This is an ARC (advance reading copy) of my book! It is the uncorrected manuscript that has not yet gone through the final stage of copyediting (by a professional copyeditor/proofreader). They are used internally by the publisher for sales purposes and have been sent out to other authors to see if they are open to “blurbing” my book. (Blurbs are the quotes you see on book jackets from other authors who have read and are recommending your book.) I am reviewing those final copyedits this weekend - see Video 2 - due on Monday. (The work I’m currently procrastinating from doing as I post this). Once the final copyedits are in they will pick the font and “typeset the pages” (which used to be done by hand, but is now completely digital), and the final cover is selected (not by me, authors rarely get cover approval) the publisher will print galleys which are fancy ARCs that will be used for marketing and publicity, reviews and pre-sales to booksellers. (This final copy will be going out to my foreign publishers as well who have to do all this as well as translate it!) Yeah, publishing a book is a very long and involved process that involves the hard work and talent of many people. To put it perspective the schedule of Anna K (which has been a faster process than most): sold manuscript to Flatiron Books September 27, 2018. Two rounds of edits and cuts by my two very talented editors which I had to then go through, think about, rewrite, revise... saying goodbye to chapters and writing a few new ones. (November ‘18- April ‘19) and now we’re at the last stage... (well for me, which is the author’s copyedit review). Oh, actually, I still have to write my acknowledgements where I thank the many people who helped me along the way.
