Seriously though, is it weird that I feel sorry for the ape?

Because all the other characters in the movie range from unlikeable to downright insufferable. I didn’t expect a movie like this, where you’re supposed to engage with the characters we are first introduced, makes them so obnoxious. I’m supposed to care for them, not wish they’d get stomped by a dinosaur!

King Kong is an odd movie were the empathy lies in its timeless special effects and its monster. Anything else is nothing but background noise.

And now, if you excuse me, we need to get Spike away from town hall. For some reason he’s taken a liking to doing this every Nightmare Night.

Get it!? Because snakes...on a plane...pony! Haha! I’ll see myself out.

Seriously though, this movie is pretty stupid and not very good, but it’s also quite a lot of fun.

Most of the enjoyment comes from the madness of the premise (a plane full of snakes to kill the witness of a murder? What?), and the work of all the actors who are capable of making such mindless dialogue so believable. Samuel L. Jackson is just perfect. He looks like he’s having so much fun.

These aspects make up for every other shortcoming the movie has, like its rhythm issues, the bland two-dimensional characters, the rubbery and cartoony special effects (though I fear this was intentional), and some of the forced gross-out humor.

So this movie is not perfect, it’s as far away from that remark as possible, but it has a few things going for it that make it worth it, so I could give it a passing recommendation.

And now, if you excuse me, I have to get rid of these snakes around AirPon. I have the feeling she’s not enjoying it.
