Black-tailed bumblebee (Bombus melanopygus) on anise hyssop (Agastache foeniculum). A rare visit to my garden by this species, which in urban areas and the mountains can be quite common but is mostly absent from my rural lowland habitat. Superbly beautiful bees. Orange Sulpher Butterfly on Anise Hyssop. Both of these species are native to North America. The Orange Sulphur caterpillar feeds on Alfalfa and other legumes. Anise Hyssop draw the bees and butterflies in droves, and it draws me too. I love the taste of the leaf while I’m passing by, and I love the soothing sweet flavor of the leaf in tea. Once my partner Chris gave me some before speaking at a March Against Monsanto rally, and I’ve used it many times since to ground me and give power to my throat when speaking or singing. The tea helps with congestion, coughs, fevers, and diarrhea. It is a drought tolerant mint native to the northern parties of North America. These Seedlings came up this week in my hoop house where I had been drying the seed crop.
