Street racer!bf/gf headcanons

Note: this is set in the world of adkor - an ongoing series featuring the haikyuu characters as street racers! However you don’t actually have to read it to understand these headcanons (they’re just regular bf hcs with a bit of spice)

Includes: the main trio of love interests - Oikawa, Iwaizumi and Kiyoko

✗ As a bf he would honestly love for you to attend his races but would honestly be really scared for you. Like he wouldn't want you to be at the bleachers or a checkpoint alone because he knows he’s in a sketchy crowd and wants to prioritise your safety!

✗ So during the races where he’s not with you, you chill in Seijoh’s clubroom with the managers and everyone else who’s not racing or working. There you watch the race live on the large flatscreen that’s been divided into 12 sections - each broadcasting a different checkpoint or area. 

✗ OMG!!! He would definitely want to see you try on his uniform - wear his helmet or his jacket and he would literally melt for you <3333 Iwa my beloved. Not that he’d ever really admit that he liked it, but you’d know by the way his face heats up and he becomes a stuttering mess. 

✗ Speaking of wearing his uniform- omg he would absolutely die for you to wear a jacket or a hoodie of his to the races!! And honestly why wouldn't you? It smells good, it's comfy and if we’re being completely honest… you look hot in it! 

✗ Iwa is not the irresponsible type (*cough* Oikawa *cough*) so he would not! Absolutely never allow you to sit in the passenger seat while he drives in a race - even if you are a racer yourself. 

✗ Howeverrrr, if it’s just a chill day with the two of you, he’ll take you for a spin in his car - speed down the streets of Miyagi at obscure hours of the night or perhaps the break of dawn.

✗ Dates are so cute and fun with him! He’ll drive you to cool places that are probably abandoned or restricted/off limits and then he’ll treat you to a cute picnic. 

✗ Every so often he posts pics of you with sappy captions on instagram. His instagram is mainly just car stuff though lol :P

✗ Tries to keep you away from Oiks but you end up becoming besties with him <3, he’ll never admit it but he loves that the two people he cherishes most are close with each other

✗ Following adkor plot, if Yn ends up with Iwa he’ll likely be a bit jealous if they ever interact with Oikawa (because Oiks also fancies Yn for those who don't know). This may cause a strain on his relationship with Oikawa but also Oiks’ relationship with you/Yn. Eventually he’ll get over himself and become less insecure but it will take time. 

✗ He’s also jealous of Kiyoko, she’s so pretty and kind and loving and caring and best of all? She’s safe. Kiyoko does not endanger her life and she rarely yells and she’s just so peaceful. He just can't understand how he is so polar opposite to your ex and it makes him insecure - he’ll most likely be cold and distant towards her to deal with himself.  

✗ You've definitely made out in the backseat of his car :) 

✗ Oh! Also he lets you choose his air freshener. Calls it his “good luck charm.”

✗ He has definitely taken you on a race before - you sat in the passenger side and it's all g don't worry bb you were geared up to the max - helmet and all.

✗ Of everyone might I add. He gets both more jealous with Iwa and less jealous. It's hard to explain but he trusts Iwa with his whole heart and knows that he’ll never pull anything but at the same time he just can’t help that he’s insecure. He really hates it, he hates that horrible bubbling feeling of green fire that burns his throat like venom and he hates that it yanks at his heart strings and controls him as if he were a marionette but he just can’t help himself from suffering from it. Thats why he started going to therapy

✗ When you notice that he’s jealous - and trust me, you will, all you have to do is delicately lace his fingers with yours and wrap your other arm around his; maybe place a light kiss on it - preferably his shoulder if you can reach. This simple action is enough to calm him down and remind him that your love belongs to him - nobody else.

✗ Dates are wild and passionate. He zooms along the streets of Miyagi with a grin so large and so carefree you can't help but fall in love all over again with how at peace and genuine he’s being. He has one hand on the steering wheel and the other around you, occasionally he looks over to wink but then he turns back and and lets the wind from his open window run uncontrollably through his already unruly hair. This, ladies, gentlemen and esteemed guests, is a sight so beautiful and genuine that it would be burned into your irises as a core memory if you will - something unforgettable.

