I believe that everyone should watch a movie considered “classic” or one that is taught in film studies curriculum. I believe everyone should interact with a David Lynch work at least once in their lives. Same goes for Wes Anderson. Hell, even Buster Keaton. I believe that everyone should read House Of Leaves and One Flew. I believe everyone should go to an art gallery, remember a name of a painter and go on a deep dive Google search into their works. If not a painter, an artist of some other medium. I believe everyone should read Maus. Everyone should read Robert Crumb comics. Everyone should listen to Zappa, or The Turtles, or Flo and Eddie, or Captain Beefheart or The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band.
I believe all of these works (and many more) are nourishment for the mind, body and soul. I see too many aspiring artists like me only interacting with contemporary works, and I’m sorry, but that limits you! By looking to the past, you know what inspires the present, and can find something to inspire you! Keep reading, keep watching, keep creating.
