maybe I'm not the person to be making this comparison, so forgive me if this isn't the most accurate, or comes off as insensitive I don't mean it like that in any way.
but I can't help but feel like kept folk who say adoption built families are the exact same as bio families give off the same vibe as white people who say they don't see color.
like I get the message you're trying to convey, but you really should acknowledge the different lived experiences and needs of adoptees and how the adoption industries flaws and (for those of us who have it) relinquishment trauma often still echo into our lives.
do you hear WISH ON AN EYELASH PT 2. BY MALLRAT playing? oh, that must be RORY MARCHISIO breezing by. i don’t know if you recognize them, but they look like JACK INNANEN to me. i heard that HE has been in town for TWENTY SEVEN YEARS which is crazy considering they are TWENTY-SEVEN years old. yeah, they live over on PENNY LANE, and i heard that they work as an CONTENT CREATOR / ANIMAL HANDLER AT BIANCHI FARMS (IN TOWN). i love that they remind me of FADED PEANUTS CARTOONS IN NEWSPAPERS, THE BELOVED GOLDEN RETRIEVER BY HIS SIDE, NONSENSICAL THRIFT STORE TSHIRT FINDS, but … ugh, their playlist is so weird. why is/are WHAT'S NEW SCOOBY DOO (muse c) in the queue?

► ACT I. ⸺ you're young and you're precious, hearts big as texas ...
rory doesn't remember his birth parents, but the story goes like this: teenage mother gets handed a bad deal, does what she thinks is best and puts her baby up for adoption. this is how he lands smack dab in the middle of 12 children — their own version of cheaper by the dozen, though desperately wanted and loved regardless of the amount of mouths to feed. sava was a preschool teacher at the montessori school that had opened up, leaving his job at the combined elementary school at the start of the new year. isaac was a semi-heir to a construction company, but he created an offshoot of his own, marchisio tools and lumber, which is kind like a home depot or lowes but focuses on area-owned and local businesses. they eventually expanded into 15 stores across new england, but their main shop is in goshen.
the family business – more offshoots concerning construction and home improvement, for some reason found itself in florida; then found itself building its station in ciderpoint by the time rory was less than a year old, and he hasn't left since — the family crowding into a actually decent sized house (but is any house decent enough for 12 people???) and begining to build roots here.
rory doesn't remember a time where he wasn't ridiculously doted upon; despite the sheer amount of siblings (and some that would come and go, as they were foster parents after all), he never felt slighted or ignored. with every person who would come or go, the love in the house seemed to get bigger. they weren't exactly flush with cash, but they were rich in love or whatever bullshit his dads liked to say. the children were encouraged to express themselves, moreso of a hands-off kind of parenting, willing to let them reap the consequences (as long as they weren't too dire – they could get a stomach ache from eating a whole box of gummies, but they weren't about to allow being in the back of cop cars). if this is a logical choice or because they had their hands full already is not here nor there, because his dads always showed up when he needed them.
► ACT II. ⸺ this is the story of my life and i think i'm finally getting it ...
rory is free spirited in the same way a golden retriever is — inhibitions don't exist, and he's willing to try anything once as long as it's not scary. childhood was spent playing in their hand-made treehouses, ‘fishing’ in the streams on their various acre home land and attending his older siblings sporting and other events. he's not the worlds brightest bulb, but he tries his best to be a good person at the very least. always trotting around behind his older siblings or holding a baby to his hip, the family is exceptionally close. taught empathy, humility and maybe too little personal space boundaries.
he's put into all sorts of activities, if not by his interest, than wanting to be the same as his older siblings (who he idolizes lowkey). from music, arts & crafts to sports – which he stuck with football all the way up until high school ended – there was nothing his parents didn't try to make stick. rory is a jack of all trades; good at some, best at none. his attention span lacks in ambition and he gets halfway through a project before it's abandoned. he has good intentions, but the actualities leave many things to be desired. there's no real drama; his life is actually kind of idyllic, which only serves him to attempt to grow into a good person — he's not perfect, and he struggles, particularly with dealing with social situations (diagnosed autism when he's 13), and tends to just be kind of out there. this, in his family at least, was never something to be ashamed of — always taught to embrace his quirks and differences, rory carries this with him; an unabashed sense of self, hoping to spread it to everyone else, too. everyone is a friend and deserves a friend (unless they're mean - but they still deserve love).
he stays in town all of his life; rory doesn't mind this. his mind doesn't wander to what else could be out there. he's settling roots of his own; investing in his future in a short-lived college career (for childhood education, he loves kids) and dropping out within 6 months because.. he's not fit for school. instead, due to the nature of his parents business, he starts as a ranch hand at bianchi farms - doing farmer things because he's more of a physical worker than anything else.
