RUIN THE FRIENDSHIP ➝ DEMMY.

DANI: had gone out to run a couple errands, which included walking Drummer and picking up a couple bottles of Gatorade to try to mask the cold she could feel coming on, so she was already pretty close to Emmy's apartment when the two had been texting. It made sense for her to just go over there, since Dani wasn't the type for cryptic messages; she liked to put everything out in the open, even if things were kind of complicated where Emmy was concerned. For half a second, she'd worried that the other girl wouldn't let her in, but someone just happened to be exiting the building as she approached, so that was helpful, and Dani knew exactly where Emmy kept her spare key from all of the times she'd asked her to check in on Schroeder. That meant she was able to let herself into the apartment without Emmy's help, where she let Drummer free from his leash and he immediately ran off, most likely in search of the cat. Dani, however, followed the sound of the music, leaning against the doorframe with her arms crossed and a slight frown on her face once she'd reached the correct room. "Are you going to explain those text messages to me, Em?"

The summer when I was eight, there was a group of tadpoles who lived in the lake behind our apartment. I thought that there should be a mama frog there looking after her babies but I never saw one (and later found out there didn’t need to be), so I would always convince my grandpa to let me eat my lunch next to the lake so that they wouldn’t feel so lonely. Of course now that I’m older, I know that they didn’t, but back then I felt like their surrogate mama watching them grow up into some sweet froglets and then some absolutely splendid frogs. We moved apartments later that summer and when I went to say goodbye to them, it’s like they knew, and three of them hopped up on to the grass to see me off. Frogs are sort of my lucky animal, so I don’t find anything off-putting about this in the least.

“Demon!” Dani yelled, hammering the side of her fist against Sage’s door. She could’ve definitely just let herself in, but Drummer was busy sniffing around the ground, she wasn’t trying to drag him away from a good time and into Sage’s lair. “It’s Saturday!” She continued, with the dog beginning to bark along with her. Evidently, the louder volume was getting him excited. Sage was going to hate all of the chipper energy, Dani just knew it. But that wasn’t going to stop her. “You’re coming for your weekly blast of fresh air and natural sunlight with me and the pup. The dog park’s a-waitin’.”
