They split off in different directions, Charles with Monty, and Edwin with Crystal. Truthfully, he hadn't spent much time alone with the psychic, finding himself either with Charles or Niko a majority of the time. He wouldn't admit it out loud, but Crystal had grown on him and he would be… sad, to see her go. He didn't suppose she would stick around after her memories returned, and if she did, she would die and move on and Edwin would have to say goodbye anyway. It would be an absolute shame when that day came around.
“So,” Crystal started, hands in her pockets. “What's goin’ on with you and Monty? Thought he'd be all over you, not Charles.”
Edwin sighed, studying the ground. “Monty… Well, as I am sure you know, Monty and I went for a walk together last night.” She nodded, so he continued. “He kissed me.”

B - But putting up a brave front means she’s perpetually exhausted.
A - And with that, she exits their office, leaving behind a trail of doubts planted in Edwin’s and Charles’s minds, and what looks like a business card sitting on the chair she has just vacated.
L - “Let me be the judge of that,” Charles mutters.
L - “Let’s get out of here and inform her, shall we?”
O - Our team works like a perfectly oiled clock mechanism.
O - One moment you were in front of your house and the next you ran away through the nearest puddle!
N - “Not in the last few months,” Charles admits.
S - So maybe she should be the one groveling.
C - Crystal isn’t around this time—she’s at school for the time being, making up for lost time.
R - Remember we needed it for the Case of the Lost Candles?
A - As she walks up the street, the whispers of her schoolmates follow her.
P - Panting from the exertion, Crystal bends forward for the second time this evening.
G - “Good to see you agree on something, “ Jenny deadpans.
R - Right now, Charles wouldn’t know where to start.
A - Across the street, wandering in front of some of the most expensive buildings in town, she spies a familiar long coat and knickerbockers, neat high socks and polished shoes, as well as a thoroughly used leather-bound notebook in one slender hand.
S - She forces him to look at her, but he doesn’t dare to.
S - She looks like she’s seen a ghost—which is a lot, Edwin thinks, given that she’s been living among phantoms for a year—wide-eyed and scared and trembling.

I gave a bit of a summary in the other ask about this one, so you get some behind the scenes facts :D
There's a serious injury referenced in the first part of the story which is a tiny bit inspired by a workplace accident that I saw some of the aftermath of in real life (though with specifics heavily changed.) But Edwin's physical response to hearing about it is how I reacted when hearing about a similar injury.
The aftermath of Edwin hurting himself got rewritten 3 times because I couldn't decide which perspective I wanted it in. It ended up in Edwin's POV because it was easier to make Charles say out loud why he was upset than to make Edwin say out loud why he wasn't. (And I was able to get most of the Charles angst that was missed as a result into the next scene so win-win?)
One of the items Charles sticks in his backpack in a later scene is stolen from an unrelated fantasy book series (because it's a cool magic item and seems like something the boys might have), with the invented case that it comes from referencing the main character of said series. It's not an easter egg I really expect anyone to notice (because the series in question is pretty niche) but I at least am amused by it :D