► ACT III. ⸺ this aint watertown & i'm on some alien ground ...
CAR ACCIDENT, BRAIN INJURY TW it was june 2025. the day was typical. sunny, late june, and rory was heading home — it wasn't some big thing. rory was driving through an intersection, younger brother in the passenger seat, then he woke up with his dads crying faces in his face. there's no memory, no recollection of what happened. rory has never asked. the idea of facing that head on is already too much, and he was in the hospital for days. it was kind of boring, really, because everybody kept coming to check on him, but they kept looking at him weird. his little brother – tanner, who's 21 — was fine. rory knows he took the brunt of whatever happened.
things were fine. then they weren't fine. constant forgetfulness, lack of organization, lack of general functionality were all big signs. rory knows something happened, and he's not stupid. the doctor's say it fucked up his frontal lobe, something something impact, but he doesn't like to hear it. very dismissive, ignores all of his problems in favor of trying to get his life ‘back to normal’. and he tries, but it doesn't work how he wants it to. continues to miss work on accident, loose things (couldn't find his keys he left in his car for 3 days), starting to pick fights with people after blowing up at them. it's gotten better, now, but not perfect.
he changed jobs to something less laborious — animal handler instead, as he loves animals regardless. currently apart of a channel with his friends finding spooky mysteries and it brings him more joy to have a purpose, something fun, to do — constantly worries about how he's perceived after it all. wonders if people are treating him differently, but not enough to notice. doesn't want to be treated any differently just because something happened, but can't verbalize this. becomes upset (sometimes without reason) when he thinks this is happening — always feels bad after, but he's trying his best. there's been a lot of changes in the past year.
► EXTRAS. ⸺ in my generation, in my constellation ; moon & saturn ...
nickname rory comes from when he was a toddler and couldn't pronounce his own name. no one ever really bothered to correct him – too endeared, i guess, but that's what he goes by. rowan is only really used if he's in trouble or someone is trying to get his attention.
obsessed with love and weddings -- tries to set his friends up which ends up horribly because ??? bro, relax. will take things the extra mile and start planning his friends weddings in his head, dates and locations and all. should probably go into that as a career ngl. sometimes he gets so hyperfixated on this for some reason (he wants love).
is also an insane blabbermouth. DO NOT TELL HIM ANYTHING — his brain is kind of a defunct game of telephone at this point, he gets things confused and facts mixed. he will make more mistakes than humanly possibly because of this. he will spread the rumors you tell him with earnest (doesn't realize he's not supposed to) and then be confused why people are upset with him.
he's a bit of a lag behind; slow on the uptake, but he'll get there eventually. he's exceptionally great at research, and is a semi-good teacher depending on the subject. thinks in abstracts and word associations more than anything else, and some people find it weird or off putting. it's just how his mind always works. color coordinates sometimes and other times he just choses comfort over everything; is a terrible multi-texter due to his thoughts lapsing from either thinking too hard or taking a dial-up minute. i promise he's trying lmao give him a bit
the worlds sweetest guy; in elementary school, was given the award of everyone's friend which is just about his biggest description. confrontation makes him nervous and he tries to keep the peace whenever he can. anxious when people are upset, or thinks they're upset, and tries to do anything to make sure it's all smoothed over by the end of the day. kind of annoying about it ngl
is the middle child of 12 — exactly number #6, and it shows. he's very go with the flow, letting things happen kind of guy. he's so used to bending to the whims of others that he's never really had much of a chance to explore his own wants or needs in a meaningful way. slowly starting to do that now that his life isn't based around his family but still experiences decision paralysis, which makes things hard.
