Oyasumi Punpun: The Afro God
As a child, punpun believed that if he chanted ‘dear God, dear God, tinkle tinkle hoy!’ the face of a bearded man with an afro and glasses would appear. He is usually depicted with a smile on his face, but he can have other emotions, such as shock, shown. This God doesn’t act like a God in any way, but he does tell Punpun to do wrong actions. He has a naked male body that sometimes appears, too.
This God was introduced by Uncle Yuuichi, who learnt about the chant from a schoolgirl named Yagi, although Yuuichi states himself that he doesn’t believe in God. Only Punpun can see this God, who, in the end, is shown to be a manifestation of the evil thoughts Punpun has. Nearing the end of the manga, Punpun tries to remove this God who appears in his left eye (the left hand side symbolises impurity and sin) and violently stabs said eye.
Sometimes the chant is shortened by leaving only a single ‘tinkle’. The chant is the title of an old song by The Lion & The Sloth, which most likely would have been intentional. Pegasus believed that this God was directly related to the ‘dark spot’ and that it is manifested inside everyone, proving further that this God is a manifestation of dark thoughts. An example is where this God appears when Wada betrays Pegasus.
This God, as soon as Punpun stabs his eye, passes onto Yuuichi and Midori’s newborn child, Soara, symbolising that one cannot be rid of darkness and that history repeats itself. This theme is seen further when Punpun and Aiko’s relationship is mirrored by two children in Harumi’s class, which may turn out the same.
It was not good seeing Afro God during Punpun's adulthood
