I think this is a little more emotional™ then we were both expecting, but it’s still got the softness that I think you were looking for. Just with a bit of added feels. I hope you like it still!!! Thank you for requesting<3
The singing birds woke you up that morning. The sun had barely even risen over the horizon, the sky only just becoming a shade of light blue. You grumbled, upset by the rude awakening, and by the fact that you were that light of a sleeper. It wasn't the worst thing to wake up to, of course. It was a pleasant sound to your ears. You just wished you hadn't woke up so early.
You laid there, a little more alert as you realized that you were laying against something hard. You picked your head up just enough to see that you had ended up on top of Mark some time in the night. Your head and hand rested on his chest, while his arm curled around you to hold you close.
You smiled softly down at your boyfriend, who you thought was asleep. However, as you started to pull away from him to start the day, since it didn't feel like you'd be getting back to sleep, his grip around you became iron and one of his eyes peeked open. He grinned at your surprise before you smiled back at him.
"And where do you think you're going, my love?" Mark asked.
"To make breakfast for me and my handsome boyfriend?"
He chuckled, the sound rumbling deep in his chest.
"Too early," Was all he said and pulled you back down to lie on his chest. You didn't argue. Didn't have the energy, nor the reason.
It was silent for a while, just listening to the birds, and his heartbeat, and the sound of each others breaths. Then Mark spoke up, voice just barely above a whisper.
"Hey," He said, just catching you before you fell back asleep, "Thanks."
"Mmm?" You mumbled against his chest, now fighting off the sleep that tried to take you, "For what?
"For..." he trailed off, as if mulling over whether or not he actually wanted to say this. Then, with a heavy sigh, he said, "For staying here. With me."
"Well yeah, it's no problem. I mean, I'm still kind of tired anyway, so..."
"No, I mean... Thanks for not leaving me. For... for sticking around all this time. I don't know why you do, but..."
Suddenly understanding what he was getting at, you pushed yourself off of his chest again to look at him, but his eyes avoided your gaze as he continued.
"Every time you go, I worry that you won't come back. I worry that you've grown tired of me. I'm thankful for every day that you come back home to me and I can hold you in my arms. So...thank you."
Mark had a long and heartbreaking history, one that he generally refused to talk about. Because of that, you didn't know much about what happened with his ex wife. You didn't even know the woman's name, and you didn't care for it either. It was obvious that what she did hurt him severely. It took you a long time for him to let you in, and even longer to feel comfortable enough to be in a relationship with you. Even now, he always needed reassurance that you would still be around.
It hurt you to know that he's been through that heartbreak. You could only imagine what it was like. Whoever that woman is, you hoped that she was happy with herself, because she damaged a man almost too far to be fixed.
You brought your hand to cup his cheek, and you smiled sadly.
"Mark, I stick around because I love you. And the thought of leaving you and breaking your heart makes my own heart shatter. I could never hurt you like that. You mean everything to me."
Mark looked away from you and you knew he was probably hiding the tears welling in his eyes, embarrassed. But he still smiled, small but noticeable.
"Come on, darling," You said, drawing his attention back to you, "Let's get a few more hours of rest."
You leaned forward, pressing a kiss onto his cheekbone before laying back down against him.
"And don't forget what I said. I meant it."
You snuggled for a while as the sun rose, and eventually you drifted to sleep. But Mark's eyes stayed lazily open, trained on the ceiling above you. For some reason, despite being the one who wanted to stay in bed, he couldn't manage to fall asleep. He was too busy thinking about you.
You were always so sweet, always so attentive. Always so good to him. Even in moments like that, when his anxiety spiked and his insecurities got in the way. You were so soft, and oh so patient with him.
And he didn't forget about what you said. Your words replayed in his mind over, and over, and over again. He held onto them dearly, as if they were his life preserver in the ocean he was drowning in. Perhaps they were.
