“JUST A MINUTE” you yell at the door, kind of pleased that you’re the one making her wait for a change, but also hurrying so she doesn’t leave you again.
Pathetic, you mentally curse yourself for already projecting your abandonment issues onto her.
And then you glance at yourself in the mirror and your guessing was right, you do look like shit.
“Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck” it’s all you can repeat to yourself as you start to run around the room deciding what to do first… put on some clothes, pee, fix your hair, wash your face, brush your teeth, pick up the clothes scattered around the room UGH!
After a couple of minutes you resemble a human being again, and you make your way to the door hoping she does all the talking, because you don’t really know what will get out of your mouth once you open it: words, angry crying or even vomit.
But when you open the door you feel your heart dropping all the way to your feet. She really is there, standing as gorgeous as ever with that smile that makes you lose your ability to think for a few heartbeats.
She’s in the same outfit as last night, but this time holding her light blue blazer in her arms. The ponytail is looser, and she also looks tired as hell, which makes you feel slightly better.
Deep down, you wish she had a lousy night for bailing on you yesterday.
“Did I wake you, hon?”, she asks as if the fact that you took a few minutes to appear wasn’t enough as an answer. But you just stare back, still unsure if you should open your mouth.
Since you don’t reply, she adds “You look like you had a rough night… but I bet mine was worse”.
“Good" is all that you can mumble, but this time you’re sure she caught your answer, from the surprised look on her face.
“Look, I know you must be angry about last night but you must understand—“
“Oh that doesn’t even begin to cover it” you’re finally able to speak. “I don’t really mind if you were dealing with work stuff or whatever. Not that I really care, since I just met you yesterday, but I’ve been waiting for this trip for a long time, I’ve poured my blood and sweat to afford this and you leave me there like an idiot waiting for you when I could be doing absolutely anything else then looking like a fool?”.
You barely breathe before continuing, making sure to get it off your chest before the tears start creeping up.
“Just for what? You appear as if nothing happened this morning, probably after spending a lovely night with the woman from the bar, doing whatever you do and laughing about the silly girl who spent hours checking her phone waiting for you”.
Wow, you didn’t know you had this in you. You might regret lashing out like this later, but she did deceive you, so.
“Are you done?” she asks calmly, which is even more infuriating.
You just stare back at her, fuming.
“Okay, can I please take you to breakfast so we can talk? Or are you going to throw pancakes at me, too?” And the smooth smile on her face almost makes you wish you weren’t so hard on her.
But you’ve also made a promise to yourself not to be so soft anymore. So you just raise an eyebrow at her, close your door and start walking down the corridor defiantly, waiting for her to follow.
A few steps in and you notice you don’t hear the clink of her heels behind you. So you stop and take a deep breath before turning back to see what is taking her so long.
The look on her face… Fuck, that’s hot. You wish you could frame it.
She was staring as if it was the funniest and yet most delicious thing she’s ever watched. Once more she was doing that thing of pressing her tongue against the inside of her cheek while grinning and it was extremely hard keeping serious.
“What?” you shoot at her. “Bailing already?”
Nailed it, you think to yourself.
“I was actually enjoying the view…” she keeps on grinning "but I’ve got a better idea to try and make it up to you, if you’d let me.”
And of course you do. Pathological people pleaser, you mentally curse yourself.
And of course you will follow her like a lost puppy.
And of course she enjoys it way too much.
She turns around and starts walking in the opposite direction, going somewhere you haven’t had the chance to explore yet. And you don’t even think twice before following her.
Ugh, so much for not being soft.
You don’t say a word to each other while walking through the hotel. She’s always a couple of steps ahead of you, as if making sure you knew who was in charge after your little show.
And you follow her.
A few more steps and she comes to a halt at a seemingly common storage door. After a few seconds searching her pockets, she slides a tag on a small black device and you can’t believe your eyes when the door opens.
The view was so breathtaking you even managed to stop looking at Agatha for a while.
You were standing at a secluded terrace on top of a cliff, with an amazing steep rock wall rising a few more meters to your right, while the ocean stretched in front of you and all the way to your left.
From the corner you could see the view from the pool, a few stories down, but it was nothing compared to this.
Islands and rocks rose from the green-blue sea making an unbelievable sight, and you can’t help the loud “Holy shit” that left your mouth.
For a minute you forgot she was there, and the delight on her face when you look back is just indescribable. It takes you another amount of heartbeats to remember why you were so pissed at her.
And as soon as you start “Don't think this chang—“ she just turns you back around to face the one thing you haven’t noticed until now: a full breakfast table right on the corner, facing the whole view.
Wow, she really outdid herself. You got to give her that.
There was just you and her and that infinite view… how could you complain now? Fuck, that’s romantic, you can’t help but think.
“Doesn't it?” she asks, with a smug smile on her face. And you just can’t answer.
All you can do now is sit down on the chair she’s pulling for you, and watch as she sits by your side, never taking her eyes off your dumbfounded face.
