Hey Hamlet, do you think the redemption theme in Hazbin Hotel is well done or not? You know, I've read and heard a lot that Show handles it very poorly or superficially/basically, unlike other works like RDR 2 or the God of War saga.
Hi,
did you mean to send this ask to @hamliet? Maybe you did, but got the wrong blog since she told me she has received no ask like this.
Anyway, if you have browsed either hamliet's blog or mine, you would know we both love the series very much and one of the main themes of Habzin Hotel is notoriously redemption. So, why are you asking two people who have made no secret of loving a show and have both said we especially like how the themes are done if we think one of its main themes is badly handled?
Sorry, but the answer is obviously going to be "no, we think the theme of redemption is great" :''')
You can find some examples of me discussing the theme here and here. There are also some great posts made by other people. Probably there is even more if you search my blog.
Now, going a little deeper into your ask. I know the two series you mention by name, but I don't know their stories very well. I have heard they are both great and probably I would like them too, if I were to watch the play-throughts. That said, they are a) both videogames and b) they have a very different tone and are a different genre compared to Hazbin. So, of course Hazbin is not going to do things the same way. Or are people seriously expecting a fairy tale comedy musical with a huge ensemble cast and only two seasons out of 8 episodes each to do the same thing of long-ass videogames sagas with a much more realistic and harsher tone? Do people also expect that Cinderella's pumpkin makes sense from a physical point of view? Or that Little Red Riding Hood stays eaten by the wolf 'cause you know... usually when people die they stay dead?
I am sorry if I am cranky, I have nothing against you or people liking one thing and disliking the other. However, your ask happened to hit a nerve, which is why I am taking a tangent. Sorry if this has nothing to do with what you intended :P
I am getting more and more annoyed by people thinking the only "good" and "intelligent" and "deep" stories are the ones that are somehow cynical and somber. They are not. Being cynical does not make a person better or more intelligent. Cynicism and optimism are both two extreme forms of idealism, after all. None of them is a perfect mirror of reality. They just happen to be two different ways to look at the world. And yes, optimism can be naive, but excessive cynicism is idiotic. I mean, we are in an extremely cynical society and the world is kinda spiraling, in case anybody has failed to notice.
Hazbin Hotel is not a cynical story, but an optimistic one. It is at its core a feel good show. People apparently can't stand feel good shows :P Or at least they can't stand feel good shows that dare to say the world maybe isn't completely doomed 'cause even the worst people can do something good once in a while.
So, yes, Hazbin Hotel deals with redemption very well, but not in the way people expect hence they are offended by it. Things people can't stand about the way Hazbin deals with redemption:
-It says anyone can be redeemed. Yes, even murderers, yes, even people who commit genocides. Yes, even rapists. Does it mean everyone will be redeemed? No, but it says everyone has the capacity to do it. This offends people.
-It says redemption has actually nothing to do with the victims, but with the perpetrator changing. So, no, there is no focus on the people Sir Pentious's passivity got killed. The focus is on him gaining new friends and overcoming cowardice for them. And no, we don't see Sera going through an arc where she begs the Sinners for forgiveness and cries and is tortured for her past actions. We focus on her realizing she has to do better and stopping a war from happening. This is definitely more useful than being tortured, but who cares? The pain ain't enough, so people are offended.
-It says redemption is internal, unique to everyone and it is really not that much different than just change or growth. This annoys people because to think that a "bad" person changes exactly like a "good" person grows is unacceptable. Redemption must be rooted into some different quality of change, right? Possibly one with a ton of pain, rather than with a ton of love.
-Finally it tells very "smart" and "informed" people that the majority of the time they have no fucking idea of what redemption even is. That is because redemption is rooted into our ideas of good and evil that may differ from person to person. So, rather than discussing about redemption, people should discuss about "good" and "evil" first. Obviously, people are offended 'cause they don't like to be told we are all ignorant.
In conclusion, Hazbin Hotel won't deal with redemption like other series do. For example, I doubt we will have incredibly long redemption arcs like the one of Spike in BTVS (the format won't permit it). We will just get normal positive character arcs (shocking, I know). This doesn't mean the story won't have anything to say about redemption. Different stories can deal with the same theme in different ways, according to media, format, genre and tone. That is great since it leads to diversity in story-telling, which makes for a richer exploration of the world. Something that doesn't resonate with you personally can resonate deeply with another person. It is literally why many different stories are being written. If we could all be satisfied with one perfect story we would not need creativity.