✗ Oh and, wear his jacket. He fucking loves to watch you parade around in something he owns :)

✗ Honestly she’s surprised that you’re back with her, she thought that she’d never get a second chance and that you had already moved on from her but turns out she’s wrong as you're currently resting your head on her lap (cute)

✗ When everyone’s racing you two sit together in the Karasuno team room and cuddle while you watch the race go down on the large flatscreen. 

✗ You definitely eat snacks while you watch because duh, who wouldn't? The race makes you so nervous that you just have to sink your teeth into something to prevent your nerves from short circuiting.

✗ She holds your hand like she’s gripping onto you for dear life while you watch the races - she says it's because she’s nervous, which is true, but she’s also scared that you’ll leave her so she wants to hold you tight to prevent that from happening. 

✗ Dates are so cute, you go to small cafes and she does her manager stuff while you stress and rip your hair off over the complexities of building an environmentally friendly car. Honestly the whole time she sneaks glances at you and blushes at how cute you are when you’re stressed out. She won't admit it though. 

✗ PLEASE PLEASE reassure her that you don't feel any negative emotions towards her and that you love her. She needs it. 

✗ Okay if we’re not following adkor’s plot and you're a street racer yourself then she is going to be so worried for you! She will constantly check up on you before your race and hold you in a hug so tight you swear you’re going to die from lack of oxygen; though she only does this behind your team’s garage/locker room/club room because she gags at PDA 

✗ Definitely gives you the same type of hug after you finish the race. 

✗ I think she would melt if you wore some of her clothes or even an accessory. 

✗ Omg please drape her scarf over her and say “don't want you getting a cold now- or maybe i do because then id get to snuggly the hell out of you ;)”

My Dear Friend

‘Oi Shittykawa! Stop spacing out, we’re about to go in an important race.’ Oikawa stays still and refuses to acknowledge Iwaizumi’s presence. Iwaizumi sighs, ‘dont race. Your head hasn’t been in it the past month, it's too risky to race in the streets when you don't have a clear mind.’

‘Im fine-’

‘No youre not! You haven't improved one bit over the last month, you're more cunning than usual and to top it off you've been sleeping with every girl and guy that’s thrown themselves at you. You're going to get an STD if you're not careful.’

‘I don't need you looking out for me like I'm some trouble prone child.’

Iwaizumi clenches his fists. ‘I'm your best friend you piece of shit! That's exactly what I'm supposed to do!’ he shouts, headbutting Oikawa. ‘Don't you understand- what's wrong! We promised each other not to keep secrets!’

‘I'm not keeping secrets per se.’

‘But you're hiding something.’

Oikawa and Iwaizumi stop and stare at each other, ‘it has something to do with Yn doesn't it?’

‘No!’ He begins but is interrupted by a coughing fit, ‘sorry, choked on some spit.’

Iwaizumi sighs and sits down next to Oikawa, ‘a month ago I spent the day with Yn before they rushed off somewhere in a panic. You didn't come back to the apartment until one in the morning or so and you were piss drunk. You had two girls with you as well. Since then Yn hasn’t spent much time with me - not that they really did beforehand but at least before they did not avoid me. Doesn't help that they’re back with her ex.’

Oikawa’s eyes widened at this, ‘back with their ex?’

‘Yeah. It hurts man.’

‘Oh… I'm sorry.’ 

‘Don't be, not your fault. I guess the timing just wasn't right.’

‘You're going to give up just like that?’

‘I guess.’

‘That lame.’

‘You’re lame.’

‘Not as lame as you, coward.’

Iwaizumi tackles Oikawa to the ground, ‘what am I supposed to do? Ruin her relationship?’

‘Yes! Well no, but don't give up. She seemed pretty hesitant to get back with her ex- I’m sorry Iwa, this is my fault.’

Iwaizumi pauses and sits back up, realising that Oikawa is being serious for once in his life. ‘How do you know that, what makes you sorry?’

Oikawa takes a deep breath in and out. ‘Yn and I are- were strangers before I cut it off and we discussed things between us while still remaining somewhat emotionally distant-’ he pauses, ‘to put it simply, they caught me in the middle of a breakdown and they consoled me and took me out for a drink. Non alcoholic of course. That night we made a deal to become strangers with benefits - we confide in each other and spend time with each other without being friends or falling in love and all that,’ not that that really worked Oikawa muses in his head.

‘So you and Yn are friends?’

