when she had finally been lucid enough to understand what her mother and javi had been saying to her, kate initially hadn’t believed them. she had screamed and cried and cursed at them both until a nurse had to come in and pump her full of something that made the world turn blurry and DREAMLIKE around its edges. then she had wept into her pillow, whimpering and moaning until sleep finally took her. addy couldn’t have survived. she had heard the CRUNCH of her bones shattering even over the howling wind and sheets of rain. she had felt the tips of their fingers get ripped apart from each other. addy didn’t survive.
it took javi showing her a photo he took of their friend ( it was blurry, his hands must have been shaking ) in her own hospital bed for kate to finally realize. then she had started DEMANDING to see her, frantically. threatened to drag herself to the other girl’s room, and likely in turn destroy the careful stitching and stapling holding the shredded muscle and meat of her thigh together in the process. it took TWO DAYS of that before someone relented and she was wheeled two floors down.
now she sits at her slumbering friend’s bedside, practically curling herself over top her smaller form, ignoring the way her leg screams in protest even through the haze of morphine. her dark, dark eyes take everything in - every bruise and contusion. the tape around her fingers. the horrifyingly empty space where her foot should be. everything that wouldn’t have happened if kate had been fast enough to grab her, strong enough to hold on. if she hadn’t led them out into the storm in the first place, for her own stupid greed and ideas.
there are tears dripping down onto addy’s face, kate tries to gently brush them away with trembling hands, only for more to join them. she’s leaned so close that they’re practically nose to nose, and it takes her a moment to realize that addy has shifted until their foreheads touch. kate sucks in a shuddering breath, sudden and sharp like a sob. “ addy, addy. ”
