(Hugo's) letters to Adele display a related but separate need, as revealed through the avidity of young love: that of validation from his loved ones. 'It would be impossible for me to live without being loved by you', he told her. Fearing both abandonment and indignity, he warned her that he could be desperately jealous. 'Love is neither true nor pure if it is not jealous in nature.' He was envious of her younger brother for sometimes sharing her bed and of her uncle for enjoying an evening out with her.