‘No, we never were and never will be. We were strangers. Hence the use of past tense Iwa-pooh.’

Iwaizumi rolls his eyes, ‘so you were strangers that acted like friends. What happened?’

Oikawa looks down and hugs his knees closer, ‘it's my fault, she came late to our meet up and I got angry, I… I had so many feelings bottled up and I took my anger out on her and it's too late to repair it and I’m a horrible person Iwa. Oh my god, I really am a bad person. What am I doing here? I- I need to leave, I’m toxic to this environment, I’m toxic to you Iwa-’

‘Stop it. Oikawa you're human! Humans make mistakes. You just made a mistake but you can fix it if you explain and apologise. I know how much you're suffering and I've never understood why you can't just tell me about your problems,’ he shifts to a softer tone, ‘but at least you're learning now, well done bud.’ He pats Oikawa on the back. ‘I’m proud of you, you’re finally telling me what's on your mind - like what best friends do.’

There are so many questions Iwaizumi has for him but he knows Oikawa is too fragile at the moment and he doesn't want to scare him off so he stays silent, offering support through the soothing motion of his hand rubbing in circles along Oikawa’s back.

When Oikawa calms down, Iwaizumi still continues to rub his back. ‘I'm not crying anymore, you don't have to do this,’ but one look at Iwaizumi tells Oikawa he is no longer doing this to comfort him, but to comfort himself. 

Iwaizumi has tears gathered at the corner of his eyes and appears to be doing everything to keep them contained.

‘Iwa-pooh,’ Oikawa sighs as he brings his own arm up to repeat the rubbing motion on his friend’s back. ‘You know it's not good to bottle up your emotions. It's your turn to be vulnerable now. Come on, let it out… there, there, it will all be better soon.’

‘I'm just... worried for you and heartbroken I guess.’

‘My my, what a lovely friend you are. No point worrying about me, I'm an adult. I can handle things myself.’

‘No you can't, you're immature.’

‘Lalalalala~ I can't hear you!’

‘This is exactly what I mean!’

‘Listen up Iwa-pooh, let's get your date back.’

‘I've already told you they’re back with her ex, idiot.’

‘Oh yeah I heard but I don't care. Let's break them up-’

‘No! Oikawa you shitty bastard we’re not doing that.’

‘Tch, why not?’

Iwaizumi sighs, ‘because we're not bad people. If it's not meant to be, it's not meant to be.’

‘Fine, I guess I'll just get her back as my friend then.’

‘So you admit it? You are friends-’

‘No! No! No! A hundred times no! That was a mistake I didn't mean to say. Besides looking at the time, the race is going to start in ten or so. See ya!’

1.6 Can We Be Friends?

‘Hey stranger. Been a while.’

How long has it been since you heard that voice? A month? Maybe two? Whatever it is, it has been a long time. You can not erase the memories of someone so important in such a short time, sure you can pretend to but your subconscious knows better. Maybe it was a mistake to push him out of your mind because now that he is in front of you everything comes back in an overwhelming wave of emotions. The good and the bad. You do not know what to feel - there is too much. Euphoria, a rush of happiness because he is finally back yet angst, he left you hurt and lonely. Wait. You stop your rampant thoughts, I’m with Kiyoko, you tell yourself, Oikawa was nothing more than a frien- a common stranger. 

‘Heard you’re with Karasuno’s pretty manager…’

‘Mm.’

‘Thats uh, that's good for you,’ he pauses to take in a sharp breath, ‘About that day… a month, 3 weeks and four days ago-’

‘You counted?’

He looks away from you, ‘yeah…’ his voice is shaky and quiet, and you wonder why he is so nervous. Is it you? No, no it cannot be- you shake these thoughts from your head and concentrate on the man in front of you.

‘I've uh, I've  missed being strangers with you.’

‘Yeah me too,’ he breathes out slowly, ‘If I'm completely honest- I'm uh... well. It's not that I'm not honest or that I find it hard to be honest or that I'm a liar. I'm not a liar, I promise. It's just that I uh, I just find it hard to find the right things to say and when I do it's just, it’s too late to say them or I'm too scared to say them or I can't will myself to say them. I’m a coward. Yeah a huge one- look I'm sorry! I'm really sorry for the way I acted, I took your care for granted and I uh should've heard you out. You're a good friend- no! Stranger! Yes. Stranger. You're a good stranger. I um…’ 

You look at him with a smile, ‘You’re rambling.’