BRAIN INJURY, SEIZURE TW / tbi has been … not great. officially diagnosed, but belated and begrudgedly. struggles a lot with light and noise sensitivity, organizing information and making sure he fully understands what's going on. all over the place despite trying to keep it still, sometimes his sentences don't make sense. lots of reminders in his phone (forgets to make them) and in his house (forgets to write them). gets a lot of headaches but can work through them for the most part. has developed focal impaired awareness seizures due to the accident, but tries not to show anyone; these don't have any known triggers, and can happen at any time. people just think his memory is lapsing. definitely does not let people know when he's struggling — he's the 'happy guy'.
loves animals. eventually will probably be working at a non-profit for them or a shelter of some kind. trying to convince oliver to adopt more cats, but he just has his beloved golden retriever named liberty who joins him at literally every place he can get her in; it's weird if liberty is not by his side. she is very very very beloved and often referred to as his daughter - he takes her care very seriously. more than his own. she's 3 years old and the love of his life, only accepting applications for her step parent thank you!
he is not the brightest bulb – brain injury notwithstanding – but he means well. instilled in him since babyhood to be a good person, do good by people and make sure your crew is taken care of. fiercely protective of his friends and family. trying to branch out and work on himself and grow a bit of a backbone but it's slow going. a very very lovey puppydog kind of guy. big dog who thinks he's small enough to fit in your lap kind of deal.
weirdly obsessed w/ collectables. his grandparents used to watch them as kids, and his meemaw would show him hers and talk about her beanie babies. he thinks theyre soooooooooo cute. the idea of selling them sends him into a homocidal rage.
► CONNECTS. ⸺ you know i'll go if you go if you're cool with that ...
family — adopted siblings, former foster siblings, cousins, by - marriage: the marchisio's are a big family regardless of how you slice it — i like to imagine they planted a lot of roots, so i think it would be fun to have some family afoot. open to really anything, including siblings of his parents (nephew rorybear..), and not-related-but-might-as-well-be! i have a really specific wanted connection for an older sibling (think they were kind of opposites, so they had some kind of fight before this sibling left town) but after his accident, they returned for support, now they have a weird kind of limbo happening.
adults (non-fx): roommates!! this would be relatively new, as i think rory would want to get out from his dads' house due to .. everything that changed. i like to think they're a silly bunch of people who do silly little things.
ex friends: they used to be as thick as thieves until something happened. plenty more to be plotted.
antagonistic connections!!!!: give me people who think rory's annoying, maybe he spread an accidental rumor and fucked their shit up, maybe they have beef with his siblings, etc etc.
now i curse your acqua di gio: these guys were exes, and something happened — i like to imagine it was some kind of puppy-love high school thing, but they both kind of fell face-first and fast, but the relationship ended just as quickly.
who do i call now?: this person and rory were … something. he's not sure if they ever were officially something, but they were extremely close, and at a weird point of ‘emotionally together’ and acting like they were dating without the label. at a certain point, they became fraught, and their tether broke - now they're kind of in that weird i'm mad at you limbo.
liberty's godparent: liberty is his 3 yr old golden retriever who is essentially his child — this person and rory are close enough that in his will (google document), liberty goes to them. maybe cute childhood besties or something.
Just saw a TikTok about an adopted child “you’re not my real mom”-ing the woman who adopted her, to which the woman responded by insulting the child, implying she wasn’t wanted by anyone. Comments are all on the adopter’s side, calling the child ungrateful. I am confused. What happened to helping your child with emotional regulation? Not taking their meltdowns to heart? That is an extremely cruel thing to say to a child likely insecure about that exact thing. Maybe I watched too much Full House, but you can’t talk the issue out? I’m not an adoptee myself, but I’m starting to get the impression that most people truly view these children as damaged goods that should feel blessed to be picked at all and should basically be Cinderella their whole lives to pay back their incredibly selfless adopter.
Mr. Cowen.. we've been trying to reach you about your father.
The calls had gone ignored for a couple of weeks now, thinking they were just scams. Loan companies kept trying to entice him to take out thousands of dollars with them, so at this point, Jesse assumed any call was them and sent straight to voicemail or hung up on. And now, here he sat, in Carroll Medical Center, completely numb after accidentally answering one suspected robo-call in a disgruntled need to tear some poor SOB a new one.
Ivan Cowen had gone to urgent care over a simple headache that wouldn't go away, over two months ago now. While in the doctor's office, he had fallen over while they were trying to assess his weight. A few nights after that, he went into cardiac arrest and suffered damage to his kidneys.
