We sought out Desperately Seeking Adventure's Helen Stoker to ask her some questions
Not only does Desperately Seeking Adventure always make us smile as it makes us think of Madonna rock climbing, it also brings together women from all over the country who love spending time outside. We spoke to its founder Helen Stoker to find out more:
How did Desperately Seeking Adventure come about?
I set up Desperately Seeking Adventure in 2012 having worked on the business idea for about 2 years previously. Loving the outdoors and adventures, I was aware of a lack of opportunity for women to get involved in the outdoors if it's something they haven't necessarily tried before, and are slightly anxious/self-concious. I love the outdoors and am fortunate now to have a group of friends who also love the outdoors, but I wanted to give other women the opportunity to get involved too, and feel the benefits of adventure!
What are your plans for the coming year?
This year I plan to grow the business steadily, offering UK weekend adventures, walks and a few European holidays, whilst having lots of fun an adventure myself!
What can we expect to see you from in the future?
More adventures, more European and North African trekking/adventure holidays and eventually world wide adventures on offer.
What has been your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge in terms of the business has been making a commitment to focus on the day to day running of the business and not just run away with the excitement of the adventure. It's easy to enjoy the exciting parts of the business such as meeting new groups, weekend adventures and having fun, but it's also important to spend time on the minor, less exciting aspects that bring the business together, I'm learning to enjoy both!
What was your best adventure?
So far it has to be my time spent trekking in the Himalayas - such a fantastic, inspirational place with so much beauty, the people are friendly and so humble, and the mountains and landscape is vast, I'd definitely like to be able to take groups out there eventually so other women can enjoy the experience.
What is the one adventure you wish to take but havent yet taken?
I's love to spend some time trekking in South America and see little known places, off the beaten track, and experience the different cultures and climates - it's on the list!!
We love the site & the fact that it is also breaking down barriers that might prevent women from participating. Thats what Adventurely are also striving to do. We have signed up to do one of the free walks with Desperately Seeking Adventure in April so maybe we will see you there. You can check them out here.
