Iris and the Anemoi
"They in the house of fierce-blowing Zephyros were feasting all together at the banquet and Iris halted from her running on the threshold of stone. Soon as their eyes beheld her, they all sprang up and called her each one to himself." -Homer, Iliad 23.200
"Here Eustathius is perhaps uncharacteristically brief: ‘Each of the winds calls Iris [to himself] as they are in love with her (ἐρῶντας)’ (in Il. 1296.17‒18). Eustathius knew, as did the scholiasts, that poets after Homer had created a romantic relationship between Iris and Zephyros (in Alcaeus fr. 327 V they were the parents of Eros)." -Richard Hunter, Eustathian Moments pg 40 (quoting Eustathius of Thessalonica)
Thaumantias, the cousin of Aiolos Hippotades [god of the winds]." -Stesichorus, Fragment 222b
"Zeus... charioted upon the Anemoi (winds), Euros, Boreas, Zephyros, and Notos [in the forms of horses] : for Iris rainbow-plumed led 'neath the yoke of his eternal ear that stormy team." -Quintus Syrmnaeus, Fall of Troy 12.189
[Athena sends Iris to Aiolos (Aeolus) to summon a storm to wreck the Greek fleet]: Iris sped unto Aiolos, from heaven far-flying over misty seas, to bid him send forth all his buffetting Anemoi (Winds) o'er iron-bound Kaphereus' cliffs to sweep ceaselessly, and with ruin of madding blasts to upheave the sea. And Iris heard, and swift she darted, through cloud-billows plunging down... And to Aiolia came she... whereby the mansion stands of Aiolos Hippotas' son. Him found she therewithin with wife and twelve sons; and she told to him Athena's purpose toward the homeward-bound Akhaians. He denied her not [and released his storm winds]." -Quintus Syrmnaeus, Fall of Troy 14.467
"Iris, golden wing bride of plant nourishing Zephyros, happy mother of Love [Pothos]" -Nonnus, Dionysiaca 31.103
"Tell Iris the bride of Zephyros and mother of Desire..." -Nonnus, Dionysiaca 47.331
"There is one thing which they say very oddly concerning the birth and generation of this God [Pothos]: Young Zephyr, doting on his golden hair, At last the silver-slippered Iris won; And thus embraced, at length she bore a son, Of all the Gods the shrewdest and most fair." -Alcaeus, Fragment 327 (from Plutarch, Dialogue on Love)
decided to compile every mention of iris and zephyros, which then became the mentions of iris in relation to the anemoi in general
Saintober Day 8 - Animal AU
Just a silly trio hanging out on a sunny day. Also, may I present the debut of bushes in my drawings. n.n" It is my first time drawing those digitally, and well... need a bit of work. I tried a few things, but this is the best I managed. Will continue to look for better ways to draw them. At least I am happy with how I managed the animals - well, Aiolia is a clue as to on which style I leaned on, not just for him, but all three.
Galaxy Version Sagittarius Aiolos
- from Saint Seiya
- by Blokees
What an incredible little figure - especially for the price. I was late to the game with Blokees, but I've been especially impressed by this line in particular. A beautifully designed building figure for a lower budget collector. Highly recommended line.
