There is something about watching Moreau tear himself apart that makes him afraid. Andrew is both the child version of himself that prays that for a night, just for one night, his bedroom door will stay closed, and the adult left alone on the pavement staring at the pitiful abandoned remnants of Neil Josten’s life. Both are too vulnerable for California streets and so Andrew shoves them down with revulsion, threading his fingers through Moreau’s hair to force his head up and examine the gouges of his throat with a clinical disinterest. History sounds too close to misunderstanding for him to find any true detachment. “Did Johnson ever touch Neil?”
Or: When Andrew asks Jean if Grayson ever touched Neil, he has a different answer.

Prologue Pt.1 - First They Burned Him
It starts with red. The red of his father’s hair as it sticks with sweat to his forehead and turns a rusted shade matching the blood dripping from his knuckles. The red of Lola’s lipstick twists into a smile as she slides the knife home between the ribs over and over again. The red of his mother’s blood pouring from her body as they tear her apart piece by piece and laugh while Romero holds him down, forcing him to watch.
It’s all so red that he feels like he will drown in it — that he already is drowning and choking on his mother’s screams. Because in the end this is his fault.

seeing the andreil height difference in the rainbow crate editions of the books is strangely vindicating, and whilst it now begs the question: so has Neil been made shorter than the og or Andrew taller? I hope you all know that when it comes to my fic Andrew is in fact two inches taller than he is in canon
