🌳Today is World Senior Citizen Day & National Senior Citizen Day in the US. Since 1988 this day serves to raise awareness about the issues affecting senior citizens. This is important especially because the newly released 2021 Population Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that the populations for most states are getting older overall. 🌳We must honor our “ancianos” and value the contributions they make in their lifetimes. Many are aging powerfully and are pursuing their dreams. From learning new technology to retraining for more fulfilling careers, seniors are no longer staying at home after retirement. 🌳We must vigorously advocate for our seniors especially when they can no longer speak for themselves. Our parents worked a lifetime and paid into the system, so we must let our elected officials know to adequately fund social security, Medicare and other services that needed. 🌳It is also vital that we advocate for excellent care for the elderly in the healthcare system. During the pandemic the neglect occurring in many aging care facilities was exposed as thousands of elderly died from lack of adequate care. Nursing homes continue to be stressed by internal and external forces, however, they must make plans to deal with the shortages in personnel, equipment and materials to care for the elderly in their facilities, or get out of the business. Lack of adequate daily care for an elderly person can exacerbate simple health issues and cause hospitalization. If you have elderly parents please beware of the concerning trend in healthcare that recommends DO NOT RESUSCITATE orders or hospice if they deem your parents do not have good “quality of life.” 🌳Be proactive and join organizations like AARP, that are advocating for the rights of the elderly with our elected officials.
