Oxford ADOW locations (Part 3)

Radcliffe Square

Or how many times can one fit the Radcliffe Camera in one single pic…the answer is A LOT apparently! 😆 To be fair it is the hub of Oxford, with so many icons of the city all situated in close proximity. If you enter via St Mary’s Passage you will find St Mary’s Church University Oxford at the bottom, Brasenose College and Brasenose Lane to your left, All Souls College to your right, and the Old Bodleian Library at the top.

Sadly due to Covid restrictions both Brasenose College and All Souls College (Matthew’s College from the books obviously) have decided not to allow any visitors until further notice. It’s a shame about All Souls as it looks mighty impressive from the outside. (Also a bit of inspiration for J.R.R.’s Tolkien Lord of the Rings Twin Towers). I took my picture by passing my camera through the closed gate btw.

If you go to Exeter College, through and up the Fellows Garden you can take great pictures of the square. And if you feel very brave and not scared of going up a tiny ever winding staircase (like I am), for £5 you can go all the way up the tower of St Mary’s Church and take in the stunning views!

The Radcliffe Camera itself houses a part of the Bodleian Library, and also functions as a reading room. Non students or non Library card holders can only visit if you book the 90 minute tour offered by the Bodleian. Which due to Covid restrictions may not be available.(it wasn’t when I visited)

Side-note: those 18th century cobblestones are gorgeous! But What the Heck were they thinking… be prepared is all I can say! Try the pavement or walk on the middle strokes if you can, because I tripped soooo many times. I felt less bad after re-watching the episode, because even Goodey tripped just for a split second and I don’t blame him!

So when I rewatched those episodes, I thought Hubbard’s lair looked familiar… 😉

You can book a 45min guided tour to see the underground Crypt at Gloucester Cathedral. Really recommend it. Just be careful as it is really dark and the ground is very uneven.

So kudos 👏👏👏 to the crew members who had to set up all that filming equipment!

A Discovery of Witches Locations (Part 1)

It took me quite a while! Especially due to the Covid crisis, but FINALLY after two years I got to visit the beautiful city of Oxford and the Cotswolds in September. Had an amazing time and as the students and most tourists weren’t back yet, I almost got the city to myself most of the time 😊 And yep I can confirm it can get seriously foggy in the mornings.

This is part 1 of a series I plan to do, as I tried to visit as many “A Discovery of Witches” locations as possible. Totally understandable due to the pandemic, several of the Colleges didn’t allow any visitors. But I did get to see Christ Church, Exeter, Magdalen and New College as they just re-opened.

A bit off-topic, but I HIGHLY recommend booking a student / College room via universityrooms.com, if you plan to visit Oxford solo or as a couple during term-breaks. I stayed at 117 St Aldates Building (part of Christ Church College) and got to have my included daily breakfast in the Great Hall (Used as Inspiration for the one at Hogwarts and they used the staircase as a filming location for Harry Potter) I paid £65 a night, and was only 200m away from the High Street, and just a 5 minute walk from Radcliffe Square.

Someone asked me a few weeks ago where the scene from ADOW S1 was filmed with Peter Knox & Diana Bishop having tea together.

So here’s your location 😊 (I started watching Show Trial (BBC One series) and they used the same location - as the series is set in Bristol, a quick Google search did the rest.

Oxford ADOW Locations (Part 4)

The Bodleian Library

What would a ADOW tour of locations be, without a visit to ‘the Bod’? I doubt I have to tell you all just how crucial this place is to the plot of the All Souls trilogy. So I will just say that I’m looking forward to see its return in series 3!

The Bodleian libraries consists of several buildings and underground tunnels, which all together houses over 13 million printed items! They also own several warehouses outside the city, as the Bodleian is allowed one copy of every single published book in England that’s registered at Stationer’s Hall. With thanks to Thomas Bodley for that! Hence the ever growing expansions throughout the past centuries. They basically run out of space every few decades at the current rate of publishings.

The Bodleian offers several guided tours and self audio-guided tours throughout the day. I do advise you to pre- book the guided tours online, because they only allow 10 or 12 people in a group / time-slot. I got to see the Divinity School and the Duke Humfrey Library. It really is absolutely beautiful! However no photos allowed upstairs as you do see the students at work. So totally understandable.

Ahem I know it’s quite a large picture 😆 But yeah I tried to fit all of the Bodleian buildings in one photo. So the Old Bodleian, the quadrangles, The tower of the five orders, Divinity School (in and outside), Duke Humfrey Library (ceiling), and the beautiful plaza with the Clarendon building with the New Bodleian building in the background. Finally not part of the Bodleian, but you can see the Sheldonian Theatre as well as Hertford Bridge (Bridge of Sighs).

ADOW Oxford Locations (Part 6)

The White Horse Pub / Brown’s Café

Both still very busy locations with the locals! If it wasn’t for the pandemic would have gladly taken some pictures inside the pub, but it just felt too crowded (for me!). Whenever I passed by Brown’s Café, there were no empty tables available. So am glad that they are still doing so well! I just took a few pictures after they’d closed.

White Horse Pub is across the street from Exeter College, next to the famous Blackwell’s bookshop. (Broad Street)

Brown’s Café is inside the iconic Covered Market. (Ahem not too far from the delicious Ben’s Cookies stall 😉)

Oxford Trip : ADOW Locations (Part 2)

Exeter College

Exeter College is just gorgeous! I can see why the location manager chose to film the scenes set in ‘New College’ at Exeter instead of the actual New College. Just be aware when you visit that because of its popularity, the gardens are often used for weddings and other receptions or events. So when I visited with my alumni tour guide Trevor, he told us that almost every week they have to put up a large party tent… The Broad Street entrance where Matthew awaits Diana (and then leave together) is closed, so you have to enter from Turl Street. The beautiful building opposite the Broad Street entrance is the Jackson Building at Trinity College.

Entry fee was £3 when I visited it for a second time for better pictures.
