Season 1 Petra is a fighter, a mercenary who's made a reputation for herself. She is known for her strict deals and almost never interacts with anyone but the people who pay her, making her unapproachable. The only one she can truly rely on is herself. And she's convinced herself that she likes it that way.
When Jesse stumbles into her life, she expects them to fear her. She just has a presence that demands respect, awe, and admiration, so people are wary of her. They can tell what kind of business she does with just a glance. Instead, despite being afraid, despite admiring and respecting her, Jesse proves that they're able to pull their own weight.
When the Witherstorm attacks the city, Petra knows the right thing to do is run. That's normally what she would do. She's not exactly a selfish person, as she would say. Just not someone who would usually stick out their neck for someone. But she finds herself staying, for some reason.
Then, as they're running from the Witherstorm, she's caught in something she can't escape for the first time in her life. She doesn't know these people well. She's barely talked to Jesse, or Olivia, or Axel. She doesn't want Lukas to see her as a liability. So she expects them to just leave her behind. But all of them try to go back for her.
So Petra respects them in return. When they reuinte, Petra wants everyone to know that she'll stick around. And she wants them to stick around. Having their back, making little jabs at them, that's how she shows she'll always be there. A "You called, I came" situation.
But the Wither sickness makes her irritable. Petra can't fight it, she can't find some obscure ingredients to fix it, she won't be getting any offers on how to fix it in exchange for some blaze rods or ender eyes. She's terrified for the first time in her life. Something she can't overcome on her own.
Even though she needs it, Petra can't ask for help. That's just not what she does. Asking for help is like a weakness in her eyes. It shows you're not strong enough to pull your own weight. Her reputation as a mercenary would be ruined. Mostly, her pride. She likes to think of herself as someone who never needs help, because she's simply strong enough to not need it.
Either having wither sickness or amnesia, Petra has to learn to accept help.
When Season 1 ends, Petra has better accustomed herself to acting "weak" around her friends, and her and Lukas's previous friendship only grows stronger.
But by Season 2, everyone is drifting apart. They have jobs and duties and work to do, and in a way, they've left each other behind. The New Order can't go adventuring anymore, so Petra is left to do so herself. She begins to slip into old habits and eventually gets Miss Butter stolen from her by Stella.
Petra has difficulty letting go of the past. She wants things to go back to the way they used to, when the New Order was just kids hanging around in a treehouse. She feels abandoned by them, but there's no way to go back. They've all grown up.
Champion City is a place for Petra to stay safely stagnant. She doesn't have to change or develop and can freely drop back into old habits without anyone stopping her. Without realizing it, she'd been isolating herself as well. Just in a place where she felt admired like she used to be.
Before stealing Miss Butter, Stella had been fueling Petra's ego to keep her. But when she loses her sword, Petra refuses to find a new one, because of her attachment to the past. That attachment then leads her back to Jesse, who helps her continue progressing and learn to let go, because everyone grows up, and it's just something you have to deal with.
