Day 4: Yosemite Valley Loop Trail Pt 2, Ahwahnee Hotel

Next stop on trail is the historic Ahwahnee Hotel built in 1927, and one of the inspirations for the Overlook Hotel from 'The Shining' (1980). Don't those elevator doors look familiar?

Also note the Royal Arch Cascade in action over the granite above the hotel. Another spot that doesn't often have flowing water this time of year.

The Great Lounge : ep151

Opened in 1927, the Ahwahnee hotel is a 150,000 square foot grand hotel located in Yosemite Valley. Made to feel rustic and match its surroundings, and the Ahwahnee is considered a masterpiece of National Park Service rustic architecture. The interior of the hotel is spectacular, styled in a mixture of art deco, native American, middle eastern, and arts & crafts. The Grand Dining Hall has a 31 foot tall ceiling and floor to ceiling windows to showcase the surrounding park. The Great Lounge is a massive public space featuring two gigantic sandstone fireplaces and at the end of the room, a solarium. Ansel Adams was married there. Steve Jobs was too. Queen Elizabeth II even spent the night here.

When we arrive in the Ferrari, the valet doesn’t even blink an eye. High end automobiles aren’t the exception here, they are the rule. We’re refreshed from the gatorade and the shower, but starving. Dinner service in the Grand Dining Hall is “coat and tie”, so we won’t be doing that. But there is a bar with full meal service and signature drinks.

The bar is cozy, with window seating featuring panoramic views of the park. Cheyenne is really excited about relaxing in the bar and is shocked and displeased when I ask the host for a to-go menu. We order a bunch of appetizers to share, avoiding the charcuterie plate, but choosing some well earned indulgences such as the soft beer pretzel, the artichoke hummus, the Angus beef short ribs, and fresh boysenberry pie.

We both get the Irish Nut, a warm alcoholic drink featuring Bailey's Irish Cream, Frangelico hazelnut liqueur, coffee & whip cream.

The host hands me one of those radio controlled pagers that buzz and flash when your order is ready, and I pass it to Cheyenne and ask her to wait for the order while I run a quick errand. I think she is getting annoyed by my antics, but I’m hoping it will pay off before she boils over. But it’s going to be close!

When I return, I’m carrying a big bag from the hotel gift shop, but I refuse to show her what’s inside. I am on the verge of being murdered when, thankfully, the pager starts buzzing and the host hands Cheyenne the food.

“Come with me my darling.”

The fireplaces in The Great Lounge are huge. The biggest you’ll ever see. 10 feet tall … maybe more. We score a love seat with a coffee table directly in front of the fireplace. If there’s a cozier or more romantic spot on earth, I have yet to find it, and my “master plan” is beginning to make sense to Cheyenne.

She opens the styrofoam take-away boxes, and then neatly “sets the table” with the plastic silverware. But now it’s time for the big reveal.

Cheyenne: Okay you, what’s in the bag?

In a mildly theatrical fashion I pull a gigantic Pendleton Indian blanket out of the bag and wrap her up in it. Cheyenne just melts.

I slip in under the blanket next to her and we kick off our shoes and play footsie as we begin to gobble up our delicious meal. The perfect place. The perfect girl. Delicious food and a warm drink. This is heavenly.

Cheyenne grabs her drink and offers up a toast.

Me: Not too shabby?

She chuckles.

Cheyenne: Baby now “this” is camping!
