take a minute to appreciate my girl ahki.
when she was born her father was disappointed hoping to have a son to carry on his business. Even though he had a son he still loved Ahki and was generally conteny with having a girl.
3 years later she's getting a sibling. a boy. of course her father is all a flutter about this, so much so that ahki really isn't in the picture that much. ahki isn't really upset, at least not as much as a 3 year old would be. she has her mother and that's where she's the happiest. a few months go by and the passing away of her mother has rocked the entire family.
her father succombing to alcohol as his coping method and thus loosing most of the money and his bussiness. they live like this for years. during this time her father is always passed out, sick, or drinking some more and Ahki is watching, crying for the health of her father, and stepping up to take care of her baby brother Tanga. As she grows up she understands more and the older she gets the harder she tries to get her father to stop.
she was 18 when her attempt to get her father to stop turned into a horrible argument. ahki pointed all the things that his horrible addiction has caused this family to go through. and it isn't until ahki brings up how her mother would hate to see him like this does he loose his temper on her and struck her across the face. the air went stiff and ahki fell over. only able to hold her cheek and stare up at her father. ahki decided then that this was no place to call a home anymore and so she gather a bag of her things and told tanga to do the same. together they moved out while her father stayed hidden in the kitchen with his drinks.
now being on her own she has to find a place for them to live. her childhood friend, gabriel (cronin) lets her live in his home since he'll be away at school. from there ahki finds several jobs but is always home to take care of tanga and helps him set up for a better future than she can see for herself.
things were calm. ahki was exhausted but she was content in knowing that her and her brother wouldn't have to cower anymore. it wasn't until their father came to them again, years had passed so he was a very old man now. alcohol took its effect on him and he was forced to move out. ahki still held a pain in her heart for the things she grew up with. she still felt anger and disgust. but she swallowed that down and tooo her father in. adjusting herself so she could balance all her jobs but still be able to come home to take care of her father. they were able to reconnect then, her father apologizing to her for the things he had done before his passing. ahki had forgiven him.
later on they moved out of cronin's place and found a place of their own. ahki got tanga into college and she eventually cut down to one job. ahki never really got to have a partner, a dance, or really accomplish any of her personal dreams. but she isn't upset. she's content with knowing that her brother is okay and is going to be successful. she's content in knowing her parents are reunited. she's content with knowing she did a good deed...
