ACS

First of all I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Peace, 100%, not a lie, my parents bestowed upon me ‘Peace’ as a name. To be fair, I am African so it’s not a really a surprise that I have a ‘not usual’ name. 

Question. I titled this post ‘ACS’  and hopefully to some people the acronym is a familiar one. Understandably if it isn’t, so let me explain. ACS stands for African Caribbean Society. Let me explain further what this post and blog is about.

September of 2017, I started my a-levels at a new school, it was an opportunity for me to branch out of my comfort zone and to do the subjects that I wanted. See the country I live in is over 90% white, therefore growing up I didn’t really go to school with more than three other black people (other than my own sister). This new school is way more diverse and the people I spend most of my time around can relate to my daily experiences, who doesn’t love being able to relate to those? Obviously one day I carpe diem-ed and took advantage of this. My best friends and I sat down and decided, ‘let’s start an ACS at our school’. So we did. Well we are. It’s quite a long process to be honest but we’re getting there.

This blog is simply to document our experiences, to help others who want to start a society of their own. It is not a ‘black society’, obviously the marjority of Africans and Caribbeans are black but it is a place for all to learn about our differences and experiences. Our aim to create a safer community within our school and hopefully when I’ve left school, it will continue and will be stronger than ever.
