Listen I don’t understand the science of this but here’s a weird thing about apples: if an apple tree drops fruit that seeds a new tree, the new tree’s fruit will be completely different from its parent tree. Every single naturally-grown apple tree will generate different fruit from its progenitor and, as I understand it, from all other apple trees.

Every single popular apple cultivar is grown from grafting. As I understand it every Granny Smith apple tree is more or less a clone grafted from another Granny Smith tree.

In areas with heavy apple cultivation, such as the NE of the USA and SE of Canada, feral apples are a thing. Previously cultivated orchards that have been left untended for years or decades will drop seeds that sprout new trees and therefore wholly new kinds of apples. And seeds from orchards can be distributed naturally (wind, animal transport, etc) into adjacent natural spaces and grow into trees there. Every single feral apple tree grows its own distinct fruit. And in those places, some people will forage for those feral apples. Very few are good to eat raw, but they can be cooked or made into cider. There are growing numbers of indie cideries in Vermont, upstate NY, southern Quebec etc that make their cider from feral apples, and because of the literally unlimited diversity of feral apple trees, the appeal of those cideries is often the diversity and unpredictability of their flavours.

I am a survivor of the Pulse nightclub shooting, having grown up in Orlando and just turned 20 a month prior. If you didn’t know, there were several families who refused to claim the bodies of their relatives due to their sexuality. One family even had their relative’s name removed from the memorial. Murdered by the same hate with which their families reject them in both life and death.

Many, many people celebrated Pulse. We were told we deserved it. That it was God’s punishment for our sin of loving the same sex. We are sent messages like these I received in 2018:

We in the community often call the victim count 49+ to include the survivors who couldn’t live with the pain.

The event was never officially declared a hate crime or targeted homophobic attack and is rarely listed as one in databases.

At our vigils for those slaughtered, Extremist Christian groups showed up to protest, holding signs like this:

Please understand how much more than just a mass shooting this was. We are still to this day harassed and told we deserved it by some.

This year was the sixth anniversary. The first couple years I received dozens of messages checking in on me on 6/12. Year 5 got enough news coverage for people to think to reach out to me. This year it was my therapist, the woman I kissed in that photo, and a couple of other gun violence survivor friends. People are forgetting already.

Doing Better does not always mean never being upset or never being triggered or never having trouble. often Doing Better means experiencing those things and being able to keep going/cope healthily/move on. if you’re in a bubble with no sensation, if you’re numbing yourself out, that’s not what recovering really is. it won’t help you have a happier life it’ll just make your world smaller and smaller until you can’t fit anywhere anymore. gotta learn to make peace with the hard stuff too, that’s the only way to keep going
