Maudience, what is your favorite instance of LM Montgomery fleshing out a background character vividly in a sentence or two? I present my own all time fav:

"When she married Fred Proctor I knew how it would turn out. He was one of your wicked, fascinating men. After he got married he left off being fascinating and just kept on being wicked."

Something I like is that even though Anne lost her baby in Anne's House of Dreams, it's not just forgotten after that book. While Anne and Gilbert learn to live with the loss of Joyce and find happiness after such a tragedy, they never stop missing the child they only had for a few hours. She is mentioned at least twice more in the series. This is probably one of the series that handles loss of a child well and I think that choice for Anne and Glibert to lose Joyce was influenced by the tragic loss of LMM's second son.

A Heap of Dreams is a comic script and extremely rough storyboard I started posting a while back for a Sandman / Les Mis crossover! The master post of the pages I’ve done so far is here. I have quite a bit more planned--here’s a bit from later on, with Death:

“You see that girl?” [Eponine has returned to the barricade. She still has the letter.] “Two years ago, she looked into the Seine and realized she didn’t have to jump—that her body would come to the same slab in the morgue no matter what. Ever since then, she’s been able to make people go where she tells them. She remembers the water, and remembers she has nothing to fear.”

“That man there?” [Javert, methodically working on the small barricade, looks over his shoulder] “He broke a geas, nine years ago—took a life that mortal law had no claim on.” [Single panel, Fantine in her deathbed, horror-stricken.] “Until the Ladies come for him, he’s none of my business—and they’re taking their time. Aren’t you?”

[We see Gibelotte, Matelote, and Mme. Houcheloup, in the doorway of the Corinthe, in the silhouette of the Three: “We’re not killers.” “Tear themselves apart, that’s what men do.” “And who cleans up afterward, eh?]
