adam continuously bringing the never used wedding champagne to big events and his reason being he didn’t want it to go to waste…
Conrad "Connie" Fisher
"It's funny, you know, my mom used to call me "Connie" whenever I was too in my head."
THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY 3.09, “Last Call”
Belly did not ruin that family. Adam ruined his family a long time ago. He cheated on his wife. He pitted those boys against each other. He made Conrad feel like he was responsible for everyone’s happiness while making Jeremiah feel like he’s never going to be enough. If Adam had not messed up these boys none of this would have happened. Y’all need to stop blaming Belly for everything.
I think this episode highlighted even more just how insecure Jeremiah feels around Conrad. Their conversations this episode were never fully warm with one another, there was always an edge to their dialogue and it seemed like a battle rather than a brotherly chat. But the issue is that it mainly seems to be a one-way battle that Jeremiah has waged against Conrad that Conrad wants no part in (at least until he finds out that Jere cheated).
When Jeremiah tells Conrad, "And you looked after my girl all summer too," he specifically uses the term "my girl" as a way to remind Conrad that he's hers and not his. He knows that there's a vibe between them and he's trying to egg Conrad on to say something back. But the thing is that Conrad isn't fighting back, he's being a supportive brother, telling Jere that he can do better than follow in their dad's footsteps and that he was happy to help out with fixing the house. Jere is surprised because he wants Conrad to act mean so that he has a reason to punch lower on Conrad, but Conrad is trying his best to be peaceful. And it hits Jeremiah because it might be the first time someone has really told him that. But then his anger comes back to him because of course Connie said the perfect thing because he's so perfect and that's when he brings it back to Belly. Another reminder that he won. Conrad may have their dad’s love but he has Belly’s.
Then, at the bar, when Jere gets jealous of Belly and Conrad talking, and he tells Conrad in a passive aggressive voice, "Belly and I, we're going to take care of each other now. She's MY family. You, you get that right?" it's again another dig at Conrad because in Jere's eyes, Conrad “lost.” He's waiting for Conrad to get angry because he knows that Conrad still has feelings for Belly, waiting for Conrad to crack, but instead perfect Conrad tells him that he's happy for him, happy for both of them. And then Jere smiles and gives him a hug and feels better because he knows that for once has the upper hand over Conrad and it must feel so fucking good for him because he's never had the upper hand, he's always been overshadowed.
I do think its fair to some extent that Jere act a little petty since its his relationship and its crazy to have your best man be in love with your fiancé, but the way he goes about it makes it seem like he's rubbing it into Conrad's face on how he “lost.” It also says something that he starts going off the handle every time they interact, it shows just how fragile their relationship is. Rather than having the confidence that Belly is his and he's hers, he's trying to make fun of Conrad and let him know that he has no shot. If he was so secure in his relationship, he wouldn't have to taunt Conrad for it to be obvious how they feel about each other.
But because their relationship IS fragile, because Conrad will always be there haunting the narrative, the house of glass Jeremiah and Belly have built is starting to crack. And I’m sure it’ll only get worse next episode.
"Hey, whatever Jere might have done to screw this up, he's your brother. Just cut him some slack." "He didn't do anything. I did." "What?"
The Summer I Turned Pretty (2022-2025), 3x09 - "Last Call"
everything you guys are blaming belly for is adam’s fault
adam is the one who broke up the family
adam is the reason his sons have a terrible relationship
adam is the reason jeremiah is the way he is
and the worst part is that he shows no remorse and takes no responsibility for any of it
lowkey disagree with popular opinion. was it the GREATEST episode? no. but it wasnt a waste of an episode or too much filler. id say that was more of the bs side plots like lucinda or whatever. this episode was actually so important for everyone's dev.
belly finally seeing their relationship for what it is (codependent) & finding herself, having her own problems & solving them herself, becoming independent. finally doing smth for herself w no outside input, no apologies, no complaints & chasing after her own shit. conrad and his dad finally seeing eye to eye again. jeremiah realizing that its actually over & hearing it from HER, the WAY she said it, that he actually doesn't know her better than herself, that hes been telling her who she is all along, that hes not her savior. laurel & belly. idk. this ep important to me in many ways personally. i adore it. it would actually b psychotic to jump straight to bonrad happy or coming together again
not to mention the literal imagery of belly carrying her "baggage" around paris. chefs kiss
