See? My cats are cute! And helpful!
Pai’s little smile when he hears that Itt is doing well and got into the major of his dreams is just perfect, so soft and small and almost reluctant. He’s truly still in love with Itt, as much as he’d like to deny that, as much as he doesn’t want to believe in love.
See these two kittens? These kittens are... oh.... around 6 weeks old. They’re old enough to climb and jump and play and sleep and pounce on anything that looks huntable.
One of them has a STORY already.
It’s hard to tell from this photo, but the little all-black kitten is very timid, and only still sitting on the couch with me because her sibling is between me and her. She’s very, very good at hiding and running away from the Big Loud Scary Humans (or dog!) She likes... her moms (Sister cats had 11 kittens between them!) her siblings, and hiding.
She is... VERY GOOD at hiding. VERY GOOD.
Now, for reasons, most of which my mom and I have had HEATED DISCUSSIONS regarding, my mom has had... a lot of kittens in the past 8 years, since she moved to her house. Somehow, they still find NEW and INTERESTING places to be.
Also, a few weeks ago, I was at my mom’s house helping her re-arrange furniture, moving beds, cleaning things... because the LARGEST BED was in the SMALLEST BEDROOM, and that was just silly!
Remember that thing about the tiny kitten being good at hiding? Yeah.
So, we moved the dresser out of that room, (taking away the kittens’ favorite hiding place!) and relocated as many kittens as we could find into another bedroom... (for obvious reasons, this involved putting a bunch of kittens in a basket!)
...and then moved the bed, and vacuumed, and cleaned the floor, and moved other furniture, and generally did a lot of loud, scary things, with weird-smelling substances, and an unsettling quantity of water, if you happen to be a very small kitten.
This took a while. Like, several hours.
While all this scary cleaning was going on, I kept abandoning mom to play with kittens in the other room. The kittens’ moms were... unhappy about the kittens being 1)moved and 2)locked in the WRONG ROOM, so I kept letting the mommy cats in and out of the kitten room.
Eventually, I gave up on that, and let the mommy cats take the kittens into the OTHER OTHER bedroom, where everyone happily played under the only bed still sufficiently bed-like for them to play under.
Now, we knew we’d only had 9 kittens in the kitten room, but we saw no hint of the all-black kitten, and the mommy cats were VERY INSISTENT about bringing everyone else under that bed, so... we assumed they had 2 kittens, and we had 9, and everything was good and safe and the kitten-math was in good shape. (I want to stress this-- we had worked very hard to make sure the kitten math worked. We did NOT want any kittens in the room where we were moving large objects around!)
As you may have guessed, this was... not the case.
Fast forward to the end of the intensive room-cleaning, with the small bed relocated and made more bed-like, and the floor all clean and dry, and all sorts of other things in better shape. Mom and I are standing around talking, petting kittens! Holding kittens! The kitten that mom is holding abruptly objects to this fact, and demands immediate release and/or rescue by a mommy!
Now, if you’re not familiar with kittens, especially ones this young, you might not know that kittens complain rather a lot. This kitten was almost, but not quite, to the point where one of the mommy cats would have come to find out what their silly human kitten-sitters were doing, and maybe demand that we return the kitten. Unhappy enough that I took the kitten back from my mom, ready to return him to his mommies; not unhappy enough that there was anything actually wrong.
His mildly complain-y mew was answered by the most desperately unhappy ‘mom where are you I’m hurt and scared and everything is terrible and I’ve been abandoned for days in this large uncaring universe” mew I’ve heard possibly ever. Mom and I look at each other. That sound definitely came from this room. That sound DEFINITELY didn’t come from the kittens we were holding. (who complained again, mildly.) We heard the miserable mew again.
I rushed the non-miserable kittens back into the room with their mommies, and mom and I carefully checked all the places we’d previously been sure no kittens were. We double checked the closet. We triple checked under the desk. We checked between the wall and the bed, where it was UTTERLY IMPOSSIBLE for a kitten to be.
And then... we looked at the bookshelf.
(I don’t have any good pictures of this bookshelf, but it’s in the left corner of this picture. This gives you an idea of what this room looked like, when we heard this mournful mew.)
Now, again, mom has had entirely too many kittens in her house. Most of them spent their first month or so of life in this room, since it has the best closet to be set up as a nest for mommy and kittens. All of the furniture in this room has been around kittens this size. Lots of kittens this size. And with all the moving of furniture we’d been doing... there was nowhere for a kitten to BE, we thought.
But... there was a missing kitten. And we hadn’t moved the bookshelf. But... but... we checked behind it when we first took the kittens out of the room! We’d checked multiple times! But then the kitten cried again, and... it was definitely under the bookshelf.
Mom tilted the bookshelf, a little bit, and suddenly the kitten was audibly panicking significantly more, and we don’t know how to fix this or how to rescue her or anything! I could just barely see the space under the back of the bookshelf, which we previously thought was, y’know, flush with the floor. I couldn’t see the kitten.
And then, suddenly, I could, as she, scared out of her teeny adorable kitten mind, ran as fast as her tiny legs could carry her out from under the bookshelf. She tries to hide under the desk. She freaks out more, as nothing in the room looks like she expected. We catch her, and try to pet her to get her to relax. This doesn’t work, so I gently take her and gently put her back with her mommies. She is still very scared, but she curls up and her mommy snuggles her and she starts nursing.
She’s physically fine, from this ordeal. But... she is by FAR the most timid of the kittens. Even two weeks later, she is suspicious and wary around anyone larger than her mommies, though she’s starting to MAYBE be a bit braver around humans-- after all, I did manage to get that picture of her.
And that is the story of how, even after the truly ridiculous number of kittens mom’s had in her house, they’re still finding new and interesting ways to get in trouble.
Here’s another kitten picture, for reading all of that!
The world is a crazy place today, and also entirely too rainy, so here are two pictures of my dog and a kitten, continuing to claim that that chair is THEIRS.
(It’s not! It’s MY chair! But I don’t mind them sitting on it, so...)
There’s a space on the shelf-thing that’s part of my desk which was roughly cat-sized. So I put a crocheted mini-blanket I made forever ago when I was practicing stitches (Like, seriously, this thing’s older than all our current cats. The LATEST it could have been made is 2004, and it’s probably older than that!) in said cat-sized space... and now there’s a CAT SITTING HAPPILY ON IT!
Which is basically the best thing! (A cat! Sitting on something intended for cats to sit on! Crazy!) She looks happy, she’s up high-ish, she’s not knocking anything over... I’d post a picture, but she’d surely move if I got up to get any device that could take pictures. You’ll just have to take my word for it that she’s being super adorable!
Eeee, now she’s using one of the random things up on that shelf as a pillow!
I never screenshot my loot, or usually even pay much attention to it, but look how cute! Two little cuties, and fluff! :D The only way this could have been more adorable would be if the other fluff had been the dandelion seed instead of the blue fluff!
They’re tiny little ghost-things sneaking into my lair bringing tiny fluffy plant seeds! If I could give one dragon two familiars, I’d stick them together with a dragon! :D
Oh my gosh! Imagine Violet doing that thing with the little girl from the movie Spirit: Wild Stallion of the Cimarron. Except with Vulcan, Maxie’s Camerupt.
