” But he does throw his arm around Race’s shoulder so they can walk away together, the kids he saved already scurrying far further ahead of them.