Jesse? Jesse.
With a blink, his stare shifted upwards, to the doctor standing there in one of those pristine white lab coats, clipboard in hand. "Yeah?"
The doctor — who even knew what his name was anymore — looked nervous and uncertain how to broach this subject with him. Jesse felt his shoulders tense, wondering if he was finally getting the news.
You said you're Mr. Cowen's son, correct? Were you adopted?
"Huh?" That wasn't the news he anticipated. "No," Jesse shook his head, "I'm not adopted. I'm his biological son." Not that it was anything he was proud about, but there was no need to open that can of worms with some man he couldn't recall the name of.
Dr. Whoever, shifted uncomfortably. Jesse, we ran the tests.. you're not a match for him.. and, I'm sorry to break the news like this, but you're not his biological child, either.
Jesse's head leaned in, ear towards the other man like he hadn't quite heard what they just said. "The fuck you just said?" Now, he stood, which only made the physician take a step or two back for safety measures. There was no telling what kind of mood someone might be in when they learned such troubling tells. "What the hell do you mean, I ain't his son?"
Just that — you aren't his biological relation. It's possible —
It was around this time that Jesse stopped being able to hear everything over the sound of rushing blood in his ears. The doctor seemed to be going on about a quiet adoption, that maybe Mr. Cowen had never wanted him to know, that these things usually had a way of coming out at some point, and he didn't necessarily agree with the practice, yet it wasn't his place to dictate how families handle their children. That he was sorry, again, to break this news now, especially when his visit to the hospital was already under stress. And did he need anything, or want to speak to someone?
Jesse? Mr. Cowen?
That wasn't even his name, apparently.
"I heard you," he barked, waving the man away. "I wasn't gonna give him my fuckin' kidney anyway, he's a fuckin' bastard." Jesse pushed past the doctor then, unsure where he was going, but he wasn't staying there. The awful thing was, he had been seriously considering he owed that man a kidney. He was the reason Ivan Cowen even suffered that original debilitating headache, which they discovered was caused from some skull injury maybe a couple weeks prior to him finally coming in to get seen.
They may be unaware, but Jesse knew that put it right about the time he'd had that physical altercation with his father. When he was trying to run from Carroll and all its inhabits. When he'd cracked the man's head against the wall and screamed threats if he ever touched him again. And if the man was in any kind of state to inform someone, he might very well have pegged him by now, too. So, what was one kidney, right? Ivan could keep his mouth shut and possibly recover from this. Jesse wasn't sure what would happen if they did find out — worse yet, if the fucker wound up dying from this.
That could be prison.
And, since that all wasn't enough, Jesse learned this bullshit on top of it. Ivan Cowen's chances of survival now were damn near abysmal at this point. Jesse had been his only shot. Even if he could find his sister, who's to say if she was his actual child either? Who's to say they were even blood siblings at all?
By the time he got outside the hospital, his chest felt constricted and it was difficult to breathe. "What the fuck.." Jesse exhaled sharply, suddenly sending a boot into the side of a nearby garbage can, causing the metal thing to tip over and spill out. "What the fuck!" He squatted then, trying to catch his breath, head absolutely reeling with the entire day's events.
𓏲 * ( cis woman, she/her ) ⸺ pictures of eleanor louisa middleton, the forty year old artist/business partner, have been showing up all over my feed, and considering the last time they were #trending, it was due to someone making a plagiarism claim — i’m not likely to unfollow anytime soon. with their an erdem white cotton maxi dress with black paint splattered loafers, they’ve managed to garner a reputation for being more compassionate than erratic. their critics say that they’re more delusional than creative when they aren’t too busy focusing on their paint splattered loafers, trying to master technology and frantically double messaging people. reputation.com has taken to calling them alice in wonderland in order to avoid a lawsuit ( again ).
triggers: death, adoption, mental illness
eleanor was born to a single mother. she was never planned and was indeed a strain on the household. her mother hid her pregnancy with her until she went into labor and told her parents. it was a disaster and continued to be when el was born. none of it was her fault but her mother was already suffering from mental illness, something that wasn’t helped by the judgemental people around her. then suddenly, the woman was gone in an accident - eleanor's own family didn't want her. she would scream for her mother, for anyone but they wouldn't come.