‘Yeah, yeah I am. Sorry. I guess it's just what happens I- right. Basically, I want you bac- as a friend! No! As a stranger! Please come back to me? I miss your warmth and the comfort and solace that comes with a kind stranger-’

‘Me too.’ He looks at you with shock scribbled all over his face, ‘I've missed you too, Tooru. Maybe, just maybe…’

‘We can be friends?’

You giggle, and he follows suit. ‘Who knew we’d be in sync?’

‘Yeah that's weird, we only just reconnected y’know?’

‘I know right? Maybe it was meant to be?’ You say it jokingly but it idles in the back of your throat, you said it jokingly… right? 

He hums lightly, ‘I've done some soul searching this past month.’

‘Oh yeah? Have ya found anything?’

‘I think… But I'm not sure yet. I'm not sure when I'll know but I hope I can find a conclusion soon… Maybe, maybe you can help me? And give me some advice like you used to?’

‘As a friend it'll be my honour.’

Oikawa feels heat prick at his cheeks, ‘Not now’ he whispers to himself.

‘What was that?’

‘Maybe later? We can head over to the gas station and get a good ol’ vanilla bean frappe?’

‘Sounds perfect.’

‘Racers head over to the cockpit! The drag race begins in t minus fifteen minutes!’

‘Saeko’s as loud as ever huh?’

‘Well she is in charge of the announcements,’ you laugh, god he’d missed that laugh. 

‘Guess I better head over huh?’

‘Yeah I guess you better, I'll be cheering for you - quietly of course. Can't let my team know,’ you wink at him, ‘Oh and Tooru?’

‘Hmm?’

‘Nice makeup. The glam look suits you.’

He flashes you a gorgeous smile and honestly? That’s just as good as any other reply he could have said. You turn around and head back to Karasuno’s garage, ‘Shit’ you curse to yourself, ‘Why is my heart beating so fast?’

‘Yn! Where’ve you been? I've been worried sick!’

And like a harsh wave on a windy day, you feel a rush of guilt splash over your whole body. You had forgotten, even if for a little while, that you had someone - that you had Kiyoko. Oikawa’s just a friend you tell yourself, you only feel this way because he is finally back. Nothing more, nothing else. 

You look up into her beautiful, deep blue eyes and this time, for the first time in a long time, you notice how much she cares for you. It is so obvious, the way she looks at you like you are the only one in the room and it's so, so unfair. It's unfair that you cannot look at her that way. She deserves someone who loves her just as much as she loves you and you hate yourself, you really do, because you know you’ll never love her like that. 

And then it strikes you. You only want her for her body. And the wave of guilt? It becomes a tsunami and suffocates you from the inside out. You feel your heartbeat speed up - when did it become as fast as the race cars? Then suddenly the tight, unforgiving noose around your throat ties itself stiff, you can't breathe. The last thing you hear before your world fades black is the desperate cries of Kiyoko, what’s she calling, you ask yourself, god… she's calling after me. I wish I could call out to her.

You wake up to a familiar scene, you are at Kiyoko’s. 

‘You're finally awake.’

You turn your head towards her soft voice, ‘Mm Kiyoko? What happened?’

‘You went missing for about 15 minutes before the race started- or well before we had to get ready. When you came back you fainted and Asahi helped bring you here.’

‘I’m sor-’

‘Don't apologise. Just tell me what's on your mind.’

‘It’s, Im- I…’

‘Please,’ she begs.

‘Kiyoko I- I'm sorry. I don't know if it's just… I'm just overwhelmed at the moment. I'm sorry.’

‘Mm,’ she mumbles, moving closer to you. You feel her warm arms encircle you and pull you towards her, your back to her chest. Your heart does not speed up, it calms down. Maybe that's the effect of familiarity? ‘Lets just have a nap, yeah?’

‘Yeah,’ you whisper.

Her warmth brings you comfort, a comfort you wish you could give back. Maybe you are? Maybe you're not… you don't know. Her light snores used to be music to your ears but now they're nothing more than a mesh of messy drum beats, booming and thumping around your head. A small tear slips down the side of your face, ‘I wish I loved you.’

