Addison Project draft 1 attempt 3 is off to a flying start

why is it so hard to write about a character simply walking across a room, but when i have to write about a character vividly dreaming about being burned alive in gruesome detail, it all comes naturally?

CW for exactly what it says on the tin. vivid, probably inaccurate description of POV character burning alive, ect ect.

She charged forward and leapt onto the man, wrapping her arm around his neck in a tight, well-practised chokehold, aiming to cut off the blood flow to his brain. The heat from the flame coming off of him was already agonising, but her efforts distracted him from the remaining civilians, giving them a chance to run. Charred bodies laid smoking all around them; Addison wasn’t going to give him the opportunity to make any more.

He reached up and grabbed the arm around his neck. Superheated fire spilled from his hands and caught on Addison’s arm hair, setting the whole limb alight. The pain was indescribable, and only got worse as he poured more and more energy into it, but she held fast. Only a few more seconds, and he would pass out. A shrill, torn scream rang in her ears. Blackness pooled at the edges of her vision. The disgustingly appetising smell of her own cooking flesh filled her nostrils. Addison held fast.

Miraculously, the pain in her arm was dimming. The numbness spread from her hand, up her forearm and past her elbow, taking any sensation with it. He was beginning to stumble, to buckle under her weight. She was going to win!

Then her arm went limp against her will. It took a second to process what had happened as she fell backwards, no longer being held against the man’s back. He turned around, and she saw his face for the first time. She saw his sharp-toothed snarl, tusks jutting out of his lower lip. She saw his long, curled horns, growing from a forest of wavy black hair like terrible trees. She saw those sulphuric yellow eyes, glaring down at her and searing themselves in her soul forever.

He stepped on her wrist. She couldn’t even feel it. Then he shot fire at her upper arm, where the earlier burns hadn’t quite sunk their teeth in. She certainly felt that. Flame licked up her shoulder and neck, catching her hair alight. It spread down her side via her clothes, heading dangerously close to her vitals.

It was when the side of her face began to melt that she was supposed to pass out from the pain. That was when Ellie was supposed to take over and blind her attacker. Instead, he continued to slowly move his never-ending wave of fire up her arm and onto her torso proper, and she remained all too aware. The flames engulfed her entirely. Her skin charred and cracked, subcutaneous fat liquifying and seeping out of her. Her eyeballs popped, leaking fluid down her bubbling cheeks like morbid tears. Her muscles softened and turned tender, sloughing off of her bones like she was a slow-cooked lamb shank, and-

Addison woke up.

Snippet Sunday

featuring Dahlia's neverending grief because i find it so compelling to write about :3

It was always something, wasn’t it? No matter what sort of happiness she tried to grasp for herself, something would always come crashing in to ruin it. First it was her dad getting sick, then her brother running off, then him coming back. And now Katie was dead. Katie, the woman who’d saved her from herself after the last time her life collapsed. Katie, who helped her forge a new identity around the yawning hole of grief that never left her heart. Katie, who spent painstaking hours with her, designing and then inking tattoos into her skin. She didn’t even have her uncle’s shoulder to cry on anymore, now that he’d returned home. Dahlia was completely, totally alone.

She sighed, finally sitting up and doing her best not to start crying again. She’d already spent most of the day doing it, and if she continued, she was going to starve. Her stomach had been calling for food for hours, and she didn’t have the willpower to ignore it anymore.

Dahlia crawled out of bed and down the ladder from her loft, landing at her kitchen. Three cracked eggs beaten in a bowl then fried on a pan, and she had a plate of scrambled eggs. Certainly not a typical dinner, but it would fill her up. She scarfed it down, barely tasting it, and dumped the plate in the sink.

Now what?

Work certainly wasn’t calling to her. She felt too pent up to go back to bed. Maybe she could hit up the gym? No, on second thought, absolutely not. A bar to drown her sorrows in didn’t sound appealing unless it served her hometown’s kipka, and there definitely weren’t any of those around here.

With a sharp pang of sadness in her gut, Dahlia realised that all she really wanted to do was go see Katie. Hear one of her stupid jokes. Roll around in the sheets together, working off their energy. But that was never going to happen again.