You both stay like that for a moment, not even sure if it was one minute or ten. A napkin in front of you never seemed so interesting as now, making you avoid looking at her while she stared at you.
Neither one of you dared to break the silence until a seagull tried to snatch a piece of bread from the table and both of you jumped off your chairs, snorting and cackling.
“Well, that was unexpected”, she finally says, pulling her blazer from the floor.
“Yeah… That and all of this, too”, you blush, pointing at the table not even sure where to begin. “How were you so sure I’d follow you up here?” was the first question that popped out.
“I wasn’t, but I couldn’t lose hope, could I?”, she throws her hair back before continuing.
“It’s my way of apologizing to you, sweetheart” Agatha says, reaching for your hand and making you clench your whole body. “I know you’ve spent too much to be here. I know this is an important moment in your life. I know there was more you could be doing last night than waiting for me.”
“And I’m truly sorry. That’s why I brought you some place no other guest gets to see”, she finishes, squeezing your hand.
You look at her not able to reply, still unsure how to handle these feelings. And it’s also a little weird that she seems to know a bit too much about you, but you shut this thought for now. So you go for the next question on your mind “What about Rio?”.
“Hahahahah you really are a thorough and curious one, aren’t you?” She stares at you for a while, clearly thinking of the best way to answer. “Rio and I have a history, if that’s what you want to know”.
“History?” you hint her to continue.
“Yes, history. Meaning we were together for a long time, it ended, but now we found a way to work together peacefully. But we still care for each other, hence the pet names you may have heard”.
She waits for your reply, that doesn’t come. So she makes the next move, asking the question you didn’t want her to ask: “Why does it matter if I’m with Rio or not?”
Fuck, she’s playing you. She knows.
You do your best to keep on staring deep into her eyes. You can’t let her see you falter now, even when you’re already blushing like crazy.
So you buy yourself some time, taking a sip from the Mimosa in front of you and hoping the alcohol goes up to your brain quickly enough.
“I don’t wanna feel how I did last night”, you reply evasively.
“How did you feel?” she shoots back.
And you can’t hold it in. “Honestly? I felt like shit. I felt like you were playing me. I felt like you made me feel special inviting me to dinner after giving me a huge room upgrade, just to leave me hanging there like an idiot.”
“I didn’t mean to leave you waiting, baby. I thought you knew that by now. I had to work, I’ve spent the whole night working and the first thing I did after a quick nap was coming to find you”.
And now you’re feeling bold, so you dare to ask “And why are you so interested in me? Why all of this? Why trying to make it up to me?”
“Why indeed. I mean—“ she starts, and as if it was rehearsed or requested, the door behind you slams open, letting a black haired young man in carrying a tray on his hands.
“Billy, right on time!” Agatha smiles at him and points at you “Say ‘hi’ to our guest, pet”, to which he weirdly nods and mumbles "Hi" while setting one big covered plate in front of the both of you.
“His mother went MIA a few years ago and I took him under my wings here. Still a lot to learn, but he’s useful. Got potential and always has my back”, she explains, patting his back and pointing to the door to let him know he could leave.
She uncovers the plate, and your mouth waters at the sight of the croissants, crepes, toasts, breads and pastries. She was really trying hard, you think.
“Why are you trying this hard? I asked you and you never answered me” you insist.
“Hmmm" her eyes feel like fire burning your skin harder than the sun. “I guess we might find that out in a while. For now, eat.”
“What?!” You try to question, but she just repeats: “Eat."
Her words seemed final, and you didn’t dare defy. Not now, at least. And the food in front of you was too tempting not to eat, so you settle for the teasing, for now.
The food was absurdly good. You wonder how you’ll ever be able to go back to those same old artificial flavors from back home. Everything seemed to melt in your mouth and play with your senses, and you can see they were handmade.
The both of you sat eating in almost complete silence, only breaking it to make small comments about the feast, the weather and other minor resort related subjects.
Once you were so full you couldn’t even think of eating anymore, the sun was already almost at peak.
Agatha notices it too, and says “I don’t want you wasting any more time now. Go, enjoy the hotel, enjoy your day. We’ll see each other later”.
“Should I wait for you somewhere specific?” You ask teasingly.
She scoffs “No, doll. As I said, we will see each other. You enjoy your day and let me worry about that”, then she cups your chin and gives a slight pat on your cheek before turning around and leaving.
What the f…?
“Hey, hold up!” You get up to run after her, in a sudden rush of boldness, although you’re not entirely sure yet what you’re going to say yet. You reach for her hand and pull her just before she opens the door, which leaves her stranded.
You didn't expect to be so close to her, but you couldn’t take a step back now. There wasn't even a foot between you, so you just follow your instinct.
Still holding her right hand, you get on the tip of your toes — now noticing she’s a little taller than you — and whisper a soft “Thank you for breakfast… and everything else” in her ear, before leaning to kiss her cheek slowly.
Whatever got into you when you pulled her in, you certainly didn’t expect to feel her left hand gripping your waist.