Kiyoko wishes you loved her too, she wished you loved her for more than just her body and the memories but you don't. Not that it matters, she thinks, as long as you are with her - as long as she can touch you, she doesn't care how you feel about her. She’ll take what she can get and she is oh so desperate for you, your touch, your taste, your sounds and oh god she must be a masochist. 

When did she become so sadistic that she got off on her own pain? On your pain! She loves that you're broken and hurt and confused because that means she gets to be with you and oh she wishes that you’ll stay that way forever. 

That is horrible isn't it? Yeah, she knows she’s fucked up but she’s fucked up for you and she wouldn't have it any other way.

Mistakes 

‘Please tell me I’m still dreaming,’ you whisper but you know you are not, you know that the plush of the mattress and the cool breeze from the spinning fan is all too real. But most importantly, you know where you are and what you did. Now there is no coming back, no redemption, no words to express your guilt and your regret. 

You do not want to stay any longer than you have to so you slowly make your way out of the bed that smells just like her. She still has the full body mirror that you bought her - four years ago. You find yourself staring at, or more so at yourself, focusing on your chest and neck that is covered in hickies. Your hand moves up to touch a particularly large one and the events from the night before come rushing back - replaying themselves in your mind. 

It was hot. Body on body. There was sweat and there was spit but neither of you could find it in yourselves to care. All that was on your mind was pleasure - giving, receiving, experiencing. 

You shake your head trying to forget everything and you resume picking up your discarded clothes across her bedroom floor. You walk out of her room with your eyes glued to the floor, too scared to look up and make eye contact because you fear that you will not be able to move - let alone refuse a request from her. 

You look up before you can stop it and see her standing in her small apartment kitchen, carefully pulling something out of the oven. 

‘Morning,’ she softly greets.

You stiffen up and reply with an awkward ‘morning.’

‘Do you plan to stay for breakfast?’

‘No,’ you reply swiftly, ‘I'm going to leave now. Um, thanks I guess and uh sorry.’

She looks down and smiles tightly, ‘it’s okay, you're welcome.’

You quickly make your leave.

‘Hey, thanks for coming.’

‘Yeah no worries. Why wouldn't I wanna pick up trash with a cutie?’

 You playfully huff.

‘You're not in a good mood are you?’

‘No. and I don't know why I invited you to be honest…’

‘No point thinking about it. There's always something comforting about finding consolation in a stranger.’ Futakuchi notices your body tense up, ‘I guess it doesn't always work as good as it does with a friend who knows the true you. Maybe.’

You don’t respond to him and you continue to stay focused on picking up trash. He lets out a sigh, ‘you don't want to talk about it? Understandable, I'm probably not the best guy for the job. But maybe you want to talk about something else-’

‘How about you? Why don't we talk about you. I don't really want to focus on myself at the moment.’

‘Well okay then… let me think. My boyfriend and I have our three year anniversary coming up but I don't know what to get him. He's a hard guy to shop for.’

You are taken aback by this, ‘Kenji! Why do you flirt with me if you have a boyfriend?’

Futakuchi chuckles, ‘I’m bored and I've seen you in class, you seem like a nice and mostly non-judgemental person… unlike a lot of other people...’

He trails off and you decide to not push it so instead you give him a small smile, ‘I see.’

‘That's weird isn't it.’

‘No. I think maybe you were just looking for someone to confide in, like what we're doing now.’

‘Yeah I guess so.’

You stand up and look over the horizon, the spring breeze softly brushes against your skin. Today is beautiful. The sun is shining but is not so bright you would go blind, the sand beneath your feet is pleasantly warm and the waves are gently crashing into the shore. ‘I wish everyday were like this…’

‘As in the temperature and the serenity… or picking up rubbish with yours truly.’

You throw your shoe at him in hopes of wiping off his dirty smirk but when it fails to leave and only grows larger you find yourself amusingly irritated with him. 

‘You're going to regret that princess.’

You laugh and poke your tongue out at him, ‘then come get me!’ 

That is all it takes for Futakuchi to run off after you as you run along the beach. You have made mistakes and you will continue to make mistakes, but your friendship with Futakuchi is not a mistake and you are thankful to have someone to muck around with.

The kind smile Kiyoko wore when she wished you goodbye turned into one of self pity the moment you left her apartment. ‘God I’m so stupid,’ she whispers to herself, ‘why cant I get over my ex?’

