Oxford ADOW locations (Part 3)
Radcliffe Square
Or how many times can one fit the Radcliffe Camera in one single pic…the answer is A LOT apparently! 😆 To be fair it is the hub of Oxford, with so many icons of the city all situated in close proximity. If you enter via St Mary’s Passage you will find St Mary’s Church University Oxford at the bottom, Brasenose College and Brasenose Lane to your left, All Souls College to your right, and the Old Bodleian Library at the top.
Sadly due to Covid restrictions both Brasenose College and All Souls College (Matthew’s College from the books obviously) have decided not to allow any visitors until further notice. It’s a shame about All Souls as it looks mighty impressive from the outside. (Also a bit of inspiration for J.R.R.’s Tolkien Lord of the Rings Twin Towers). I took my picture by passing my camera through the closed gate btw.
If you go to Exeter College, through and up the Fellows Garden you can take great pictures of the square. And if you feel very brave and not scared of going up a tiny ever winding staircase (like I am), for £5 you can go all the way up the tower of St Mary’s Church and take in the stunning views!
The Radcliffe Camera itself houses a part of the Bodleian Library, and also functions as a reading room. Non students or non Library card holders can only visit if you book the 90 minute tour offered by the Bodleian. Which due to Covid restrictions may not be available.(it wasn’t when I visited)
Side-note: those 18th century cobblestones are gorgeous! But What the Heck were they thinking… be prepared is all I can say! Try the pavement or walk on the middle strokes if you can, because I tripped soooo many times. I felt less bad after re-watching the episode, because even Goodey tripped just for a split second and I don’t blame him!

“Distance travelled: 3.25 miles Salmon sandwich trip tally: 11
Day Thirteen was the day I said a fond farewell to Bath and returned to lovely, beloved Oxford. Showered and packed up before breakfast, I lounged around and read and then left PJ at the B&B while I wandered out to see a bit more of Bath since I had plenty of time before my 1:43 train. My first stop was to browse the Roman Baths shop, since it was swarming with people during our visit the other day. After buying a single postcard, I headed to Bath Abbey since I hadn't visited it before and spent about half an hour there before walking back to the Parade Gardens, empty of almost everyone except the gardeners and four ducks (probably the same four ducks from the other day). I then strolled back to and across Pulteney Bridge and along the opposite side of the river and slowly made my way back to the B&B, stopping at the sweet shop around the corner for some sherbet lemons...”

Filming Endeavour in Oxford, Part One
I was walking through Radcliffe Square one day when there appeared before me a shiny, classic bus. And people. Classic people! With a bus! All set out perfectly photogenically, as if to test Dave to see if he's on top of things and carrying his camera today. Well, I am, ha!
And, no, it turns out that this scene was actually laid out for a crew filming the TV series, Endeavour, a frequent sight in Oxford, today using the Radcliffe Camera, the surrounding square, and outer wall of All Souls College as stage setting.
This is so frequent an occurrence, in fact, that there are still more photos to come. Stay tuned ...
