English News and Press Release on Colombia about Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding and Protection and Human Rights; published on 13 Aug 2020 by WOLA
Five kids aged 14 to 16 years old were found dead in the poor neighborhood of Llano Verde, in Cali, Colombia, this past Tuesday (August 11th). It is suspected that the kids were murdered because they refused to be recruited into gangs. The massacre has caused a lot of sadness in the Afro-Colombian community and beyond. Another horrible act of violence occurred yesterday (August 13th), during the funeral service that was held in honor of the victims, a grenade exploded and left one dead and 15 injured. All of this happened in a neighborhood populated mostly by families that arrived recently to Cali from rural parts of the country that they had to escape because of the armed conflict. After being displaced by violence from their territories, forced to leave under the threats of paramilitary groups, they arrived to the city only to live in neighborhoods where they are exposed to more poverty and violence... But do Black Lives Matter outside of the US? Please say their names... Juan Manuel Montaño, 15 years old. Jean Paul Perlaza, 15 years old. Leyder Cardenas, 15 years old. Alvaro Jose Caicedo, 14 years old. Jair Andres Cortez, 14 years old.
