On the occasion of the honorary Palme d'Or to Robert de Niro, I am posting portraits and snapshots from Cannes in 1984 and 1993
In 1984, I was anxiously waiting for him to appear at the press conference for the now legendary work, by @sergioleone ''Once upon a time in America'' where he starred.
Oh my!, I remember Daniel Angeli, the famous paparazzo, who said ''I want him here''! De Niro preferred to be photographed en prive at the iconic Hotel du Cap-Eden Rock in Cap d'Antibes on behalf of Sygma Press!
And yet! At the premiere of the film, he appeared alongside Sergio Leone despite the pouring rain.
Then I was able to realize his first portrait "en volee" and the emblematic photos of the whole team in the Salle des Ambassadeurs at the Palais des Festivals in front of the coffin cake as a reference to the film work!
The second time was in 1993 when he starred in John McNaughton's Mad Dog and Glory.
At that time, his portrait referred more to himself and not to the event.
However, my favorite portrait will remain the one from 1984, when he crouched down and passed me after the screening of the film…
Let it be… Robert de Niro was, is and will remain a global reference to the 7th Art.