Kiyoko drags herself to her room and touches her neck. You had done a number on her and she liked it. She really, really liked it. She wishes you were her’s and she was your’s. However, Kiyoko knows that you'll never be with her, not when you have so many options. She knows that the only time she can touch you is when you are hurt and in need of familiarity. 

‘Does it make me a monster to wish the person I love to be in pain so that they choose me over anyone else?’ Despite asking the question, Kiyoko knows the answer. She is a monster - a lost and lonely monster who craves comfort and love beyond anything else. But maybe, just maybe Kiyoko would continue to be a monster if it meant touching you once more.

She feels so sinister. And weirdly she is okay with that. Kiyoko clutches her shirt and falls to her knees. Kiyoko knows she must be some sort of sadist or masochist, wanting you to be hurt so she can comfort you only to be hurt in return, and as painful as that cycle may be, she tells herself that it is worth it - that you are worth it.

Route Three

Oikawa finds himself racing around the streets of Miyagi at full speed. There is no one insight and the only sounds that can be heard are the boisterous humming of the car and the slow low-fi music playing on the radio. Oikawa has already passed the first checkpoint and he is on his way to the next. He feels the pressure when he sees two cars gaining on him.

‘No, not yet. I haven't caught up to Ushiwaka.’

Oikawa cranks up the gas and takes a risky turn down a dingy alleyway, he knows it is not a dead end - in fact it is his secret shortcut. The other cars don’t follow him down, he thinks they are probably laughing at him. He realises it was risky to go down the alleyway with other drivers watching but surely they wouldn't catch on. And besides, even though they were gaining on him, they were a good kilometre away and the area was littered in alleys, it was easy for someone to get confused. 

He skilfully navigates his way through the twists and turns of the narrow alleyway before he comes out into the street - the two races nowhere to be seen, whether that be a good or bad thing he will have to wait to find out. Oikawa decides to stay on track and go as fast as he can to the finish line - the arena. He notices that the screaming is getting louder, he is almost at the third checkpoint now. When Oikawa closes in he realises that the cheers were not all for him, Ushijima Wakatoshi had just driven past and was well on his way to the finish line - to first place. 

‘Fuck!’ he says, ‘I'm not too late I can reach him! I can reach him!’ Oikawa continues to race through the streets. 

He sees the bright lights of the arena and he pushes his pedal harder - though it is not like that helped as his car was already doing the max speed. Oikawa crosses the finish line at almost record speed. Almost. 

The cheering is loud, so loud. But it is not for him. Maybe some of it is. Ushijima cleared his previous record, he came first. Oikawa lets his car slow down as he runs laps around the drag track. Once the car slows enough to come to a halt at the pit stop he leans back into his seat and lets out a frustrated sigh, ‘today wasn't the day, but neither was last time, or the time before that and the time before that-’

‘But your time will come. It won't be easy and it'll take a lot of hard work, but your victory will come and it will be so much more satisfying after all these defeats.’

Oikawa looks up to the man who opened his door, ‘Iwa-pooh,’ he says, ‘thanks.’

Iwaizumi offers a rare soft smile at his best friend, ‘it’s okay.’

When Oikawa steps out of the car he sees his team cheering, Hanamakki runs up and headlocks him; ‘you may have lost the battle but we have won the war!’

‘W- what the hell are you on about?’

‘Look! Seijoh ranked higher than the rest of Shiratorizawa! We came first overall!’

Oikawa stares up at the board, ‘wow,’ he breathes out. It wasn’t often that anyone bet Shiratorizawa overall, but it had happened - Seijoh is the winner. The team runs over to them and together they cheer and celebrate. 

‘Nice going, captain!’ Says Mattsukawa 

Oikawa looks at his teammate and grins, ‘nice going as well, you raced good.’

‘Better luck next time, Shouyou!’ you say as you pat your friend’s back. 

He slumps further down into the chair, ‘next time’ he mutters over and over again.

You remove your hand from his shoulder as you make your way over to Kiyoko. ‘So, I guess I'm willing to speak with you. Let's hear your side of the story.’

She offers you a kind smile, ‘thank you.’

You face away from her, ‘why don't we head over to a convenience store? We can get a drink and talk about it.’ 

‘I’d like that.’

