Remember the Alamo!
Religion may/may not be the central cause for our biggest problems, but it is almost always in the background. Over the past 72hrs it has already become more than apparent that women and girls are among the first groups left vulnerable to death by the Islamic Fundamentalists (Taliban) takeover and fall of Afghanistan. The Council on Foreign Relations reports today “what will happen to Afghanistan’s democratic institutions and constitution, and how women’s, LGBTQ+ individuals’, and religious minority groups’ rights will be protected” is yet unresolved. NBC News reports that the Taliban has begun sweeping through cities and towns defacing advertisements and public images with women deemed to be “sexually suggestive”. Yesterday’s scenes at Kabul’s International airport show a highly over-represented male population desperately trying to board military and charter flights, reportedly because women cannot leave their children behind to run after airplanes on the tarmac (if they can leave their homes to begin with).
All this, juxtaposed against our own home-grown fundamentalists (i.e. the American Religious Right) campaigning for “Freedom” and weaponizing ideas like “God, Guns, Grits and Gravy” to justify millions of deaths and generations of US Middle-East presence for 40+ years. This posture has been an extension of “American Exceptionalism”, “Divine Right” and the impulse behind a former pious US Presidential candidate who admittedly wanted “carpet bomb” Islamic militants and find out whether “sand can glow in the dark.“
At least two things can be argued:
(1) Religious fundamentalism of any kind *always* seeks to target women first.
-and-
(2) The real threat of religion, gods and unproven beliefs only begin when you start taking it seriously.