at the age of five, she was adopted by the daughter of edward astor middleton, a known billionaire . money prevailed in getting the woman what she wanted, a child when she was a single and vile person that would say and do anything to get one. when unable to conceive herself, she looked towards adoption and the process was much quicker taking a five year old, plus, she skipped out baby night feeding so it was of no concern to her.
it took her a while to get settled but with edward’s help, eleanor managed. she always felt a bit out of place with her peers; she didn’t catch onto jokes that fast nor did she necessarily care about designer things or status. she was labelled as odd and that’s how it stayed. she loved singing, mainly to herself and also art. that was her happy place along with being with people - even if they didn’t understand her, she still found the positives to enjoy it. her grandfather was very supportive with whatever she wanted but she never once asked for anything apart from ‘dinners and dance parties’. in the absence of her mother's caring, edward was the one to make her feel like she was exactly where she needed to be, even be quick to put her into therapy, not because she was broken but because she needed that external support where she could be honest. el was always grateful, always reminded that she got lucky with the life by her mother and edward took that pressure off. the whole world probably had some opinion on the billionaire but he was perfect to her.
when she was in her teen years, she worked as a model for her mother’s cosmetic company. without realising it, el was responsible for her mother’s success because it made the woman branch out into new foundation shades - it wasn’t perfect but it was a step in the right direction and her mother was applauded whilst felicity became the face of the entire company - not just the face but the name of astoria cosmetics. you couldn’t go anywhere without seeing her face. it did cause controversy with her being young, as well as eleanor receiving hate for how she looked but it got people talking.
it was a lot of pressure to put on her but she was agreeable in nature and never wanted to upset her mother so never said anything. she fell into her art work as a way to process emotions and things she cared about . through connections, she did manage to get a place at nyu but she’d crumble and pull out only a few months in. it was mainly sitting in her studio, headphones on being in a completely different world while she created and that was and continues to be her happy place.
the news that her grandfather was ill and he wasn’t going to get better hit eleanor the hardest. he was the one person who she felt understood her, the one that tied her to a lot of things and made her feel loved. impulsive and intense behaviour came from her during this time, that was in her second month at university. living in denial was a hard place to be as her mental health deteriorated quickly - el's mother wasn’t the talkative type and every time she tried to accept reality and try to talk about her feelings with the woman, she’d be shut down and thrown into a schedule. she’d dropped out and hadn’t told her mother - being dishonest was not her thing...
she had a breakdown at a photoshoot. the photographer was quick to intervene and attempted to comfort her until they could get her somewhere safe. a day after, she was hospitalised but her mother wanted to get her out quickly to 'salvage their reputation'. the entire ordeal upset her.. it was just her and her mother and although she felt broken, she needed to be there to comfort her mom because she could see that the woman was struggling - it was hindering them both that she still didn’t want to talk about it.
the reading of edward middleton’s will was a big event. eleanor wasn’t expecting to get anything as he’d given her more than enough love to make up for the lack in her life. it was a great surprise to everyone, including her, when edward left everything to her. overwhelmed didn’t even cover it. his savings, current bank account, shares in his company, property... everything. she was so confused as to why and did feel sorry for her mother but she didn’t even have time to think about what she wanted to do with the billions (tabloids will say millions which is half-true because they underestimate the situation) before the woman that she called mother would be filing to court to try get it revoked and passed to her.
eleanor did not want to fight with her mother. the woman didn’t even tell her about it, a lawyer made her aware that her mother wanted to take it from her and was bringing her sanity into question. despite her mental illness, the ordeal was ruled in her favour but winning against her own mother didn't feel like a win at all. she'd dropped out of university but had the luxury of focusing on her artwork as she had the privilege to do so. all it took was one person to come into her studio and the rest was history. eleanor was always humble, never flaunting her wealth in people's face (not for the most part, anyways). when she did, it was because she wasn't that self aware to recognise she was doing it.
she managed to keep herself steady for a while. her medication and therapy was working, she felt comfortable, her artwork was being admired and sold for $$$$$$$$ - she was happy, right? she felt like she had gone from someone that was easily satisfied to never being satisfied. it was then when she found someone she'd call her best friend. the two were very different but got on really well - eleanor felt safe, like they wouldn't judge her and when she had a bad day, they'd always find a way to cheer her up and if they couldn't, they'd make sure to sit with her in her penthouse to make sure she wasn't alone.
