Ibones

All along the beautiful ups and downs of the Pyrenees, there are ibones: Pools of refreshing fresh water trapped by the rocks.

Not only do they offer a much-needed refueling station for drinking water, but they also make for great pictures, mirroring the mountains and clouds beyond.

But most importanly given the trail's heat, exhaustion and sweat, they constitute paradisical oases to refresh for a quick dip. Sí, son un poco frescos.

Without shame I will frequent a quick strip and jump in. Water temperatures vary strongly from refreshing to blizzard. The best strategy is to jump in and instantly swim forward. This way I enjoy about 20 seconds of pure joy before noticing that I need to return to shore instantly to avoid clinical death. In some ibones I do proudly endure a few minutes.

Hoy les dejo un amanecer a mitad del GR11, en Aigüestortes, sobre un montón de nubes que se acurrucaron para dormir cerca de la tierra. Recuerdo que desperté por la noche, a las tres de la mañana. Recuerdo que salí fuera a irrigar el campo como hacía durante los primeros años de la vida en la furgo. En la oscuridad agradecí el vino patero de la cena, ya que al respirar el aire frío de la noche…