The two of you say your goodbyes to everyone and you text Oikawa to let him know that you will not be able to make it tonight - though you sort of figured he would not have come either, Seijoh did win after all. 

The two of you leave the venue and make your way to your car. The ride to the closest Seven-eleven is deafeningly silent, almost hard to breathe in. You try to focus on your breathing, there is so much to be said and you want to listen and take it all in.

You find yourself sitting next to her facing a playground, the night is quiet and the only sounds you can hear is the soft breathing of Kiyoko and the beating of your heart. ‘I suppose I should start off by saying I'm sorry.’

You sigh and turn to face her, ‘yeah that seems reasonable.’ 

She smiles a bit and looks down to her lap, ‘I'm so sorry for leaving like that, it wasn't right and I know it's so cruel for me to come back here to you but… it's just- I know we’re meant to be. I go for a few weeks and when I come back you're here, at my workplace- well, night work. We’re going to be around each other for awhile. Maybe, maybe this is actually fate. When we started dating we were so young, can we restart - as adults?’

You draw in a large breath, ‘Kiyoko, I miss you - I really, really do but this is all so sudden. I came into this racing scene because Shouyou asked me to and because I'm able to help build this amazing eco friendly car! Just imagine how much better the climate will get without all these cars, imagine if we can actually do it! Imagine the differences we can make. That car- this car that I will build with Karasuno has the potential to be revolutionary, it takes top place in my mind…’

Kiyoko waits a few seconds to make sure you are finished, ‘I understand, your passion for the environment and this car, and also how overwhelming this all must be for you, maybe… maybe we can just start off as friends for now?’

You smile at her, ‘I’d like that.’

She smiles back, ‘it’s nice to have you back, as a friend of course. So how are you finding this whole racing scene?’

You look up at the sky, carefully calculating your answer; ‘I like it. I like that I've met so many different and interesting people. I like that I've been reunited with two people who used to mean everything to me. I like that it changes pace. I just like it.’

‘Reunited with two people who used to mean everything,’ she quotes, ‘who might these people be?’

‘You side eye her, ‘well you for starters, and Haji - my childhood best friend.’

‘I see,’ she says as she looks down to her lap. 

You let out a yawn and stretch your arms; ‘I'm tired, let's get going now.’ She stands up and gives a hum of agreement before the two of you make your way back to your car.

Go-Karts

‘Using hydrogen seems to be the most interesting and probably the cheapest option, wouldn't you say?’

You hum in agreement, ‘i'm still not exactly sure how we’re going to do it, there's barely any articles out there. I say we start by researching hydrogen powered things such as hydro powered dams.’

‘What is a hydro powered dam?’ asks Yachi;

‘You know those big dams that produce power? Well water flows through the metallic spin turbine blades which are connected to generators. This generates power that is then sent to homes and businesses.’ 

‘Hey everyone… I really hope we don't get assassinated,’ says Nishinoya slowly, ‘after all, we are making something revolutionary that could destroy the fossil fuel business.’

You grimace while Yachi visibly cowers back into the booth; ‘H-hey Nishinoya! Don't say things like that!’ Ennoshita yells.

‘What? I'm just preparing you all for the worst case scenario! I already told you about old man Tesla right?’ he says defensively. 

Ennoshita relaxes back into the booth and sighs, ‘let’s drop the topic,’ he pauses and looks at his watch, you watch his eyes grow wide; ‘It’s already 4 o’clock!’  One by one, everyone adopts the same expression. Time really does fly when you’re having fun. 

‘Why don't we first build a car? Then we can get an idea on how they’re built firsthand. Later we can develop the car into hydropower,’ you suggest.

‘That's a good idea but why don't we start with go-karts first? They are similar to cars and a lot easier. We can experiment on them before we throw ourselves into the deep end. The racing track is a go-kart business during the day and it shouldn't be too busy around this time.’ Yachi proposes. 

You smile at her, ‘yeah that’s a good idea.’

Once the four of you arrive at the venue you notice the name, “Papa’s Go-Karts”  and for some, odd reason you find it fitting. Though, there was no chance that you would be able to explain or even justify why you think so, but if you tried, you could say that it was just a homey sort of name that reminded you of Karasuno and the accepting nature they have. 

When you walk into the building you notice a familiar face; ‘hmm, Kenji? Haven't seen you in a hot minute.’ You shoot him a smirk which he gladly reciprocates.