however, pressures would get to her - with deadlines, her attempting to try have a hand in her grandfather's company from a legacy... everything seemed so stressful and then it felt so threatening. it was a long time coming but she sold the majority of her shares in her grandfather's company (she still owns 25% but is more a nepo figure than actually having to do anything). however, it didn't feel like a weight had been lifted - her grandfather would be so disappointed with her. she just wasn't up to - she was flighty, unreliable, a people-pleaser and whilst he'd always encouraged being kind, there was a point where she needed to stop letting people walk all over her.
the last straw was when someone accused her of plagiarising their work. she hadn't, she'd done no such thing - if anything, they had taken some inspiration from a few of her pieces. another law suit was following and she really didn't want that to happen again. the other was adamant that she'd stolen from then when she hadn't; it was quite upsetting to her. eleanor was far from professional in the weeks that followed. perhaps she'd dreamt of the other's piece before they even released it? or she'd seem their artwork in passing? she didn't know but none were good defences. "i didn't know!" or "sometimes i have dreams that come true" wasn't something that would hold up either and she was crumbling at the start of proceedings. she felt like if it came out to the public, her image would be ruined and it would lead them to question other pieces. art was her passion and she automatically assumed the worst because she felt like it - eleanor had always been her worst critic.
she was already having an episode but people in her circles were ignoring it. it hadn't helped that her therapist had moved on because of a new opportunity and whilst she had set her up with someone else, there were issues from the get-go. her awareness and fear of everything getting worse was making it worse in itself, until she was no longer aware of it and labelled everything as fact because it felt so real to her... it was the footman in her building that took her to the hospital after she returned to her penthouse block, looking worse for wear, without any shoes on and then she insisted on taking the stairs up because she was too afraid of the elevator (that she'd used earlier that morning)... she was hospitalised and admitted to in-patient therapy for four weeks, missing one of her own art shows but it was used as a fundraiser for a mental health charity instead of the money going to her - she'd decided she didn't need it.
things aren't settled with the other artist as of yet but she's trying to come to some sort of arrangement - she just doesn't want to look like she's guilty but perhaps she's unintentionally done it. eleanor doesn't trust herself right now at all, especially after recent events. however, she's really trying to take care of herself and try to get over this newly found fear of creating something. however, pretending that it was just a blip and isn't a worry for her isn't doing her any favours.
little facts:
she’s not bothered about designer labels. if it’s pretty, she’ll buy it, whether it’s from chanel or a charity shop, it doesn’t matter to her (but she will buy her basics from brands like the row just because she can).
tries to be positive to everyone and everything but it makes her feel good. she is naive when it comes to trusting people but wants to be loved so is ultimately a people pleaser.
cries very easily - if she’s happy, sad or scared, she’ll be crying. el also very much wears her heart on her sleeve!
was labelled as ‘kooky’ pretty early on but doesn’t really mind. she does try to fit in but it never ends up being how she imagined. she's diagnosed with schizophrenia. it's not that she hides it, just doesn't feel the need to mention it most of the time.
has drunk since she was a teen and still doesn’t know her limits :)
she is messy, both in organising and behaviour.
either cant sleep so she decides to scrap book while listening to music at three am or she does nothing but sleep.
has taken up yoga for the first time and she thinks she's terrible at it - not flexible and unbalanced but she does run a lot when she needs to clear her head and will say it's better to do that here than across the country on a treadmill.
loves to wear suits and blazers! messes her hair up within 3 mins of leaving the house.
she's recently been giving a plant as a gift to help her focus and look after something (part of her self-care) but she's really bad at keeping green things alive - she's really trying though.
is incredibly loyal and loving but doesn’t try to ask too many questions. her personality can sometimes be imposing as it is.
is trying to act like nothing is happening so is over-compensating with her chirpy personality.
