some of the oldest pieces of horseman literature that still exist are vampire butch4butch lesbian pulp stories.
this particular illustration is from an edition of "In Between Mountains," a story dating back to the Mid-First Era, written by the possibly mythical Horseman author Singing Easement, who is said to be from the High Rock faction and had worked closely with the Dwemer before their disappearance. The book itself is about the beautiful daughter of a Shepherd, Iron Branch, being taken in by a mare named Dramatic Needle, part of a group of Vampiric Horsemen that reject the teachings of the Elders and roam free without the influence of the Horsemen gods, the Dam and the Sire. this one is iconic enough to be translated into several languages, including Ta'agra, Dwemeris, and a few scattered unfinished Tamrielic translations. Most of the translations change the species of the protagonists, and passed off under pennames. The few translations that keep the protagonists as Horsemen are in Dwemeris, suggesting that Horsemen had yet to go into hiding and were close enough to the Dwemer to share pieces of literature between each other.
EDIT 10/28/25: i chose to revise this drawing(though calling it a mere revision is a bit misleading, as i redrew a good amount of the piece from scratch) because i was not satisfied with the original. in this new version, Dramatic Needle seems less like a "scary dominant object of desire" and more like her own character, which is something i struggled with portraying in the original drawing.
yeah in-universe this illustration is meant to be from a pulpy piece of literature where neither characters have any more personality than is necessary for the story's goal(letting the reader read about a hot self-insert lady being "accosted" by a hot vampire lady) but nevertheless i feel like Dramatic Needle's lack of personality in the original drawing was a detriment to the piece. i feel like ive rectified that somewhat, and the drawing is all the better for it
click the "keep reading" for the original, if you're interested to see what's changed. i hope you agree that the new version is a vast improvement.
