Something I've noticed is that people don't actually like enemies-to-lovers relationships; the thing the majority romanticize are more like rivals-who-trade-moderately-offensive-quips-back-and-forth-until-they-make-out. But when it's actual enemies, as in

I-betrayed-you-a-whole-lot-of-times-and-left-you-to-die-as-you-dangled-over-a-cliff-and-latter-destroyed-the-entire-world-to-make-you-suffer-cause-our-mom-liked-you-better-than-me,

or you-killed-my-brother-so-I'm-going-to-stay-quiet-on-your-true-identity-so-I-can-make-you-suffer-and-maybe-whip-you-a-bit,

or I-though-you-might-be-a-spy-for-the-yukuza-so-I-drugged-you-against-your-will-and-was-just-generally-not-very-nice,

or I-was-raised-in-a-really-bad-racist-household-and-I-wanted-you-to-be-my-friend-but-I-was-showing-off-and-accidentally-made-you-hate-me-and-then-I-was-to-embarrassed-to-apologize-so-I-hated-you-too-and-maybe-kinda-sorta-tried-to-kill-you-once-or-twice-cause-I-was-jealous-of-you-and-your-friends-and-family

and people are saying it's toxic! Like, three out of four of these were during a legit war. THIS is enemies to lovers, where they actually hated each others guts at first and then slowly developed a bond and came to see the other person as a potential ally then maybe a friend and then finally realized their love. THAT'S what enemies to lovers is about.
