The African Association of Madison and its partners will co-sponsor and produce Africa Fest 2011 on Saturday, Aug. 20 at Warner Park, located on Madison's north side....
The 13th annual AfricaFest is a chance to educate and showcase to the community the kaleidoscope of African cultures and values through dance, music, art, and foods. Anyone interested in learning about the rich cultures of Africa from Africans will want to attend this annual event.
“The whole idea is for the community to learn more about African culture,” says Aggo Akyea, president of the African Association of Madison (AAM). “We are a very diverse continent that is very rich in culture and tradition.”
Africa Fest is a community-based cultural and educational event devoted to grassroots cultural heritage. The festival is free and open to the public and features a diverse audience of children, students, members of academia, and the news media, arts enthusiasts, and other members of the Madison community.
Among the many events that will take place at AfricaFest, there will be cooking demonstrations, craft and fashion vendors, food vendors, exhibits about Africa, hair-braiding demonstrations, and performances by the Jam ak Jam Dance Troupe from Milwaukee, traditional dances from Madison's African community, and the traditional African Apparel Fashion Parade.
