It can be quite surprising to find toads in deserts- especially when there’s miles of boiling sand separating them from other toads. The presence of toads, like this African toad [Sclerophrys regularis], has long baffled researchers in Qatar, a desert country that frequently exceeds 100 °F and is one of the only on Earth with no natural, permanent source of freshwater. However, populations of toads have persisted, with multiple theories to their origins. African toads may have been released accidentally in Qatar alongside cargo from Egypt, or may have been spread alongside soil and plants from different farms. Whatever their origin, these toads are recent arrivals, and are thriving in isolated areas, their expansion prevented only by the desert heat. You can read more about their proposed origins in this article. Images by John White.
