I'm seeing a lot of "Happy St. Patrick's Day" posts so here's my Irish-American two cents.
st patrick was a british colonialist whose mission was to convert irish people from their traditional religion to christianity and he's the reason why the shamrock is associated with ireland
leprechauns are a derogatory stereotype (as are monkeys but that's less common now)
LGBT+ people were banned from participating in st patricks day events in new york and boston until 2014 and 2015 respectively, even after an irish-american lgb group took the issue to supreme court in 1995.
Stop telling me and other redheads that we "don't have a soul". It's rude and offensive, no matter where you believe the myth came from.
By all means enjoy the day, but know the history
How People React To My Irish Heritage
Any other day: Oh, okay. I'm like 20% Scottish, and 35% German and 17%...
On St. Patrick's Day: OMFG you're Irish!?! That's soooo cool! Top o' the morning to ya! But you're not even wearing green?! Actually, did you know that St. Patrick wasn't...
I need you guys to understand how incredible old Irish curses are. You look up “Irish curses” and instead of getting their version of “bitchass motherfucker” you get shit like “May your fields and your wife both be barren.”
Like damn. I’m learning a lot. Like don’t mess with me, I’ll curse your bloodline to end and your livelihood to die :)
Basically the image of Irish culture modern St.Patricks day celebrations present is that we’re all violent assholes who get shit faced all day and night, and this image is widely perpetrated by non-Irish people. Having my culture reduced to drinking and fighting, alcoholism and abuse, is insulting and damaging.
Have i ever mentioned how extra i love being??? Family coat of arms on the back
An American: oh wow you’re Irish? I’m Irish too- Me: NO. NO YOU’RE NOT. YOU’RE AMERICAN. YOU WERE BORN IN AMERICA. YOU LIVE IN AMERICA. YOUR GREAT GREAT WHATEVER GREAT GRANDPARENTS WERE IRISH. MINE WERE FRENCH BUT THAT DOESN’T MAKE ME GOD DAMN FRENCH. YOU ARE NOT IRISH. YOU KNOW SHIT ABOUT MY COUNTRY AND WHAT IT’S LIKE TO GROW UP AND LIVE HERE AND SEE ITS BEAUTY AND IT’S BAD PARTS, YOU KNOW SHIT ABOUT IT. YOU CANNOT JUST CLAIM THIS COUNTRY AS YOURS LIKE A CUTE LITTLE NOVELTY. GOD DAMN.
Hit me with ur car, I’m Irish 🍀
