Alchemy is the art of harnessing aether and integrating it into conventional sciences; however, even disregarding the scientific factor, understanding how aether and alchemy work requires extensive study and practice. Various materials may contain aether, such as certain alien flora still maintained on Celarys, meteorite ore, and crystals and plants once grown on space stations orbiting the planet in the First Era. Now, with the world in some sort of void, it is becoming harder and harder to obtain these materials... granted, they aren't particularly sought after, given the questionable legal state of alchemy.

Once you've obtained the materials, you have another challenge, though. First and foremost, materials of different types are best used for different purposes. Like others of their kind, quintessant plants have a shelf life once removed from their source of growth. Therefore, they are best used for temporary uses of aether, such as antimagic medicines. Then, we have aether stone, rock, ore, crystal... whatever you want to call it. These can be incorporated for permanent effects. Then, we have the final, most important material for the art - light. The light of stars may be captured, condensed, and subsequently used to engrave intent. For obvious reasons, starlight isn't really a resource you can easily come across on modern Celarys, but, luckily for us, the alchemists of the first era left behind decives able to generate the proper quintessant light, though it may be weaker than true starlight. 

Now that you have your material, the declaration of intent begins. Aether will not necessarily fulfill the purpose you desire unless you command it so. Alchemists use fine, thin starlight lasers to engrave complex, mathematically derived patterns across the material, each stroke holding something of an instruction for it. It is said that the old Celarian alphabet was derived partially from these patterns. Typically, most alchemists start their education as a conventional scientist, then later come to learn and apply alchemy to their particular field of study. In the secretive programs that teach alchemy as a field by itself, students are usually given a surface-level education in each of the natural sciences - chemistry, physics, and biology - and basic skills in some sort of artisan training (though they may choose to pursue any of these to a further extent as well). A larger portion of their learning time is spent understanding the meanings of patterns, forms, materials, and their relationship to aether. Alchemy is noted to be particularly hard to really "master," which mostly consists of knowing how to best utilize materials.
