Lollipop Kids #1 - Aftershock Comics
By Adam Glass, Aiden Glass & Diego Yapur
When immigrants come to new countries, they bring their culture with them, the good and the bad. The natives get the benefit of new beliefs, new food, new ideas, new religion and just new people. The immigrants get the benefit of a place to hide (or dump) their monsters. This is what Lollipop Kids is about.
With every monster story, you need a monster hunter. Little Red Riding Hood, Frankenstein, werewolves, and Dracula are all monster stories and all have a hunter whose sole purpose is to stop that one monster. The monsters exist in this comic, but not these heroes. Instead, we have a gang of children, known as the Lollipop Kids, who hunt these monsters down and defend locals from their ravages. They are descendants of families of monster hunters, and train vigorously to bring down the things that go bump in the night. Now, in issue #1, they get a new member: an anonymous half-Black, half-Irish kid with dyslexia who grew up right next to Central Park. He has a sister, his dad is a firefighter, and his mother died during a mugging. This kid is smart, and is apparently descended from two of the original monster hunting families.
The creative team is interesting too. Adam and Aiden Glass are a father/son duo who co-created this book. Adam has an extensive history with TV and comics, and Aiden is a “newly minted high school freshman.” How cool that this kiddo created this character and this story with his father. What a great start to a career for him. The artist, Diego Yapur, is from Argentina and has a fantastic style. The action is dynamic, and he uses a lot of angles. Hopefully his non-American eye will add an edge to the art to reflect a varied experience. The other two members of the team - DC Alonso and Sal Cipriano - really cap off an incredibly talented and experienced team. AfterShock is a small publisher, and many of these creators come from an impressive pedigree of stories and experience.
Can’t wait for issue two!
