There was a time in my life that I was was working with a lot musicians from the African continent. We had a lot of adventures on the road and I got to see parts of the world only few get to experience. This photo was taken in 1999 when I was producing the #AfricaFete tour. In this photo we find #BassekouKouyate (#Ngoni) on the far left, the legendary #TajMahal holding his steel guitar, which he gave at the end of the tour to the incredible Malian vocalist Kasse-Mady Diabate who is seated on the far right. Smiling with his hands on my back was my road buddy, the master kora player, Mr. @toumanidiabatemusic. We had some good vibes with the #Kulanjan crew. I remember on many afternoons over our 30-date tour bringing my prayer mat to Toumani’s room where I would join the band, members of Baaba Maal’s band and other #Muslims on the tour for afternoon prayers. It was certainly the biggest African tour during it’s time, with 56-people on the road, four tour buses, a truck loaded with gear, and #AmericanExpress & The #KennedyCenter supporting the tour. It is rare to hear of any tour in the US with #Africanmusicians gain the kind of funding this tour received. These were really good days.
