30 years ago. Boston. Mass General Hospital. AP was Aerosolized Pentamadine which was effective in treating PWA's with Pneumonia. Act Up Boston focused on the Boston hospitals which were researching the drug to make the studies more open. A few months later we targeted John Hancock to have insurance companies pay for the drug. Both actions were successful. I helped make the signage and am here with my Act Up buds....

Manhattan, 1991: ACT UP demonstrators scale Grand Central Station's train timetable during their "Day of Desperation." ACT UP staged actions throughout the five boroughs of New York City in protest President George H.W. Bush's spending billions of dollars on the Gulf War while claiming there was no money for much-needed increases in AIDS programs.
The acronym ACT UP stands for AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power.

On November 2, 1992, members of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) carried a dead body through the streets of Manhattan. The deceased was Mark Fisher, a gay man and AIDS activist who had died from complications of the disease he spent his last years fighting. His was the first political funeral staged by ACT UP. It would not be the last.

@PeterStaley: We do a lot in New York with Medicaid dollars. You mentioned medicaid expansion. Do you have ideas on how to convince the states?
Pete Buttigieg: It’s politics right? The states don’t want to do the right thing. This is why I mentioned if you could just take it out of the hands of the states. You just establish universal healthcare. In Indiana they found some face-saving way to do it without admitting they were working with the Obama administration.
The needle exchange in Scott County basically amounts to the primary Medicaid intake center for that rural community. Honestly, I can call for, and I do call for Medicaid expansion. Unfortunately as long as that is an option the states can have, you’re not going to see services expanding the way they need to be to get ahead of HIV.
