Ironic that Lapis sings that she’s “tired of the blame” when literally no one she knows blames her or holds her accountable for anything (the only person I remember trying, Connie, got brushed off and never tried again), and by ironic I mean “this initially mysterious and interesting character has turned out to be so badly written and disappointing because the writers seem to want credit for her growth without ever actually showing her learning anything, just having her make decisions offscreen and claim she’s learned.”  

That “cycle of horrible torture” was something you did to someone else because you wanted to and you have never apologised or expressed any concern for how it affected her, you hellbeast.  Nor have you ever apologised for the way you treated Peridot (taking away her home and everything she owned and had built with you because she didn’t agree with you, and accusing her of lying because she was afraid to upset you), and the show just treats it like everything you’ve ever done was fine and you are a poor little thing who only needs to be happy.  By this stage I can’t imagine they’re ever going to address this, because they simply don’t see it as a problem, and it’s a huge letdown.

Lars: is a rude, whiny, selfish jerk who gets Sadie to do his work for him and is never given any motivation for being such a jackass except apparently a fear that people will make fun of him if he doesn’t appear perfect, when his parents are supportive and he lives in Beach City, a town so nice that the one person recognisable as some kind of bully, Kevin, respects non-binary people’s preferred pronouns for heck’s sake.

Steven: begins to act mildly grumpy and irritable sometimes when he is taking all the responsibility and work for Little Homeschool on himself and consumed by both guilt over the damage his war criminal mother caused to countless lives and resentment that dealing with that damage seems likely to occupy his whole life, and sometimes people like Spinel show up to try to destroy the world for heck’s sake.

My response to the new Steven Universe episodes: it was a relief not to be disappointed!  I realise how ungracious that sounds but that’s where I am at the moment (and a pleasant change from my recent feelings about the show).

Also re: the revelation in the fourth episode: I fucking KNEW it.  How satisfying.

one time i baked some bread from a mix but i didn't have any eggs and read that carbonated water was an ok substitute so i used my soda stream to make that happen and it worked out. that's the most i used of the thing in year tbh

I would not have thought that’d work!  I know you can use carbonated water or fizzy lemonade/lemon lime soda to make light muffins or sweet scones, but the world of bread is an intimidating mystery to me.

(I was thinking about the himbo concept, and how it’s been pointed out that although the word is based on “bimbo,” a himbo is not in fact the male equivalent of bimbo because it’s implicit that a bimbo is vapid and annoying, whereas a himbo is a likeable big galoot.

While personal beauty or sex appeal is a key part of both, because of the ways that beauty standards for men and women conventionally differ, being big and strong is a key characteristic of himbos while bimbos are expected to be slim (but busty).

I would identify the key himbo characteristics as:

big and strong

handsome in a wholesome or clean-cut way

thoroughly nice

not clever in the least

The first three points are pretty uniform across himbodom but there’s some variation in the fourth.  Himbos are never clever but they’re not necessarily all stupid.  Other himbo intellect types include:

honest and sincere to a fault and therefore unable to be subtle or deceptive; easily fooled

good at certain specific skills which clearly require intelligence but entirely lacking in common sense (e.g. Kronk from The Emperor’s New Groove is a good cook and speaks fluent squirrel but is otherwise a nitwit)

sheltered, unworldly and trusting

so used to coasting on his strength and looks that he has never really developed his mind (Steve Harrington from Stranger Things, who lacks the true himbo bulk but is at least athletic) 

operating on his own highly idiosyncratic system of logic which seldom coincides with that of the rest of the world (arguably Kevin from Ghostbusters: Answer the Call)  

I consider all of these valid himbos.

Thus the female equivalent of a himbo is not a bimbo, but a woman who is likewise big and strong, good-looking within that type of physique (so not conventionally), and equipped with a heart of gold and a head of air.  The character type is relatively rare in my experience but I would nominate Scorpia from She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and Sailor Jupiter from Sailor Moon (who specifically belongs to the “honest and sincere to a fault” type).

What should we call them?

oh no I’ve hit the grumpy portion of tiredness on Sunday evening (I got very little sleep last night due to my parents being away for the night and needing to be on deck with my sister and her children, the smaller of whom cried for HOURS about being cruelly expected to sleep).

And then they go off on this bit that makes no sense in the context of the dub other than “Jessie is boasting about the many roles she’s played,” because in Japan Jessie/Musashi’s voice actor is Megumi Hayashibara and I don’t know if she’s the legend today that she was in the 90s because I’m a pop-cultural hermit but in the 90s Megumi Hayashibara was the biggest star in Japanese voice acting and here we go with a hit parade of her most famous roles.  I recognise All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (yes that was her whole name), Ranma-chan, Rei Ayanami, the fact that she also did the voices for Nyase (Meowth) and Ekans/Arbok in Japan, Faye Valentine and Lina Inverse (I’m guessing Lina is the director of this episode’s big favourite).  Oh, and the woman from Paprika, whose name I forget but I recognised her in this lineup entirely because I was like “That’s Satoshi Kon hair if ever I saw it.”