A sob ripped itself out of her throat and she leaned back against the counter, sinking to the floor. Just how many times was life going to pull the floor out from under her? She was only 28, for fuck’s sake. Why the fuck did this keep happening?!

i love the process of learning who my characters are as i write them

addison started out as just a smart, analytical person but now i have learnt that she is also someone who actively ranks conversations with her new coworker in her head based off of if she thinks she did well at social interaction. she's very well adjusted :)

can't wait to get into Dahlia's pov and discover what sort of weirdo she is in her internal monologue too

Addison and Martin are identical twins, so technically both of them, but I'm gonna say Martin does on account of Addison being trans and having been on estrogen since she was 16

Who looks more like their mom?

Again, identical twins. But this time Addison is the lookalike winner :)

Who eats the most?

Addison. Martin is still in frequent contact with their parents and is influenced by their restrictive eating guidelines for the sake of his continued modelling career (which Addison broke free of)

Who has been in the weirdest situations?

Addison. She's a magic detective and Martin is a simple model and businessman.

Who sleeps the most?

Martin. Addison has PTSD and is also a workaholic who thrives on coffee, so sleep doesn't come easy or often to her.

Who has the most stable romantic life?

Martin. He has a wife and two kids. Meanwhile Addison hasn't been in a relationship for five years.

What is the worst habit of each?

Addison's is the aforementioned workaholic-ness. She literally lost her arm due to her dedication to her job and she needs to chill a bit. Martin's is probably speeding tbh. He's rich as fuck and doesn't care about tickets.

Who is the most dramatic?

Martin, easily. Addison is far too jaded. Though when they're together her more dramatic side is drawn out by him.

Who has the weirdest phase?

Neither tbh. During childhood they were lorded over and managed pretty strictly by their parents, so there was never really an opportunity to do anything 'weird.' Though perhaps Addison went a little crazy with her newfound freedom after breaking free from them. Something for me to think about.

Who is the best cook in the family?

Addison. Martin has been getting served by the family cook his entire life, while Addison was forced to properly learn after she was cut off.

What is their best memory together?

Getting to go to their highschool camp together and finally be free of their parents for a week.

What is their worst memory together?

Addison choosing to leave the family and be cut off to chase her dreams. They reunited not to long after, but it was still the first time in their lives they would be apart for any length of time, which was painful for both of them.

What is their dream trip together?

Visiting their hometown in France together, just the two of them. Unfortunately it will likely never happen as they're both too busy and Martin goes there pretty frequently on business trips anyways.

Would you rather: Not be able to shower OR not be able to change clothes?

Addison: not be able to change clothes. She wears her work uniform 90% of the time anyway. She would miss dressing up though.

Martin: not be able to shower. He needs to change clothes pretty frequently for his modelling.

Who’s older?

Addison, by two minutes.

feeling like ass so here's a little deleted snippet from Addison Project because i wanna talk about my writing and idk how else to initiate that other than shoving it in your faces

Addison raised an eyebrow. “And that would be…?” Dahlia grinned. “That you’re totally warming up to me, you just don’t wanna admit it.” Addison hummed. “Again, I never claimed otherwise. I found your work ethic and intuition during the investigation to be both admirable and indispensable, and your friendly nature makes you easy to get along with. I can foresee quite a productive working relationship between us.”  “...Has anyone ever told you you talk like a HR guidebook on workplace relationships?” Addison’s cheeks burned. Brig had indeed told her that once. She didn’t reply. “Well, whatever,” Dahlia continued. “I’ll thaw you out yet, Addy.” Addison wasn’t really sure what that meant, so she didn’t reply to that, either.

having Addison Project magic system thoughts and the urge to infodump is so strong lmao. trying to balance the exposition so it informs the reader but still seems natural is gonna be really hard. Spirit magic just sounds so interesting and I wanna share about it!!!

Picking Dahlia from my book to motivate myself to finish writing the current chapter of her POV lol

🌟- Is this oc good at expressing themself through words or do they have to use other means? I'd say Dahlia is pretty decent at getting her point across, but she's definitely a chronic procrastinator when it comes to admitting things she's nervous about. Girl will literally develop an alternate history for herself in her head to justify not telling someone something they honestly deserve to know. It's a bit of a problem of hers.

🌹- What's this oc's biggest fear Probably either having her horns ripped off (again) or losing everything she's worked so hard to build for herself (again)

🌼- What's your favorite thing about this oc? her tail has a fluffy tip and when she's happy it swishes back and forth :3