She sets her right hand free from yours to hold the back of your head, and you suddenly forget how to breathe, feeling only her warm breath hitting your face.
Her smell is absolutely intoxicating in a way that numbs all your other senses, and all you can hear is the beating of your heart inside your head.
You feel your vision get blurry once she leans in, so you just close your eyes and wait to feel her lips against yours.
But then you don’t.
You feel her grip on your hair tighten, tilting your head to the side, and suddenly her warm breath is no longer on your face, but on your neck.
You can’t help a soft whimper leaving your mouth, and immediately you feel her laughing against your skin, apparently enjoying the effect she has on you a bit too much.
She takes a deep breath against you and her lips finally touch the inside of your neck, and you do your best to make your legs hold on a little longer and not give in just yet.
The shock wave it sends through your body is something else entirely, and it’s another struggle inside your mind not to jump onto her lap just yet.
Her kiss on your neck last for a few heartbeats, sending sparks directly to your lower stomach, and you could swear there’s already a pool in between your legs.
But then her lips leave your skin, and you think you’re already missing it when you feel her against your ear, in a whisper that makes every single hair on your body lift “See you later, babygirl”.
And this time you don’t recover quickly enough to go after her.
Fuck, it definitely was not only inside your mind.
***
You try to go on with your day.
The first thing you do after coming down from the terrace and from that high was to find something to get your mind off of her, so you book yourself a ride to watch the sunset on the top of a cliff, a few miles away from the hotel.
It’s said to have the best view of the island, so it must be worth it.
There were still a few hours to go until then, so you spend it lounging by the pool, sipping drinks and coming in and out of the sea.
At all times you kept on involuntarily looking for her through the hotel, but you should know better that she wouldn’t hang around after spending the whole night working. But you can’t help yourself.
In the middle of the afternoon you go to the pool bar to look for something to eat, and for another cocktail, when a familiar voice rings on your ears.
“Hey, Limoncello! How are you doing today?” Rio asks, with that mischievous look on her face.
“Hahaha now I got a nickname? Or do all the guests get one” you reply, playing along.
“Only the special ones. But I’m glad to see you out of that restaurant, in the daylight" she shoots back, laughing.
“Yeah well, I didn’t come all this way to Italy to be locked inside a room”, you say, taking a few moments to realize the unintentional double meaning of your reply.
You hope she didn’t catch it, but by the grin on her face and her tilting head say she surely did.
So you pretend nothing happened, and ask her for a shot of flavored vodka. “No Limoncello this time?” Rio asks, and you shrug as you answer “Ugh no, after last night, I think I’ll need some time before taking it again”.
The next hour or so flies through you, while you watch the view and talk to her about the island, lost in conversation. It was nice, easy, and she made you feel comfortable, much unlike Agatha, that always kept you on edge.
When your alarm rings on your phone, your mind was so far away that you jump, making you splash your drink and Rio cackle at your face. You mumble some curse, throw an olive at her and get up to leave, not before thanking her for the company.
You arrive at the reception, meeting a small group of people already boarding a van towards the cliff. You’re glad you don’t know anyone there and can keep quiet for a change, after spending a huge part of your day talking.
The view from the cliff was absolutely astonishing. By the time you arrive, the salty breeze was soft and the sky was already orange, so you could see the sun painting the hotel and the cliffs in shades of orange and gold.
You find yourself a nice spot to sit, and you look at the other guests settling in for the spectacle. Most of them were couples, and there was a part of you that wished Agatha was there with you.
Ugh, softie. One day in and you’re already this fucked up for her? You scold at yourself, shaking your head.
To try and keep her out of your head, you pull your AirPods, turn up some music and focus on the waves crashing down at the big stonewalls.
The soft beat was doing wonders added to the soft buzz of the leftover alcohol from your time with Rio. You think you must’ve taken around 4 or 5 shots, and they were hitting at the best possible time.
On this moment you’re immensely grateful to be living this experience. Happiness fills your whole being, and you feel absolutely free and light. Exactly what you expected from this trip.
When the sun is finally set, people start getting up and you follow along, being one of the last ones to catch the ride back to the hotel.
Once you arrive, you decide to go straight to your room to take a nice bath before going to dinner.
You fill your bathtub, add some nice salts and dip in feeling like royalty. You keep your songs playing through your phone’s speaker and just enjoy this moment.
What a day, you think to yourself. The water of the bathtub was just perfect, and you just decide to leave when your stomach starts rumbling again.
Now, all that’s left is a nice meal and you can call it a night.
You don’t intend on staying late today, so you can get up earlier tomorrow and enjoy a nice stroll on the beach before it gets too hot.
So you go down to the restaurant and order the Shrimp Scampi you denied yourself last night.
When it arrives and you try it, you almost wish you hadn’t ordered it. How will you ever cook this back at home after eating this???
Oh well…
After an unforgettable dinner and a perfect Tiramisu, you absentmindedly make your way back to your quarters, completely forgetting that Agatha said she’d meet you… until you open the door to your room and find her leaning against your balcony.