‘Yeah, you're right babes,’ you scoff and gag at the sickenly sweet pet name. Futakuchi feigns innocence as he whines out an overly dramatic, ‘aww, babes! You act like we didn't spend an hour or so picking up trash together this morning.’ 

You raise an eyebrow but before your lovely banter can continue on further, you remember the reason you're here in the first place, ‘yeah yeah, listen up futacoochie-dear, we’re here to make a difference in the world and we will start by building a go-kart. That's all good, yeah?’ You laugh in his face at his shocked expression.

‘Futa-coochie did you say? I cant believe i called you a cute name and you go ahead and call me fucking coochie!’ You continue to laugh along with Nishinoya who happened to witness the entire situation. 

‘Sorry to interrupt,’ says Ennoshita, ‘but I’ve got us two go-karts, and we can get working on them in the garage.’

‘So,’ you start off, ‘where do we start?’ 

‘We dismember the one on the left!’ Yells Nishinoya, you turn to look at him but before you get the chance to question, Yachi gives you the answer;

‘He’s right Yn! We often dismantle the go-karts and remake them for fun and for competitions! If we know how to build a go-kart then we’re one step closer to figuring out how to hydro power them,’ Yachi’s looking at you with a wide smile and you can’t help but send one back.

Dismantling the go-kart proved no real issues, it was actually putting it back together that caused problems. Everyone had different ideas that clashed. It wasn't until Ennoshita decided that we should split into teams and have a competition to decide which way was a better way. So with Yachi on your team the two of you easily dismantle the other go-kart, and with your obviously good chemistry and not to mention, you both have a similar way you want the go-kart to go so you were confident in winning the competition. 

After an hour the go karts are ready to be tested… you had certain expectations for your kart, such as you expected it to be able to move. But it didn't. 

Nishinoya is toppled over laughing, ‘I- it didn't even move!’ he wheezes. 

You face away and you feel your face heat up; ‘y-yeah that’s a bummer.’ Next to you is Yachi who’s crouched on the ground with her head between her arms.

Ennoshita places his hand on your shoulder, ‘well that’s all good. You are up against our head engineer’ he motions to Nishinoya, ‘on the bright side your car had a good design and if it had worked it would have been faster because it had a more simple design.’ You unknowingly make a confused face, which he would have interpreted as you not quite getting it; ‘air resistance slows down moving objects - so in this case the go-kart, when an object is large, bulky and strangely shaped the air catches on to the surface and then the air resistance gets larger-’

‘Think of swimming in water! When you move you feel resistance pushing back on you, proving difficult to move as free as you would on land, air resistance is basically the same thing.’ 

Ennoshita glares at Nishonya, ‘well yes. He's right but I was getting there!’

You smile at them, ‘I see. I guess that means the less space an object takes up, the easier it can move.’

The boys smile in return, ‘yep!’

‘Iwa-pooooooh! Don't you get it! I just don't like her so what!’

‘Shut it! Trashykawa! I can't believe you just ignored her request for help! What is wrong with you! You fucking idiot!’

Oikawa stands up straight and looks at him, ‘listen… I just don’t like her. I'm not sure why but there's something about her that annoys the shit out of me.’

‘Is it perhaps because they don't like you?’ Oikawa flinches at the accusation and Iwaizumi sighs and lowers his tone, ‘she’s my childhood crush and i’ve been somewhat reunited with them. You're my best friend yeah? So can't you just take one for the team and deal with them?’

This time oikawa sighs, ‘I can try I guess… but only for you Iwa-pooh~’ and just like that he was back to his usual, irritatingly cheerful self.

The blue sky is slowly dissipating into harmonious patches of orange and pink. ‘It looks beautiful, doesn't it?” 

You jump slightly at the unexpected but in no way unwelcomed voice, ‘yeah. It’s like something out of a fairytale.’

There is a small content huff and you finally turn around to see Iwaizumi looking out into the horizon with a tranquil smile on his face. 

You smile looking at the sight, ‘that’s a rare look. When we were children you only wore boyish grins and child-like frowns.’

He lets out a sound of confusion - as if he did not believe what you had said, ‘is that so?’ he chuckles a bit, ‘well, that look is usual for you. You’ve always had a kind smile on your face.’
