Shout out to @restauranteafrogourmet in Rio, Brazil for hosting us today. It's harder than you would think to find Black-owned restaurants in Brazil, but this one is simply amazing. The owner is a former B-boy and runs the place with his wife and family. Oh, and the food was amazing!! Pt1 I Am the Future Last night was heart was full moved to tears & given confirmation im/we are on the right path. Dr. Ash Lynch Curator of Alt(e)r Call: No church in the wild. Answerings the question: Who is included your freedom dreams? Ash told me my work & the work of the other artist saved his life. When he pitched this dissertation for his phd people werent getting it. Our work was a roadmap for freedom. We were out here working to liberate everyone with our work/vulnerability/power/artistry/mastery/spirit. He wants folks to see our value & have it upheld. He wants us taught as part of the canon in academia. Ash been following my work since Trans Lives Matter! Justice for Islan Nettles. My work/our work allowed him to see a way to come out & be himself. As he's moved to tears im honored & loved up by his words. As Adejoke stated its about elevating & honoring people. Nyc we dont honor each other enough. We dont tell each other now how we appreciate & love each other especially when it comes to our work. Nyc were too hard on each other. You forget in the mist of survival & making work on the side because it nourishes you however you gotta make that bread. Hearing other community members come up to I Am! We Are Here! Stating they love the vitality of it, the aliveness & power. That they were drawn & moved. Feeling honored & also at ease. Then noticing the altar & understanding innately why they were drawn to these beautiful spirits being out alive & joyful. Ash & the staff at WPA purposefully put my work/our work at the entrance of the exhibition. As they were setting up in this gallery space it transformed the space & the altar elevated it and people felt at home. Installing the work, people would stop on the block to look in & be present to what was occuring. People would walk in and ask what was this & what's happening. Im grateful to my collaborators for staying yes & creating this with me.