likes all types of music apart from country, sorry :/
her fave colours are blue, green and purple but not together

According to the ID docuseries, the bulk of evidence — including hospital paperwork, dental records, testimony from her birth mother, and multiple medical tests (some of which the Barnetts were aware of at the time of re-aging) — indicate that Natalia Grace was born around September 2003, making her 23 years old as of 2024 and clearly a minor when she was left alone in Indiana. But few questioned the legal change to Natalia Grace’s age, and those who did assumed her size was due to her medical condition and child-like behavior was due to trauma, developmental delay, or deception.
| if you’re hearing YOU SIGNED UP FOR THIS by MAISIE PETERS playing, you have to know ZELDA “ZIGGY” ABRAMS (SHE/HER; CIS WOMAN) is near by! the 30year old BARISTA AT GREEN THUMB CAFE has been in denver for, like, FIVE YEARS. they’re known to be quite RECKLESS,but being RESILIANT seems to balance that out. or maybe it’s the fact that they resemble SOFIA BLACK D'ELIA. personally, i’d love to know more about them seeing as how they’ve got those DOG-EARED ROMANCE NOVELS, OAT MILK LATTES AND PATCHWORK TATTOOS vibes. and maybe i’ll get my chance if i hang out around the RIVER NORTH ART DISTRICT long enough!

Zelda "Ziggy" Adira Abrams didn’t have a real home until she was 12 years old. Her mother Miriam had her at just 16 years old, and the two lived in and out of homeless shelters, run-down apartments, and friends’ places throughout her childhood. Up until they moved into an actual home, she had never known anything other than moving around, being a nomad, herself, and her young mother.
Ziggy, named after Zelda Fitzgerald but nicknamed after the infamous David Bowie persona, was resigned to raising herself as well as her mother. She had to grow up and be an adult from a young age, from circling job ads in newspapers and making sure they made it to the shelter on time to get a room, or at least to eat. There was never any real room to be a child.
It was Ziggy and her mother alone for a good while, until when she was five years old. A five-year-old Ziggy had no idea why her mother’s body was changing, she just knew that sometime later they were inside a hospital, there was a baby in her arms, and then suddenly, there wasn’t. They walked out of the hospital, just her and her mother, alone again. Ziggy would learn many, many, many years later, that her mother gave her little sister up for adoption.
Ziggy learning to read and loving to read is credited to her mother in many ways, the first being that her mother would take her to the library during the day to keep warm and have something to do, and Ziggy needed an escape from everything. It started with princesses in high towers being rescued by their prince and turned into sometimes cheesy, but often thrilling, romance novels. Ziggy fell in love with love.
When they finally got a real home, it was only because her grandmother passed away, leaving the three-bedroom home to her only daughter, Ziggy, and her mother Miriam moved right in.
It was all rather the same Ziggy needed to raise both herself and her mother, except this time her mother had landed herself a job, a waitress at a diner at night. During the day, Ziggy would go to school, and a night her mother would head off to work, leaving the young girl alone to her own devices.
But ultimately, Miriam Abrams wasn’t the mother a young girl needed. She didn’t get the puberty talk, she wasn’t taught how to do her hair or makeup, these were all things she had to pick up from magazines. She learned to cook enough to feed herself, but she was barely allotted a childhood, having to be the adult her mother wasn’t. No pretty dresses or elaborate bat mitzvahs paid for by her mother's boyfriend could make up for it.
Ziggy left the first moment she could. With a high school diploma, 1,000$ to her name, and a bus ticket, she was off to California, as far away from her mother as she could possibly get.
Ziggy slept on couches again and worked odd jobs until she found something more permanent as a waitress, paying 30 dollars a night to sleep in a bedroom that had a curfew of 10:00 pm. She didn’t go to college. She had no direction whatsoever. She just wanted to experience life.
So experience she did, she lived in California, Seattle, and New York, and finally, she landed herself in Colorado, just her, her beat-up little jeep wrangler, her books, and a few garbage bags filled with clothes.
PRESENT
That was five years ago now, and Ziggy has been the happiest, and the most stable she's ever been. She's got a dream job as a barista at the Green Thumb, reading, and writing romance novels in her free time. It's her dream to be published, to walk into a library and see her name amongst her favorites, but for now, just writing them is enough. She lives in Artist's Alley Apartments in RINo and has an orange Maine Coon cat named Papaya. She still has no idea what she's doing, but she's happy and having fun trying to figure it out. She sends her mother money once a month.
