Charles could tell something was bothering you when he saw you sitting by the window sill. You lowered your arm, your phone tightly gripping in your hand, and Charles could tell you were just in the middle of a call. You took a deep breath, with tears in your eyes, but Charles could tell you were trying your best to put on a brave face. Out of courtesy, he decided not to read your mind, instead asking, “What’s bothering you, y/n?”
You looked up, slightly startled by Charles’ voice before waving your hands. “Oh, it’s nothing.”
Moving closer to you, Charles insisted, “You shouldn’t invalidate your feelings. It’s clearly something, seeing as you’re distressed.”
“I just...” you trailed off, gripping the phone before sighing. “My boyfriend and I broke up recently, and I need to move my stuff out of his apartment. He just called to let me know I can come by this afternoon.”
Charles gazed at you sympathetically, reaching out to reassuringly squeeze your hand. He knew you and your boyfriend had been together for some time, and it came as a surprise to him to hear that the two of you were no longer together. “I’m sorry to hear that. It must be hard.”
“I guess it wasn’t mean to be.” you flashed Charles a weak smile. “Things just fell apart between us, he got nastier...”
Charles tensed up at the thought of someone mistreating you. You were a good, kind person, and you didn’t deserve any sort of cruelty. He listened intently as you continued, “I’m going to have to face him today when I pick up my stuff.”
You ran your hands through your hair before timidly asking, “I know it’s silly, but... but will you go with me, Charles? I just... I don’t want to face him alone-”
“Don’t be ridiculous, of course I’m going with you.” Charles smiled at you warmly, and you smiled back at him. “While we’re there, want me to beat him up for you?”
“Charles!” you gaped at him, surprised at his sudden outburst of anger. Charles chuckled slightly as you added, “As tempting as the offer is, I think I’d rather spent time trying to move on.”
“That’s a wise decision.” Charles replied. Suddenly feeling bashful, he added, “Someone better will come along, I promise you. Someone who treats you right.”
“I hope so.” you sighed, unaware that Charles was secretly referring to himself.
